1. Selling Sickness: How Drug Companies are Turning Us All into Patients

This accessible study about the collusion between medical science and the drug industry emphasizes how drug companies market their products by either redefining problems as diseases (like female sexual dysfunction) or redefining a condition to encompass a greater percentage of the population.

Ray Moynihan, a health journalist for the New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet, and Cassels, a Canadian science writer, note, for instance, that eight of the nine specialists who wrote the 2004 federal guideline on high cholesterol, which substantially increased the number of people in that category, have multiple financial ties to drug manufacturers. Physicians now routinely prescribe cholesterol-lowering pills (statins) that may have perilous side effects, when many people could lower their risk of heart attack with less costly and dangerous steps, such as exercise and improved diet.

Through aggressive merchandising, funding of medical conferences and expensive perks, drug companies win doctors over to diagnosing these "diseases" and prescribing drugs for them. Unfortunately for these authors, much of this territory has been covered by several books in the past year, most notably Marcia Angell's The Truth About the Drug Companies

2. Freedom Fighters Manual (CIA) the cia’s easy to read book of useful tips to help topple your tyranny.

The Freedom Fighter's Manual was a fifteen-page booklet that was manufactured by the United States' Central Intelligence Agency and airdropped over Nicaragua in 1983. A Contra fighter gave it to a U.S. reporter in Honduras in 1984. The manual enumerated several methods by which the average citizen could cause disorder.

The publication describes myriad ways in which the average citizen could disrupt the everyday workings of the government. It begins with actions that require little to no risk at all, such as hiding or destroying important tools, calling in sick for work, and leaving lights and faucets on. It then progresses to instruct people to steal food from the government, release livestock from farming cooperatives, and bring down telephone lines. Four pages are devoted to disabling vehicles. By the end of the pamphlet, there are detailed diagrams showing how to make and use Molotov cocktails against police stations.

10. Bacteria and Viruses - Peggy Thomas

People do not realize how often they come into contact with bacteria and viruses. These microscopic organisms are in the air, on the surface of this book, and inside people’s bodies digesting their last meal.
Most people do not fully appreciate that microbes are responsible for the oxygen they breathe, the healthy vegetables on the kitchen table, the pungent cheese in the refrigerator, the clean clothes in the closet, and the clean water coming through the plumbing. Every aspect of people’s lives and every part of the natural world is affected, for better or worse, by the actions of bacteria and viruses.

And the worst comes in the form of disease. Even though the overwhelming majority of the encounters with microbes go unnoticed, people are quick to respond when a run-in gives them a runny nose, fever, upset stomach, or more severe symptoms. Some bacteria and viruses cause such pain and devastation that they become headline news. Every year novel microbes are discovered and new infectious diseases emerge. It is not big news when a new bacterium is discovered living harmlessly in the soil, but it is broadcast when a virus mysteriously crops up out of nowhere and killsunsuspecting victims.

11. How Invention Begins: Echoes of Old Voices in the Rise of New Machines - John Lienhard

Invention--that single leap of a human mind that gives us all we create. Yet we make a mistake when we call a telephone or a light bulb an invention, says John Lienhard. In truth, light bulbs, airplanes, steam engines--these objects are the end results, the fruits, of vast aggregates of invention. They are not invention itself.

In How Invention Begins, Lienhard reconciles the ends of invention with the individual leaps upon which they are built, illuminating the vast web of individual inspirations that lie behind whole technologies. He traces, for instance, the way in which thousands of people applied their combined inventive genius to airplanes, railroad engines, and automobiles. As he does so, it becomes clear that a collective desire, an upwelling of fascination, a spirit of the times--a Zeitgeist--laid its hold upon inventors. The thing they all sought to create was speed itself.

Likewise, Lienhard shows that when we trace the astonishingly complex technology of printing books, we come at last to that which we desire from books--the knowledge, the learning, that they provide. Can we speak of speed or education as inventions? To do so, he concludes, is certainly no greater a stretch than it is to call radio or the telephone an "invention."

