The first of a three-book series on Dick based on a series of interviews with Dick in 1981 by Rickman. Very rare!

Dick discusses his writing techniques, his books, Bladerunner, and the work of other writers. Appendices include a checklist of books by and about Dick and the texts of two Dick letters.

From Rickman:
"This book is the first of three projected volumes of Philip K. Dick speaking in his own words. This volume is Phil speaking on his career as a science fiction writer, on each of his books and also, Inescapably, on the biographical and philosophical elements lying behind each novel.

Volume Two, Philip K. Dick: The Last Testament will incorporate Phil's last tape, made the day in February 1982 before he had his stroke, and will cover all of his extraordinary visions and his many statements and thoughts on religion and philosophy -- the things that mattered most to him in life, which his novels merely animated. The two books are closely interwoven but have their distinct and separate uses. Both may be read by the general reader, for I have taken pains to explain each reference. The day may come when Phil's reputation as a philosopher exceeds his [large and growing) reputation as a science fiction writer. He would be amused.

Volume Three, projected for publication at some point in 1988 (probably the summer], will attempt to untangle the threads of Phil's extraordinary life. It will include, in addition to Phil's memoirs of his life as told to me, the interviews I have made with various of Phil's relatives and friends and further interviews I hope to make with more who knew him."
