Kings (The Physical Destruction of Iceland)

Ten years before the economic collapse in Iceland the country's main focus of attention was the question whether more foreign owned aluminum smelters should be built. Not only was the amount of pollution a major concern, but also the amount of dams and hydro electric power plants that would have to be built and their irreversible impact on the landscape, nature and wildlife. The opposition believed that tourism would be a much better investment for Iceland than smelters which the foreign owners might not need for more than a few years.