Throughout this marvelous volume, Lienhard illuminates these processes, these webs of insight or inspiration, by weaving a fabric of anecdote, history, and technical detail--all of which come together to provide a full and satisfying portrait of the true nature of invention.

20. Assorted Nasties - David Harber 1993

For educational purpose only ,this book is a goldmine for anyone interested
in poisons their chemistry and effects.

Writers will find ASSORTED NASTIES a very useful guide to poisons and other chemical means of killing off a character. Based on the legendary Devil's Diary, a supposed chemical and biological agent manual produced by the CIA in the 1950s, this little manual is packed full of toxins and delivery systems from nicotine (yes, it's a poison!) to a pocket crossbow.

21. Dimensions: A Casebook of Alien Contact - Jacques Vallee

A mystery that has lingered in human imagination for many years, the mystery of unidentified
flying objects and their occupants, is coming back to the front pages of our newspapers with a
parade of new claims: not only are these objects seen in the sky and on the ground, but they are said
to have contacted humans and, in some cases, abducted them. The public has reacted to these stories
with a mixture of skepticism, awe, and fear. The lack of reliable data and the absence of serious
research are intensifying this concern.
Therefore the time has come to reexamine the UFO phenomenon and to reopen the archives that
deal with that ancient dream of our civilization, of every civilization: contact with alien beings.
Each culture has sought to assemble this puzzle in its own way, and each culture has contributed
something to the great pool of legends, folklore, and traditions that link human imagination with the
heavens. Today the rapid pace of technology precipitates a new awareness of the importance of the
problem. The modern reader needs a new perspective, a new paradigm in which fear can be set
aside and knowledge can prevail. Above all, he needs more facts.
In an effort to help answer this need, the present book represents the distillation of some twenty-five
years of research. It gathers and updates some previously published material into a new, more
manageable collection of the most significant events that have marked the rich history of the UFO
phenomenon. And it leads to a new conclusion: Although I am among those who believe that UFOs
are real physical objects. I do not think they are extraterrestrial in the ordinary sense of the term. In
my view they present an exciting challenge to our concept of reality itself.

23. The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies - Marilyn Barrett

“This book includes profiles on thirty-
two individual herbal medi-
cines and ten combination formulas.
These profiles include descriptions of
most of the major published clinical
studies, which have been analyzed by a
panel of authoritative reviewers. It is
obvious that great carewas taken to en-
sure completeness and accuracy of in-
formation, and the reviewers’ com-
ments regarding study quality are
especially informative and helpful.
Clinicians searching for detailed
and accurate information on herbal
clinical trials will find much in this text
that is useful. It is a significant achieve-
ment in the field of evidence-based
analyses of herbal medicine. It should
be of most help to clinicians or re-
searchers who want specific details on
herbal clinical studies that are not
readily available, or who are interested
in clinical-trial-quality assessments by
authoritative reviewers.”
Michael Rotblatt, MD, PharmD
Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine

24. The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way 1995

Professor of philosophy and director of Hampshire College's exchange program with exiled Tibetan scholars, Garfield provides the first Tibetan-to-English translation of eminent second-century Buddhist N ag arjuna's greatest work: M ulamadhyamik arik a. Reflecting Indo-Tibetan Pr asangika-M adhyamika (Middle Path) School commentaries by Buddhap alita and Candrakirti, it is aimed at Western philosophers, not philologists. Throughout this profoundly logical text, N ag arjuna meets contrasting dialectical arguments, thereby proving that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence and nothing originates independently of anything else. He forges a middle path between conventional and ultimate truths. In his comments, Garfield compares this complex doctrine with Western philosophical concepts of emptiness and essence, demonstrating its empirical stature. Kenneth Inada's Sanskrit translation, N ag arjuna (1970) is more accessible to general readers, emphasizing the Buddhist mentor as a benign mediator rather than a strict logician. Garfield's text successfully appeals to scholars and is recommended for academic rather than public libraries.?Dara Eklund, Los Angeles P.L.

