1. Conspiracies and Secret Societies: The Complete Dossier - Brad Steiger, Sherry Steiger 2006

With all the books out there focusing on specific conspiracy theories, it's great to find a book that is so comprehensive that it literally covers them all…. This is a fantastic book for anyone who's been wondering about conspiracies, but didn't know where to start. One warning, however: Don't loan the book out and expect to get it back soon.

Allan Handelman, Host of the Allan Handelman Show syndicated on radio

This is a captivating look at a topic that fascinates many. Recommended . . ..

Booklist

Conspiracies and Secret Societies: The Complete Dossier is a volume that I can highly recommend to my readers. It would make a handsome addition to the library shelves of anyone who enjoys a good intellectual challenge posed by tales of mystery, conspiracy, and the alleged activities of secret societies. This book delves into and reports on all sorts of brain-teasing mysteries in vast multiples, from all over the world, both ancient and modern.

Brent Raynes, Alternate Perceptions Magazine

Conspiracies and Secret Societies ? is an encyclopedia of the aliens, anarchists and axes of evil?-a mix of the real and delusional?-that have haunted us since man put chisel to stone?. Who knew conspiracies could be so fun and easy to concoct?

David J. Foster, News Gleaner (Philadelphia)

You won't find a clearer, more encyclopedic, or more honest look at conspiracies and secret societies.... I highly recommend this to all of my listeners. www.Erskineonradio.com

I predict this book will come to be the standard by which all efforts at codifying the world's hidden - and inextricably linked - power mechanisms will be judged. It is a true geopolitical, historical classic...a marvel by any measure...and will be read decades from now as the ultimate window back into a world seemingly gone mad.

Jeff Rense , Editor-in-Chief of Rense.com

Being in the media for over 20 years, I have read many books and have interviewed many authors, and once in a great while a true gem comes to my attention. CONSPIRACIES AND SECRET SOCIETIES THE COMPLETE DOSSIER by Brad and Sherry Steiger, is just that! …Here at last is all the information in one fantastic collection! No more searching through many different publications to find one here or two there. This one book says it all. It is well written, painstakingly researched, and very compelling, a trademark of all Brad and Sherry's work.

Joe Who, http://www.joewho.com/

If you could only own one book on conspiracies, this is it. It's the culmination of meticulous, balanced research, seasoned storytelling, and a sense for the reader's needs, earned over decades by the Steigers' submersion in this field. Whenever I need information on conspiracies, whether personally or for show preparation, this is the book I will grab from the shelf.

Joshua P. Warren, author and host of Speaking of Strange (Asheville, NC, News Radio 570)

Plenty of books have been written individually about select secret societies: now here's a handy A-Z reference which covers them all under one cover, providing over five hundred pages reviewing 300 individuals, organizations, and events which have puzzled modern times. From contemporary issues such as satellite snooping to historical background on societies such as the Freemasons, entries provide plenty of coverage and describe major events and secret societies with relevance to today's world. CONSPIRACIES AND SECRET SOCIETIES: THE COMPLETE DOSSIER is a must for any collection strong in investigative inquiry. Diane C. Donovan, California Bookwatch

Midwest Book Review

a must for the conspiracy / secret society buff to own.

Rob McConnell, Host of the "X-Zone" radio show

[A] wonderful read: It calmly and rationally explains the sort of urban myths and conspiracy theories that we all hear dribs and drabs about around the water cooler, but of which few of us really know the details? In a straightforward manner, [the Steigers] present evidence for a theory and evidence against it. ? [An] always entertaining, sometimes funny, occasionally disturbing reference book.

Steven Greenhut, Orange County Register

Startling allegations. Suppressed evidence. Missing witnesses. Assassinations. Cover-ups and threats. Documented connections to even deeper intrigue. Allusions to the New World Order. Coincidences? too many to be mere coincidence? American history is replete with warnings of hidden plots by the Illuminati, the Freemasons, the Zionists, the Roman Catholics, the Communists, World Bankers, the Secret Government, New Agers, and Extra-Terrestrial Invaders, to name a few.

The truth is out there, somewhere, maybe. In this age of minimum individual privacy and maximum government secrecy, the truth sometimes seems a battered relic, more myth than reality, and more valuable for its rarity. Shedding light onto the darkest and most enduring of stories, Conspiracies and Secret Societies: The Complete Dossier is a compelling encyclopedic overview of 300 individuals, organizations, and events where official claims and standard explanations of actions and events remain clouded in mystery.

Well known by denizens of late-night radio and with some 200 titles between them, best-selling authors Brad Steiger and Sherry Hansen Steiger extend their reputation as expert chroniclers of unusual crime and strange occurrences. In Conspiracies and Secret Societies, they describe major conspiracies and significant secret organizations through the ages, with an emphasis on modern skullduggery and concealment. The Steigers present doubts concerning official reports or the dominant understanding of events and explore valid, occasionally outrageous counter-claims. Information on the background and responses relating to conspiracies and secret societies is intelligently presented?helping to clarify mystery and intrigue, claims and explanations. The authors explain why questions linger about these topics like chemtrails (aerosol operations considered a ?normal and expected consequence? of daily life and aircraft flights). Ahh, the whiff of scandal.

