The Spies who Fooled Hitler: MI5 at War (1999)

Following the occupation of Norway, Denmark, Holland, Belgium and France, the Germans were plotting an invasion of the United Kingdom in 1940 – codenamed Operation Sea Lion – and sent spies to gather intelligence across the English Channel. Operation Lena, part of Hitler's invasion plan, was the infiltration of German-trained secret agents into Britain on sabotage and espionage missions.

The Abwehr, Germany's military intelligence, selected and trained English-speaking Germans, Norwegians, Danes, Dutch, Belgian, French, Cuban, Irish and British men, and a few women. They were either parachuted into remote areas of Ireland or central and southern England, or brought by submarine close to the coast. From there they paddled a dinghy onto an isolated beach in South Wales, Dungeness, East Anglia or Northeast Scotland.

Landing on British shores, these members of the Abwehr intelligence service were instructed to sabotage military operations and relay military intel back to Germany. However, most were caught almost immediately, and many others handed themselves in to the police when they arrived in Britain in order to serve as double agents for the British intelligence agency MI5. Spies caught on British soil were interrogated at specially-designed detention centre, the Latchmere House in Ham, Middlesex - otherwise known as Camp 020.

This is the story of the captured German spies who were then turned into double agents and used by MI5 to deceive Hitler during the Second World War. Newly released MI5 documents and interviews with former members of MI5 and its top-secret interrogation centre, Camp 020, tell how the double agents played a crucial role in the Normandy landings.