26. George W. Bush, War Criminal?: The Bush Administration’s Liability for 269 War Crimes - Michael Haas 2009

Michael Haas's book on the Bush administration's war crimes is a carefully researched, fact-based assessment of many of the crimes committed by George Bush and his people, both domestically and internationally. America will not find its way again in the world until the Bush administration has been held accountable for them. Haas's identification of these crimes is an important step in advancing that goal.”–Vincent Bugliosi, author, The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder (2008)

“Mike Haas has compiled an impressive and comprehensive case to suggest that the Bush administration has committed numerous war crimes in relation to its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and its so-called "war on terror". The Bush administration has sought to put itself beyond the reach of the law, which should be intolerable in a civilized world.”–Dr. Eric Herring, Reader in International Politics at the University of Bristol, co-author of Iraq in Fragments: The Occupation and its Legacy

“This important and timely book, making use of evidence that is wholly within the public domain, establishes beyond any doubt that George W. Bush should and must be charged with the commission of war crimes--and not just one war crime--but 269 war crimes. It is a handbook of Bush war crimes that must be used by all of us: activists, politicians and anyone who cares about a better world. The Bush administration has taken us, as Cheney said it would, "to the dark side." Haas's book gives us the hope at least that the criminals in the Bush administration and Bush himself can be brought to justice.”–Michael Ratner, President, Center for Constitutional Rights

“269 war crimes! We have to go back to mid-twentieth century to find something similar. Shame on that president and his regime, shame on the media conspiracy of silence that gave us bits and pieces but not the whole picture, and enormous gratitude to Professor Haas for doing that overdue job! Next steps: a truth commission to get at the bottom of the rot in the "leader of the free world" and a world tribunal to draw the consequences.”–Johan Galtung, Professor of Peace Studies Recipient of the Right Livelihood Award

Book Description

George W. Bush, War Criminal? identifies and documents 269 specific war crimes under US and international law for which President Bush, senior officials and staff in his administration, and military officers under his command are liable to be prosecuted.

27. The New Imperialism (Clarendon Lectures in Geography and Environmental Studies) - David Harvey 2003

People around the world are confused and concerned. Is it a sign of strength or of weakness that the US has suddenly shifted from a politics of consensus to one of coercion on the world stage? What was really at stake in the war on Iraq? Was it all about oil and, if not, what else was involved? What role has a sagging economy played in pushing the US into foreign adventurism? What exactly is the relationship between US militarism abroad and domestic politics? These are the questions taken up in this compelling and original book. In this closely argued and clearly written book, David Harvey, one of the leading social theorists of his generation, builds a conceptual framework to expose the underlying forces at work behind these momentous shifts in US policies and politics. The compulsions behind the projection of US power on the world as a "new imperialism" are here, for the first time, laid bare for all to see.

28. World Without Cancer: The Story of Vitamin B17 - Edward Griffin 1996

ve said many times in the past that your great work World Without Cancer was destined to become a classic.... There is nothing basic in your book that is not as sound as the day it was published; time affords your work greater validation with each passing month...Thank you for your good judgment in "staying the course" with your classic... There are no errors in your book..." -- Ernst T. Krebs, Jr., PhD

"A clear and revolutionary insight into both the science and politics of cancer therapy." -- Dean Burk, Ph.D., Former Head of Cytochemistry, National Cancer Institute

"A milestone of careful research and penetrating analysis." -- John A. Richardson, M.D., Albany, California

"For the first time since I became a nurse 23 years ago, I do not fear cancer!" -- Mrs. R.E. Bruce, R.N., San Diego, California

