In this episode of Vice News, Milene Larsson wanders into Istanbul, to learn more about the protest movement which has erupted in opposition to Erdogan, the Muslim Brotherhood leaning leader of Turkey. Through interviews with protesters, she learns that- originally- the protest occupied Gezi Park...one of the last remaining green spaces in Turkey's capital city. Erdogan had slated the park for destruction and development, which instigated an angry reaction from the local populace. This anger quickly exacerbated into something much larger when police clad in riot gear moved in to try and disperse the protesters with force...using massive amounts of tear gas, rubber bullets, water-cannons and straight violence, in the process. Now, saving Gezi has become secondary to a much broader anti-authoritarian movement that seeks to oust the President and leading party (whom they perceive to be violators of human rights- particularly in relation to the Kurds). This program gets to the heart of "why" the occupy movement is alive in Turkey; "what" they are fighting for; and includes lots of crazy protest footage. An interesting watch.
