Nemesis is a science fiction novel by Isaac Asimov. One of his later science fiction novels, it was published in 1989, only three years before his death. The novel is loosely related to the future history into which he attempted to integrate his science fiction output, connecting several ideas from earlier and later novels, including non-human intelligence, sentient planets (Erythro), and rotor engines (Fantastic Voyage II: Destination Brain). In the context of Asimov's Foundation Universe, it is told of thousands of years later as a "legend". This was one of the books that gave the inspiration to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

Plot summary:
The demands of the plot required Asimov to hypothesize a planetary system about a star named Nemesis. At the time of the writing, the name Nemesis was given to a theoretical companion to Earth's sun which could provide a mechanism for periodic disturbances of comets in the Oort cloud, which would then fall inwards causing mass extinctions. The red dwarf star in the book turns out not to be this companion; it is simply passing through the solar system.
The novel is set in an era in which interstellar travel is in the process of being discovered and perfected. Before the novel's opening, "hyper-assistance", a technology allowing travel at exactly light speed, is used to move a reclusive asteroid colony from the vicinity of Earth to the newly discovered red dwarf, Nemesis. There, it takes up orbit around the semi-habitable moon Erythro, named for the red light that falls on it. While the colonists argue over the direction of future colonization -- down to Erythro, or up to the asteroid belts of Nemesis system -- events catch up to them. Back on Earth superluminal flight is perfected, ending the Erythro colony's isolation and opening the galaxy to human exploration. The story also relates the breakup and reunion of a family (the mother, the discoverer of Nemesis, and the daughter were separated from the Earthbound father when the colony departed; the father becomes part of the hyperjump research project as a result); the startling discovery that the bacterial inhabitants of Erythro, collectively, constitute a sentient and telepathic organism; and the discovery and resolution of a massive crisis: Nemesis' trajectory threatens to gravitationally destabilize the solar system.
Interestingly, the planetary system in the book included a Jovian planet named Megas in a very short-period orbit about its primary star. (Erythro is a moon of Megas.) This was a radical idea in 1989, but was vindicated with the discovery of the first extrasolar planet orbiting a sun-like star (51 Pegasi) in 1995, dubbed "Bellerophon".

The 'Dark Star' Theory
Researcher Andy Lloyd discussed his 'Dark Star Theory,' the Anunnaki & Nibiru, and Planet X, as well as his recent novel Ezekiel One. In February, he spoke at the Return of Planet X Conference held in Rome, and found that many of the Italian attendees were terrified about the possibility of a rogue planet heading our way in 2012, and suspicious that governments were covering up information about Planet X.

Lloyd's dark star theory proposes that a sub brown dwarf is a kind of companion star to our sun and exists in the far reaches of the solar system between the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud. He estimated that it's some 500 to 1,000 astronomical units away (our sun is 1 astronomical unit away from Earth). The dark star could have vast magnetic and gravitational fields that interact with the sun, and recent anomalies detected in the outer solar system, could be evidence of its presence.

Further, the brown dwarf may be orbited by its own moons, some of which might contain life. One of these moons could be the planet referred to by Zecharia Sitchin as Niburi, the home world of the Annunaki. Lloyd incorporated the Annunaki as characters in his book Ezekiel One, exploring the idea that aliens are living among us. His novel, a conspiracy thriller, is set in the last months of 2012, and deals with government secrecy and Planet X.

The Heritage Universe is a sequence of five novels written by scientist and science fiction author Charles Sheffield. Summertide (1990), Divergence (1991), Transcendence (1992), Convergence (1997), and Resurgence (2002) depict a human future many thousands of years from today.

Mankind has colonized most of the local spiral arm of the galaxy, and along the way has encountered thousands of gigantic artifacts left behind by an ancient race referred to as the Builders. The purpose behind these artifacts remains a mystery, as no Builder, living or dead, has ever been found. Some artifacts include whole engineered worlds, bent regions of spacetime, and other completely mysterious technologies.

Each book centers on the adventures of a group of humans and aliens who meet due to common interest in the Builders in Summertide, and conclude their first adventure in Convergence. Resurgence was to be the first book in the series that continued the adventures of the same group, but the author passed away shortly after it was published.