"Griffins book... has had, it is no exaggeration to say, a tremendous influence on the attitude of many thousands of Americans toward cancer, alternative medicine, and the politics of cancer. In his deadpan, factually grounded but highly effective writing style, Griffin reviews the failure of much of orthodox cancer treatment; the little reported history, theory, and intriguing clinical nature of laetrile (a nutritional therapy made from the kernels of apricots and other fruits); and the Byzantine politics and economics of modern medicine and the international pharmaceutical cartel that have prevented many promising alternative therapies from being fully developed and made commercially available. The book is essential reading for a person with cancer, anyone interested in the contemporary history of alternative medicine, and anyone who likes a good story a story all the more amazing because it appears to be largely true. As a journalist who has reported on alternative medicine and the war on cancer for two decades (and with the help of many magazine editors and fact checkers along the way), I can attest to the basic accuracy of Griffins work, as well as its importance to one trying to understand an unusually complex area of modern life. Whether one accepts Griffins underlying thesis about the value of laetrile as an effective treatment, the insights into the medical business and the difficult road alternatives face that can be gleaned from reading World Without Cancer - New Edition make the book well worth the read." -- Peter Chowka, Natural HealthLine, 4/15/97

"Mr. Griffin has lifted the veil of mystery from Laetrile." -- Dr. Ernst T. Krebs, Jr., Discoverer of Vitamin B17

Product Description
Mr. Griffin marshals the evidence that cancer is a deficiency disease like scurvy or pellagra aggravated by the lack of an essential food compound in modem mans diet. That substance is vitamin B17. In its purified form developed for cancer therapy, it is known as Laetrile.

Why has orthodox medicine waged war against this non drug approach? The author contends that the answer is to be found, not in science, but in politics and is based upon the hidden economic and power agenda of those who dominate the medical establishment.

This is a new edition of the book. It is the most complete and authoritative treatise ever produced on Laetrile. It explains the theory by which Laetrile is believed to work. Case histories are included.

29. The Greek Tradition in Repulican Thought...$90.00 - ERIC NELSON 2004

Tracing the influence of ancient Greek sources on the development of republican theory in Europe and America, this book argues that an important tradition of republican thought, derived from the central texts of Greek moral and political philosophy, emerged in sixteenth century England. It contributed significantly to the ideological framework of the English Civil Wars and the American Revolution. Eric Nelson offers significant reinterpretations of several central texts of European political theory, as well as a radical reappraisal of ancient Roman historiography.

30. Supernatural Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind - Graham Hancock 2007

Less than 50,000 years ago mankind had no art, no religion, no sophisticated symbolism, no innovative thinking. Then, in a dramatic and electrifying change, described by scientists as "the greatest riddle in human history," all the skills and qualities that we value most highly in ourselves appeared already fully formed, as though bestowed on us by hidden powers. In Supernatural Graham Hancock sets out to investigate this mysterious "before-and-after moment" and to discover the truth about the influences that gave birth to the modern human mind.

Hancock's quest takes him on a detective journey from the stunningly beautiful painted caves of prehistoric France, Spain, and Italy to rock shelters in the mountains of South Africa, where he finds extraordinary Stone Age art. He uncovers clues that lead him to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to drink the powerful hallucinogen Ayahuasca with shamans, whose paintings contain images of "super-natural beings" identical to the animal-human hybrids depicted in prehistoric caves. Hallucinogens such as mescaline also produce visionary encounters with exactly the same beings.

Scientists at the cutting edge of consciousness research have begun to consider the possibility that such hallucinations may be real perceptions of other "dimensions." Could the "supernaturals" first depicted in the painted caves be the ancient teachers of mankind? Could it be that human evolution is not just the "meaningless" process that Darwin identified, but something more purposive and intelligent that we have barely begun to understand?

32. Crusader Castles in the Holy Land 1192-1302 - David Niclle 2005

The debacle of the Second Crusade in 1148 caused the Crusader States to realise the necessity of developing a more cautious strategy. The original expansionist spirit largely disappeared, and the Crusader States made priorities of strengthening their existing fortifications and towns and building new castles. These structures encompassed core aspects of Western European military architecture with the integration of rapidly developing Arab and Islamic traditions.Following Fortress 21: 'Crusader Castles in the Holy Land 1097–1192', this book examines the design, development and defensive principles of some of the best-known Crusader fortifications and castles, including Crac des Chevaliers, Castel Blanc, Arsuf, Margat, Atlit, Montfort and Acre.

