Company Confessions - Secrets, Memoirs and the CIA - 2016

Spies are supposed to keep quiet, never betraying their agents or discussing their operations. Somehow, this doesn t apply to the CIA, whose former officers have written memoirs commanding huge advances and attracting enormous publicity. As an intelligence service dependent on its ability to protect sensitive information, however, it s no surprise that the CIA has fought back.

In Company Confessions, award-winning author Christopher Moran digs deep into this tumultuous relationship between the CIA and former agents who try to go public about their careers. He delves into the motivations of spies like CIA officer Valerie Plame, whose identity was leaked by the Bush White House and who reportedly received $2.5 million for her book Fair Game, and exposes the politics and practices of the CIA and its Publications Review Board, including breaking into publishing houses and secretly authorizing pro-agency memoirs.

Drawing on interviews; the private correspondence of such legendary spies as Allen Dulles, William Colby, and Richard Helms; and declassified CIA files, Company Confessions examines why America s spies are so willing to share their stories, the damage inflicted when they leak the nation s secrets, and the fine line between censorship on the grounds of security and censorship for the sake of reputation.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life - Mark Manson - 2016

There are a dozen of topics Mark goes through in this book. Some of the main themes are these:

(1) Choosing what to care about; focusing on the things/problems that are actually meaningful/important (= "giving a f*** about the right things")
(2) Learning to be fine with some negative things; always aiming for positivity isn't practical, and is stressful in itself
(3) Taking responsibility of your own life; it's good for your self-esteem not to keep blaming the circumstances for your problems
(4) Understanding the importance of honesty and boundaries, especially in relationships
(5) Identity; it might a good idea not to commit strongly to any special identity such as "an undiscovered genius", because then any challenges will make you fear the potential loss of that identity you've clinged to
(6) Motivation; how to improve it by accepting failure and taking action
(7) Death; how learning to be more comfortable with one's own mortality can make it easier to live

The first 20% of this book were a little bit boring to read, but after that, the experience was very absorbing. Just like Manson's previous book (Models), I will give this one five stars.

(BTW this book wasn't as humorous as I expected. It was much more a serious than a funny book to read. The final chapters, discussing the acceptance of death, made me actually a little bit tense and distressed.)

Pablo Escobar: Beyond Narcos (War on Drugs)- Shaun Attwood 2016

The book tells Pablo's story in such an exciting way, while completely demolishing any justification of the war on drugs.
While previous books about Pablo use a good (authorities) against evil (Pablo) narrative, this book shows that the authorities were not hunting Pablo down to stop his cocaine business. They were taking over it. Pablo became so wealthy that he was targeted by predators ranging from the Cali Cartel to George HW Bush. I was left wondering who was the bigger villain, Pablo or George HW Bush...
If you’ve watched Narcos on Netflix, you’ll love this book

The Secret Agent's Pocket Manual: 1939-1945 by Stephen Bull

When this book first arrived, I thought it was one of those joke titles of the sort aimed at schoolboys with their abiding interest in such subjects. Instead, I found an incredible product packed with fascinating information.

The work commences with an informative and illuminating introduction by Dr Stephen Bull in which he explores the role of the secret agent in history and explains how and why so many people of all nationalities became involved in such clandestine operations during WW2. Whereas many books and movies have portrayed - both factually and fictionally, the heroic deeds of British and American agents parachuted into mainland Europe, it was the overwhelming early successes of Hitler's invading armies which led to so many other affected people also becoming involved. Consequently, English language instruction booklets containing various lessons and tricks of the trade were published and then translated into whatever languages suited those different nationalities. This is a faithful reproduction of the official Pocket Manual issued at that time.

The product contains details of just about everything someone employed in serious, secret and clandestine activities might need to know and, as such, makes for excellent reading. How to survive underwater, hiding your transmitter, creating hand and pedal generators (for powering that transmitter!), secret inks, how to encourage malingering amongst enemy forces and workers and, amongst so many other items, exploding cigarettes and lessons in hand-to-hand combat are all included.

Whereas we can now regard this book as something of a fun item, it really was the training manual of the day for those involved in a type of warfare which meant automatic death for being a spy if ever they were discovered - as so many were.

Stone Medicine: A Chinese Medical Guide to Healing with Gems and Minerals - Leslie J. Franks 2016

A comprehensive manual for using crystals, gems, and stones to address physical, emotional, and spiritual health conditions

• Includes an extensive Materia Medica detailing the healing and spiritual properties of 200 crystals and stones based on Classical Chinese Medicine

• Explores the role played by the color of each stone, its Yin and Yang qualities, crystalline structure, chemical composition, and topical and internal applications

• Explains how to make stone and crystal elixirs, wear stones as healing jewelry, use them in massage and energy work, and cleanse and recharge them

• Based on the oral teachings of Dr. Jeffrey C. Yuen, a Taoist priest from the ancient lineage of the Jade Purity School (88th generation) masters

In addition to herbalism and acupuncture, Chinese Medicine has a rich tradition of using stones as medicine, passed from generation to generation for thousands of years. In this comprehensive guide and extensive Materia Medica, Leslie J. Franks presents the Stone Medicine teachings of Dr. Jeffrey C. Yuen, an 88th generation Taoist priest from the ancient lineage of the Jade Purity School, which dates to the Han dynasty, 206 BCE.

Detailing the therapeutic properties of 200 gems, stones, minerals, and crystals, Franks begins with an extensive look at 15 different forms of quartz, followed by chapters on transformative stones, protective stones, nourishing stones, source energy stones, and alchemical stones. She explains the physical, emotional, and spiritual conditions each stone can treat and how their color, form, hardness, and energetic qualities affect us according to Chinese Medicine. She discusses how to make stone and crystal elixirs for internal and topical use, how to charge quartz with the healing properties of other stones, how to cleanse and recharge a stone after use, and how to combine stones to create healing formulas for individual conditions. She explains different techniques of wearing stones as healing jewelry and how to use them in massage and energy work. She examines the chemistry and sacred geometry of crystal structure, revealing how the minerals contained in the stones affect our physiology by supporting our Jing (Essence); by nourishing Qi (energy), blood, and fluids; and by clearing Wind, Cold, Damp, and Heat conditions that can lead to disease.

Including a thorough primer on Traditional Chinese Medicine and backed by modern scientific research, this book explains how stones access our deepest layers, vibrating ever so slowly, to initiate deep lasting change.
