Amateur Telescope Making - Stephen Tonkin

Many amateur astronomers make their own instruments, either because of financial considerations or because they are just interested. Amateur Telescope Making offers a variety of designs for telescopes, mounts and drives which are suitable for the home-constructor. The designs range from simple to advanced, but all are within the range of a moderately well-equipped home workshop. The book not only tells the reader what he can construct, but also what it is sensible to construct given what time is available commercially. Thus each chapter begins with reasons for undertaking the project, then looks at theoretical consideration before finishing with practical instructions and advice. An indication is given as to the skills required for the various projects. Appendices list reputable sources of (mail order) materials and components. The telescopes and mounts range from "shoestring" (very cheap) instruments to specialist devices that are unavailable commercially.

Atlas of the Moon: Revised, Updated Edition - Antonin Rukl

This is a great book for telescope users and a fine one for ordinary browsers. It is an up-to-date atlas of the observable part of the moon. Maps of the moon compose the bulk of the book's 224 pages.

The introduction discusses history, terminology, phases of the moon, and the moon's surface. This is followed by maps of 76 sections of the near side of the moon, each accompanied by a small locator map. Facing pages include place-names and their derivations as well as map coordinates. Following the maps are photographs of interesting lunar formations (craters, ring mountains, walled plains), advice on setting up and using a telescope, descriptions of eclipses, and a glossary. There is a thorough bibliography and index of named formations at the end of the book. One can look up Amundsen, for example, and locate the ring mountain named after him.

The only comparable works are Moon-Mars-Venus (Hamlyn, 1976) and Alter's Pictorial Guide to the Moon (1967). This new book has far more information clearly presented, and names are up-to-date. As director of the Prague Planetarium, the author is knowledgeable and explains terms clearly. Any library with even one patron interested in or studying astronomy should consider this book.

Lab 257: The Disturbing Story of the Government's Secret Germ Laboratory - Michael C. Carroll

Strictly off limits to the public, Plum Island is home to virginal beaches, cliffs, forests, ponds - and the deadliest germs that have ever roamed the planet. Lab 257 blows the lid off the stunning true nature and checkered history of Plum Island. It shows that the seemingly bucolic island in the shadow of New York City is a ticking biological time bomb that none of us can safely ignore.
Based on declassified government documents, in-depth interviews, and access to Plum Island itself, this is an eye-opening, suspenseful account of a federal government germ laboratory gone terribly wrong. For the first time, Lab 257 takes you deep inside this secret world and presents startling revelations on virus outbreaks, biological meltdowns, infected workers, the periodic flushing of contaminated raw sewage into area waters, and the insidious connections between Plum Island, Lyme disease, and the deadly West Nile virus. The book also probes what's in store for Plum Island's new owner, the Department of Homeland Security, in this age of bioterrorism.
Lab 257 is a call to action for those concerned with protecting present and future generations from preventable biological catastrophes.

Knowing real facts abut hypnosis will help you make wiser choices. The Hynek UFO Report - Joseph Allen Hynek

Dr. J. Allen Hynek is one of the best-known names in UFO research today. He heads the Centre for UFO Studies and was for twenty years scientific consultant to 'Project Blue Book', the American Air Force's long-running and controversial investigation into the UFO phenomenon. Now, in THE HYNEK UFO REPORT, Dr. Hynek presents his own expert, detailed analysis of the files of Project Blue Book - files which were only recently made public. He covers such vital aspects of the UFO experience as:
Radar sightings - and how the authorities explain them away.
The way Government officials try desperately to produce 'natural' explanations for UFO sightings even when such explanations are wildly unrealistic.
The various kinds of 'Close Encounter' (Dr. Hynek was the consultant to Columbia Pictures and Steven Spielberg on the blockbusting UFO movie CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND).

One of the true pioneers in the field of Ufology (UFO research) was Dr. J. Allen Hynek (1910-1986), an astronomer at Northwestern University in Chicago. From 1948 to 1969 he served as the top scientific consultant to "Project Blue Book", the US Air Force's official group which investigated UFO sightings and incidents. What makes Hynek especially credible is that he started out as a debunker - he thought UFOs were "nonsense" and helped the Air Force to debunk most sightings. However, as the years passed he gradually became convinced that some UFO sightings were not hoaxes or misidentified "normal" phenomena such as stars, balloons, meteors, etc. He also became increasingly unhappy with Project Blue Book's highly negative attitude towards UFOs, and in the late sixties he became openly critical of how Blue Book's staff "investigated" UFO reports (in many cases they didn't bother to make even a brief investigation of a UFO sighting - they simply made up an explanation and filed it away). When the Air Force shut down Project Blue Book in 1969, Dr. Hynek founded his own organization to study UFO reports (called the Center for UFO Studies, or CUFOS, it still exists today). He also worked tirelessly - albeit with limited success - to encourage his fellow scientists to take the UFO phenomenon more seriously. In the 1970's Dr. Hynek wrote two "serious" studies of the UFO phenomenon, and both books are today considered to be "classics" in the study of UFOs. The "Hynek UFO Report", originally published in 1977, offers UFO cases taken directly from the once-secret files of Project Blue Book. Dr. Hynek describes dozens of impressive, hard-to-explain UFO cases that cannot be easily dismissed as hoaxes or mundane phenomena such as birds, balloons, ball lightning, etc. The book is also well-written and Hynek displays a dry wit throughout the text. If you're a serious reader of the UFO phenomenon, then the "Hynek UFO Report" is a "must" for your library, but even if you're a general reader looking to read a good book about UFOs, then the "Hynek UFO Report" presents credible sightings that will hold your attention - and grip your imagination - for hours on end.

The Hunt for Zero Point: Inside the Classified World of Antigravity Technology - Nick Cook

This riveting work of investigative reporting and history exposes classified government projects to build gravity-defying aircraft--which have an uncanny resemblance to flying saucers.
The atomic bomb was not the only project to occupy government scientists in the 1940s. Antigravity technology, originally spearheaded by scientists in Nazi Germany, was another high priority, one that still may be in effect today. Now for the first time, a reporter with an unprecedented access to key sources in the intelligence and military communities reveals suppressed evidence that tells the story of a quest for a discovery that could prove as powerful as the A-bomb.
The Hunt for Zero Point explores the scientific speculation that a "zero point" of gravity exists in the universe and can be replicated here on Earth. The pressure to be the first nation to harness gravity is immense, as it means having the ability to build military planes of unlimited speed and range, along with the most deadly weaponry the world has ever seen. The ideal shape for a gravity-defying vehicle happens to be a perfect disk, making antigravity tests a possible explanation for the numerous UFO sightings of the past 50 years.
Chronicling the origins of antigravity research in the world's most advanced research facility, which was operated by the Third Reich during World War II, The Hunt for Zero Point traces U.S. involvement in the project, beginning with the recruitment of former Nazi scientists after the war. Drawn from interviews with those involved with the research and who visited labs in Europe and the United States, The Hunt for Zero Point journeys to the heart of the twentieth century's most puzzling unexplained phenomena.