33. British Colours & Standards 1747-1881 - Ian Summer 2001

In this first of a two-part sequence a respected vexillologist describes, explains and illustrates a wide variety of the standards and guidons carried during the 18th and 19th centuries by British Household, Regular, Yeomanry and Volunteer cavalry units. The successive regulations between 1747 and 1868 are supported by tables of 'ancient badges' and battle honours; by many examples of non-regulation practice (in the cavalier tradition of the British cavalry); and by ten dazzling plates by Richard Hook, detailing some 35 flags in full colour.

34. Scottish Baronial Castles 1250-1450 (Fortress) - Michael Brown, Adam Hook 2009

Devastated by the civil wars of the 17th century or by the neglect and deliberate destruction of their owners who saw them as archaic and barbaric, the vast majority of Scottish baronial castles built between 1250 and 1450 survive as little more than skeletal ruins. These reminders of Scotland's past have captured the imaginations of romantics, artists, writers and tourists since the late 18th century. Often set in spectacular surroundings, on cliff-tops, islands, and gorges, their ruined grandeur evokes a medieval world of sieges, banquets and murders, and provides a rare physical link with the Anglo-Scottish wars of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace.

This book examines the three periods of castle building in the years 1250-1450: the years of peace in the late 13th century; the six decades of war with the English when the castles became key centers for garrisons and government; and the post-war era of castle building and reconstruction. Covering castles in the Isles, the Lowlands and the Highlands, and featuring some of the most striking examples of the art, such as Caelaverock and Bothwell this book presents the story of these monuments in an accessible and highly-illustrated format.

35. The Tunguska Mystery - Vladimir Rubtsov 2009

The purpose of the book is a dual one: to detail the nature and results of Tunguska investigations in the former USSR and present-day CIS, and to destroy two long-standing myths still held in the West. The first concerns alleged “final solutions” that have ostensibly been found in Russia or elsewhere. The second concerns the mistaken belief that there has been little or no progress in understanding the nature of the Tunguska phenomenon. All this is treated by the author in a scholarly and responsible manner. Although the book does present certain unusual findings of Russian and Ukrainian scholars, it is important to stress that this is not a sensational book; it is, rather, a serious exposition of the results of rational investigations into a difficult scientific problem. We are demonstrating the true complexity of the problem that is now entering its second century of existence. Simple meteoritic models cannot explain all the characteristics of this complicated event, and therefore certain so-called “unconventional hypotheses” about the nature of the Tunguska explosion are to be considered as well.

36. A Brief History of Ancient Greece: Politics, Society, and Culture - Sarah B. Pomeroy, Stanley M. Burstein, Walter Donlan, Jennifer Tolbert Roberts 2004

The story of the ancient Greeks is one of the most improbable success stories in world history. A small people inhabiting a country poor in resources and divided into hundreds of quarreling states created one of the most remarkable civilizations. Comprehensive and balanced, A Brief History of Ancient Greece: Politics, Society, and Culture is a new and shorter version of the authors' highly successful Ancient Greece: A Political, Social, and Cultural History (OUP, 1998). Four leading authorities on the classical world offer a lively and up-to-date account of Greek civilization and history in all its complexity and variety, covering the entire period from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic Era, and integrating the most recent research in archaeology, comparative anthropology, and social history. They show how the early Greeks borrowed from their neighbors but eventually developed a distinctive culture all their own, one that was marked by astonishing creativity, versatility, and resilience. The authors go on to trace the complex and surprising evolution of Greek civilization to its eventual dissolution as it merged with a variety of other cultures. Using physical evidence from archaeology, the written testimony of literary texts and inscriptions, and anthropological models based on comparative studies, this compact volume provides an account of the Greek world that is thoughtful and sophisticated yet accessible to students and general readers with little or no knowledge of Greece.

