25 June 2013: We have been inundated with e-mails asking us to read the very moving article published here, at Gawker.com, titled I’m sorry that it has come to this: A soldier’s last words. The article, as people say, has gone “vial” over the internet – as well it should. If you have not read it yet, please do so now, then return back here. I’ll wait…

If that was your first exposure to this man’s final thoughts and last words, how do you feel right now? Sad? Obviously. Angry? At who? Are you angry at the soldier who believed his only freedom from pain and anguish was to take his own life, for the anguish that his final earthly action might have caused his loved ones? Or are you angry at the system that seems to have failed him? Neither? Both?

Regardless of your thoughts about suicide, think about some of his final words. Think hard and long. Every single day, we lose the same number of soldiers who have returned home from combat to suicide as the number of children who were killed in the Sandy Hook shooting. Something is terribly wrong – systemically, not just on the surface. Political ideology will not save us from the spiritual bankruptcy we have chosen to embrace or tolerate. May God help us all.
