If civilian experts are pondering this question and saying this might be possible (Artificial Immortality), then I suspect that covert military ops are already doing it. You have to remember that "they" are usually 50-100 years ahead of us, plus technology is increasing exponentially for everyone, so I always have to wonder about what the classified technologies are doing (and what their ultimate agenda is etc).