Ideal for courses in Greek Civilization and Ancient Greece, A Brief History of Ancient Greece offers:
A more streamlined treatment of political and military history than Ancient Greece
Emphasis on social and domestic life, art and architecture, literature, and philosophy
Expanded coverage of women and family life, religion, and athletics
A new section on male homosexuality in ancient Greece
A revised art program featuring more than 100 illustrations and 17 original maps
Numerous "document boxes" that include primary source material

37. New theories of everything, 2nd edition, J. Barrow

I was pleased to take the opportunity, provided by the Press, to prepare
a new edition of Theories of Everything. Interest in this subject has continued
unabated since my first attempts to explain their scope and limitations,
and to place them in a broader cultural context than that of mathematical
physics. Many new possibilities have emerged in the pursuit of a final string
theory, and cosmology has taken an unexpected path into a realm populated
by many other possible universes. Both developments have undermined the
naïve expectations of many, that a Theory of Everythng would uniquely and
completely specify all the defining quantities of the Universe that make it a
possible home for life. There is a long way to go before the physicists’ Theory
of Everything is formulated and decisively tested. In the meantime, I hope that
this extended survey of the newest developments will help point readers in the
right direction and illuminate the way.

39. Seven Life Lessons of Chaos: Spiritual Wisdom from the Science of Change - John Briggs & David Peat

Synopsis
Explores the implications of chaos theory on life, spirituality, and the nature of the universe.

Seven Life Lessons of Chaos is the only book I have ever finished and begun again. This is not a "how to" book, but a piece of literature -- one that does not end, but continues to begin again. I began this book expecting "lessons" in the ordinary sense. Thinking I would be "shown how to do something," I braced myself for the pointer and the lectern and the maps. A non-scientist (to say the least), my only understanding of chaos was "messy and disordered." But like any good student, I waited for Briggs and Peat to teach me, in an orderly, structured way, their "lessons." What happened, though, was something else entirely. Instead, by using chaos theory as a metaphor, Briggs and Peat offered a series of overlapping and merging lenses through which I began to see the world in new ways. Like a great piece of literature, the words began to fall away and as I glanced to watch them tumble, the world appeared in sometimes fleeting, sometimes sustained glimpses -- a world that is at once more chaotic and more possible to be with. This is not a book that "tells you" how to give up control, but one that offers shifting glances into the relieving realization that you didn't have it in the first place. In the end (which is also the beginning), what remains is an oddity so beautiful you will want to touch it. And when you do, you will realize it is your life.

Briggs & Peat have done what needed to be done; write a book which connects a powerful scientific theory to reality which does not require mathematics to "get it". That's not to say that the math is not important, but, rather that a physical theory can be significantly grasped and experienced in a relativly non abstract manner. Fractal time, especially, was a tour de force in moving away from linear time perceptions. I didn't think it could ever be done. Well done, John and David! Lawrence Hudetz

40. Thick Black Theory - Li Zongwu 2009

Thick Black Theory is a philosophical treatise written by Li Zongwu (1879-1944), a disgruntled politician and scholar born at the end of the Qing dynasty. It was published in China during the years of chaos in China, when Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Qing dynasty and set up the Chinese Republic. It may be regarded as the Chinese equivalent of Machiavelli's 'The Prince'. It went through several printings before being banned in China as subversive.

Li was a scientist of political intrigue. He wrote: "When you conceal your will from others, that is Thick. When you impose your will on others, that is Black." Thick Black Theory describes the ruthless, hypocritical means men use to obtain and hold power: "Thick Faces" (shamelessness), and "Black Hearts" (cruelty), according to the author's view of history.

