BILOXI, MISS - A two-day drama near the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in southern Mississippi was resolved Wednesday afternoon, with authorities determining that what soldiers reported as gunshots had really been the result of a 61-year-old man backfiring his truck.
FBI agents and law enforcement officials from state and local agencies had been combing through the woods of Perry County in search for a gunman after soldiers reported the shots, first on Tuesday and then later on Wednesday, and the Pentagon announced that the camp had been placed on a heightened state of alert.
But after questioning a man who was detained by police, officials announced that they did not believe shots had been fired. Still, the man faces both misdemeanor and felony charges.
