Which secure chat?

Does anyone know of a good secure group chat app?

It would be good to create a persistent Concen members chat that can live for a while.

Maybe ConCen could get one of

Maybe ConCen could get one of those embedded chat rooms built in to the site itself, like MyAnonomouse has. If there were more active users, using comments and private messages is another way to connect, but I am not sure the site has a strong enough user base to warrant a chatroom. I know other trackers still use IRC a lot as well.

SECURE CHAT

I know of one which will be coming on line called privateline.io. When you sign up, there is no request for email, phone number etc. Guaranteed to be completely private. I understand websites can also use this. I think it'll cost around $15 per month. I understand Chris Kitze is behind it - https://uspto.report/TM/98112624. Sorry for being so vague, I don't have much info on it as yet. Dave Hodges and Kitze make mention of it see - https://mediaarchives.gsradio.net/commonsenseshow/hr1011725.mp3 - mainly towards the end.

Threema

Just seen Threema recommended in an ITV documentary.

It's £5.99 for the mobile app, which you need to make the desktop/web app work.

Tox.

If you'd like to try tox, add me using this:

Aren't people still using

Aren't people still using Telegram for sharing multimedia etc? I never really joined that bandwagon, so I guess I missed out. Didn't know it was now becoming passe...

zoopenhoff
nah

needs mobile number to verify.
centralised.
probably monitored now.

TheCorsair00
I noticed that, because I set

I noticed that, because I set it up a couple months ago and it said I needed to install it to my phone and, from what I recall, the username or log in itself was my private phone number, which I thought was weird for something touted to be super private and all.

The problem.

The problem is actually that iOS, Android, MacOS and Windows have all been compromised by governments.

We're constantly monitored - just installing an app like Threema gets you on a list.

Then they can activate more thorough surveillance at will.

I suspect the only solution is Linux, and even then, maybe it's compromised.

Telegram gave more user data to French authorities after founder's arrest
Pavel Durov, the founder and chief executive officer of the messaging app, was arrested in Paris last August over criminal content posted by users on his platform.

Messaging service Telegram passed vastly more data on its users to French authorities in the second half of 2024 following founder Pavel Durov's arrest in Paris, figures published by the platform showed.

The company said it handed over IP addresses or telephone numbers that Paris asked for in 210 cases in July-September and 673 in October-December. That was up from just four in the first quarter and six in the second.

Some 2,072 users were affected by French requests for user data – again massively weighted towards the second half of 2024, with more than half in the fourth quarter alone.

Pavel Durov was arrested in Paris in August, where he was held for four days before being charged with various crimes, mostly linked to control of criminal content on Telegram.

He and his supporters have claimed that most French and European authorities' requests for user data were simply not being sent to the right department at the company and therefore received no response.

Let me list all possible

Let me list all possible options for instant message protocols and find out the pros and cons of each. I will turn on my tinfoil hat. :)

>> IRC:
Pros: Reliable. Decentralized. Just works.
Cons: Lacks basic features. Lacks encryption.

>> Matrix:
Pros:Lots of features. Apparently also encrypted.
Cons: Semi-centralized. Bloated clients on both the user and the server side. French government agencies was involved in developing it.

>> Signal:
Pros: Military grade encryption. Just works. Fast.
Cons: Centralized. Requires a phone number. Sketchy company behind it. Lacks a decent client on PC. Possible honeypot.

>> Telegram:
Pros: Comfy af. Fast.
Cons: Centralized. Requires phone number. No encryption available. Sketchy company behind it.

>> XMPP:
Pros: Fast. Just works. Can be encrypted. Covers basic features. Lots of clients to suit every taste.
Cons: Encryption doesn't work on groupchats, only on 1on1 convos,

>> Threema
Pros: Just works. Has basic features and good encryption.
Cons: Not open source. Swiss army uses this, thus is involved with Swiss government. Buggy client.

>> Sesssion
Pros: Encrypted. Has basic features.
Cons: Semi-decentralized. Sketchy company behind it.

>> Delta Chat
You tell me, but seems like a based choice

>> SimpleX
Very promising project. I am yet to check it out.

Of all those choices, I use XMPP on a daily basis. I can share some links with more info on it you guys ever want to move to XMPP << I do recommend it though.

Maybe yeti should create a

Maybe yeti should create a discord and we can all catch up with old friends on there. the forum has been dead for like 10-15 years. Oh boy did we miss a lot haha

I know discord is not secure but it is convenient as most people already on it.

zoopenhoff
miserable buggers

no-one actually wants a chat.

TheCorsair00
I think a lot of people

I think a lot of people prefer lurking in the shadows! I still think the best way to interact on ConCen is on the site itself - the torrent comments, maybe even the forum and private messages. I know there are people here, but there are only a handful of regular posters. I think most people are finding other ways of interacting online, like Reddit or X or something. Torrents are still being downloaded and uploaded by a reasonable amount of people worldwide - I check! But other than that it's crickets! LOL

Any conclusions yet?

Hi,
Did we settle for anything yet?
Doesn't seem like anything is coming out of this convo

ConCen
Looks like chat is something

Looks like chat is something a few of you ConCenners In Good Standing© (CIGS) would like. Therefore I will dismiss your request with a flick of the wrist and an audible Pffffft!

ConCen Chat in the past has been a magnet for disturbed people and agents bent on poisoning the site.

If a few volunteer moderators would step into the breech then I'll reconsider the idea. A chat could be fun.