41. Religion Is Not About God: How Spiritual Traditions Nurture Our Biological Nature And What to Expect When They Fail - Loyal Rue 2006

Thousands of religious traditions have appeared over the course of human history but only a relative few have survived. Some speak of a myriad of gods, others of only one, and some recognize no gods at all. Volumes have been written attempting to prove the existence or nonexistence of supernatural being(s). So, if religion is not about God, then what is it about? In this provocative book, Loyal Rue contends that religion, very basically, is about us. Successful religions are narrative (myth) traditions that influence human nature so that we might think, feel, and act in ways that are good for us, both individually and collectively. Through the use of images, symbols, and rituals, religion promotes reproductive fitness and survival through the facilitation of harmonious social relations. Drawing on examples from the major traditions—Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism—Rue shows how each religion, in its own way, has guided human behavior to advance the twin goals of personal fulfillment and social coherence.

As all faiths are increasingly faced with a crisis of intellectual plausibility and moral relevance, this book presents a compelling and positive view of the centrality and meaning of religion.

42. Entropic Creation (Science, Technology and Culture, 1700-1945) - Helge S. Kragh 2008

Entropic Creation" is the first English-language book to consider the cultural and religious responses to the second law of thermodynamics, from around 1860 to 1920. According to the second law of thermodynamics, as formulated by the German physicist Rudolf Clausius, the entropy of any closed system will inevitably increase in time, meaning that the system will decay and eventually end in a dead state of equilibrium. Application of the law to the entire universe, first proposed in the 1850s, led to the prediction of a future 'heat death', where all life has ceased and all organization dissolved. In the late 1860s it was pointed out that, as a consequence of the heat death scenario, the universe can have existed only for a finite period of time. According to the 'entropic creation argument', thermodynamics warrants the conclusion that the world once begun or was created. It is these two scenarios, allegedly consequences of the science of thermodynamics, which form the core of this book. The heat death and the claim of cosmic creation were widely discussed in the period 1870 to 1920, with participants in the debate including European scientists, intellectuals and social critics, among them the physicist William Thomson and the communist thinker Friedrich Engels. One reason for the passion of the debate was that some authors used the law of entropy increase to argue for a divine creation of the world. Consequently, the second law of thermodynamics became highly controversial. In Germany in particular, materialists and positivists engaged in battle with Christian - mostly Catholic - scholars over the cosmological consequences of thermodynamics. This heated debate, which is today largely forgotten, is reconstructed and examined in detail in this book, bringing into focus key themes on the interactions between cosmology, physics, religion and ideology, and the public way in which these topics were discussed in the latter half of the nineteenth and the first years of the twentieth century.

43. Major Acts of Congress (3 vol. set) - Brian K. Landsberg 2003

In 262 entries, this 3-vol. set examines landmark pieces of legislation, explaining the historical factors that led to the proposal of each act, looking at the adoption process and assessing each act's impact on American life. All aspects of legislation are covered, including the National Prohibition Act, the Civil Rights Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act, the Freedom of Information Act and much more.

A detailed introductory essay concentrates on Congress itself, reviewing its organization and procedures. A great addition to collections in need of resources on government, civics, citizenship, history and the law.

44. The Middle Ages: A Concise Encyclopaedia - H. R. Loyn 1989

Dictionaries and encyclopedias on this era proliferate. This volume aims "to provide both the beginner and the specialist with a single volume that presents a summary of current thought on the key protagonists, events and themes" in European history from c.400 to c.1500. The beginner will find about 1000 useful entries, strong on England and France, weak on Spain, Central and Eastern Europe; able on political but weak on social history (e.g., no entry on the family or on marriage). The brief bibliographical entries are very dated, showing scant familiarity with the huge recent American, German, and French scholarship. The illustrations are imaginatively selected but poorly captioned. Serious students should consult the 12-volume Dictionary of the Middle Ages ( LJ 2/1/83) . For others, Joseph Dahmus's Dictionary of Medieval Civilization ( LJ 10/1/84) should suffice.

49. Ancient Pagan & Modern Christian Symbolism - Dr. Thomas Inman

Christians feel that they have a divine monopoly on truth. They do not. This book irrefutably shows how much of Christianity's symbols are from far earlier "pagan" sources. This book does not disparage Christianity but provides a connecting link for what has been a continuous source of symbolic knowledge handed down to us from the ancients. Numerous illustrations.
