I highly recommend these 3 series, simply from the perspective of how much I was able to learn about myself and others while watching, and trying to think what I'd be like in such situations, especially those that would challenge me the most.
It is often the most challenging situations we face in life that teach us the most about who we are as individuals and how we tick. ~ Dunamis]
About the Show
Remember Morgan Spurlock, of Super Size Me fame? He's back, and the star of wildly popular television series that TV Guide has called "equal parts funny and sobering and a million times smarter than most other shows on TV." He and his fiancée Alex leave their fabulous New York lifestyles behind for the heart of the Midwest: Columbus, Ohio. They work at multiple minimum wage jobs for 30 days earning $5.15 an hour. They get to experience first-hand the struggles that families earning minimum wage face as Morgan's niece and nephew come to live with them.
From experiencing the life of a former star athlete to living off the grid to dealing with alcoholism, 30 Days demonstrates all the ups and downs that people of different lifestyles face across the country.
Episode 1: Immigration
Illegal immigration is the topic as a Minuteman spends a month with an East Los Angeles family of seven in their one-bedroom apartment. The irony -not lost on his hosts - is that illegal-immigration foe Frank George is an immigrant himself, from Cuba. "If I could deport the [family] tomorrow I would have to," he says. Then he gets to know them.
Episode 2: Outsourcing
Outsourcing is explored as a New York computer programmer follows his former job to Bangalore, "the Silicon Valley of India." Chris Jobin, 37, finds he can't get it back (he'd need "Indian experience," he's told), but he easily finds work - prestigious work - at a call center. But first Chris must take "American training." It's "raining jobs," Chris marvels, but the training is part of the price India must pay. "This culture," he says, "is bending and reshaping itself to match ours."
Episode 3: Atheist/Christian
A freethinking mother of four finds religion (for a month, at least) in the home of an evangelical Christian family. "It's not like you have an 'unborn-again' experience," says Brenda as she tells her host family, the Shores, how she became a nonbeliever. During their month together, Brenda attends their Frisco, Texas, nondenominational mega-church as well as Bible-study sessions.
Episode 4: New Age
A skeptical 37-year-old New Jersey salesman embarks on a regimen of New Age therapies to relieve stresses in his life that he fears are threatening his relationships with his daughter and girlfriend. He learns yoga, receives acupuncture and Reiki therapy, and attends a tribal-dancing class, a spring-equinox ritual and a Tantric-intimacy workshop. Later, he contemplates walking over a bed of hot coals.
Episode 5: Pro Choice/Pro Life
An Atlanta abortion-clinic employee spends 30 days at a Long Beach maternity home operated by a pro-life minister. Jennifer, 29, must attend anti abortion demonstrations that the home, His Nesting Place, takes part in, but she's far happier spending time with the pregnant women and new moms who live there. Jennifer's visit "has challenged us," says Pastor Al Howard, the director of His Nesting Place.
Episode 6: Jail
Morgan Spurlock does a stretch in the Henrico County, Virginia, living with actual inmates. Spurlock is immediately overwhelmed by his lack of freedom and privacy. Then he gets more privacy than he wants when he's put in a 7x10 solitary-confinment cell for 72 hours and isn't even allowed books.
