The Vatican wanted a pope with silver-haired good looks, and the charisma necessary to bring people back to the church. The underworld wanted a pope with allegiance to the mob, and the larceny necessary to bring the church's abundant riches under their control. No one wanted the Pope to be an overweight, bumbling nobody like Father Albinizi...but due to a clerical error, Albinizi gets the job!
Now the church is embarrassed...the mob is furious, and Albinizi is confused. He spends his days waving at crowds and dodging bullets...until he becomes a man with a mission. He's going to clean up the church if it kills him!

After much outcry from Roman Catholics after the first release of this film in the USA, it's US title was changed by the addition of a single letter. The second release title is "The Pope Must Diet". The UK title is still "The Pope Must Die".