With nearly 100 illustrations and organized in an engaging A-to-Z format, the complete dossier encompasses topical issues, historical riddles, old and enduring societies, modern-day initiates, favorite topics among conspiracy theorists, and more recent claims. Is all the world staged? Click on the Table of Contents link above to sample the plots and the cast of characters. Do you want to know a secret? It?s a great book sure to satisfy conspiracy enthusiasts, whatever their level of paranoia. About Brad Steiger

2. Libricide: The Regime-Sponsored Destruction of Books and Libraries in the Twentieth Century -
Rebecca Knuth 2003

Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings," declared German poet Heinrich Heine. This book identifies the regime-sponsored, ideologically driven, and systemic destruction of books and libraries in the twentieth century that often served as a prelude or accompaniment to the massive human tragedies that have characterized a most violent century.

3. Samurai Armies 1550-1615 - Richard Hook 1979

In 1543 three Portuguese merchants entered a turbulent Japan, bringing with them the first firearms the Japanese had ever seen: simple matchlock muskets called arquebuses. They proved a decisive addition to the Japanese armoury, as for centuries the samurai had fought only with bow, sword and spear. In 1575, one of the greatest original thinkers in the history of samurai, Oda Nobunaga, arranged his arquebusiers in ranks three deep behind a palisade and proceeded, quite literally, to blow his opponent’s cavalry to pieces, marking the beginning of a new era in Japanese military history.

4. At War with Metaphor: Media Propaganda and Racism in the War on Terror - Erin Steuter, Deborah Wills 2008

At War with Metaphor offers a compelling analysis of our public discussions of the war on terror and the binding conceptual metaphors through which they are framed. Examining the images of animal, insect, and disease that shape and limit our understanding of the war, and tying these images to historical and contemporary uses of propaganda and media filters, the authors explore how news media, including political cartoons and talk radio, are enmeshed in this damaging, dehumanizing language.

5. Bracing for Armageddon?: The Science and Politics of Bioterrorism in America - William R. Clark 2008

Since September 11th, the threat of a bioterrorist attack--massive, lethal, and unpreventable--has hung in the air over America. Bracing for Armageddon? offers a vividly written primer for the general reader, shedding light on the science behind potential bioterrorist attacks and revealing what could happen, what is likely to happen, and what almost certainly will not happen.
The story opens with a riveting account of a bioterrorism scenario commissioned by the U.S. government. Using this doomsday tableau as a springboard, Clark reviews a host of bioterrorist threats (from agroterrorism to a poisoning of the water supply) and examines not only the worst-case menace of genetically engineered pathogens, but also the lethal agents on the CDC's official bioterrorism list, including Smallpox, Anthrax, Plague, Botulism, and Ebola. His overview of attempted bioterrorist attacks to date--such as the failed Aum Shinrikyo attempts in 1995 in Japan and the Anthrax attack in the US following 9/11--bolstered by interviews with a range of experts--shows why virtually all of these attempts have failed. Indeed, he demonstrates that a successful bioterrorism attack is exceedingly unlikely, while a major flu epidemic (such as the deadly epidemic of 1918 that killed millions worldwide) is a virtual certainty. Given the long odds of a bioterrorist attack, Clark asks, has the more than $40 billion the United States has dedicated to the defense against bioterrorism really been well spent? Is it time to move on to other priorities?
In contrast to the alarmist fears stoked by the popular media, William Clark here provides a reassuring overview of what we really need to worry about--and what we don't.

6. Opium, Soldiers and Evangelicals - Harry Gelber 2004

This book questions the universal belief that England's 1840-42 war with China was an "Opium War." What really worried London was "insults to the crown," the claim of a dilapidated and corrupt China to be superior to everyone, threats to British men and women and seizure of British property, plus the wish to expand and free trade everywhere. It was only much later that general Chinese resentment and Evangelical opinion at home - and in America - persuaded everyone that Britain had indeed been wicked and fought for opium.

7. Arthur and the anglo-saxon waes - David Nicolle 1984

The Arthurian Age; the Celtic Twilight; the Dark Ages; the Birth of England; these are the powerfully romantic names often given to one of the most confused yet vital periods in British history. It is an era upon which rival Celtic and English nationalisms frequently fought. It was also a period of settlement, and of the sword. This absorbing volume by David Nicolle transports us to an England shrouded in mystery and beset by savage conflict, a land which played host to one of the most enduring figures of our history

8. The Polish Armies (1) 1569-1696 (Men-at-arms 184) - By Richard Brzezinski 1991

Few people will realise that at one time the Polish state was one of Europe's great powers. One of the chief instruments of her success was undoubtedly her army, which though small can claim many accomplishments and major successes in the 16th and 17th centuries. Richard Brzezinski redresses this imbalance by providing a portrait of Polish armies from 1569-1696, detailing their history, organisation, arms, armour, insignia and dress, accompanied by numerous illustrations and eight superb full page colour plates by Angus McBride.

9. The Polish Armies 1569-1696 (2) (Men-at-arms 188) - By Richard Brzezinski 1999

The 17th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was almost as varied as modern America. Alongside Slavs lived Lithuanians and other Balts, Germans, Tatars, Armenian merchants, Jewish traders, and even a remarkably large populations of Scots. This variety of cultures had a strong influence on the Polish army. Along with the predominantly Polish and Lithuanian 'winged' hussars served numerous foreigners from both within and outside the Commonwealth: Tatars and Cossacks, Wallachians, Transylvanians, Moldavians, Hungarians, Serbians and Albanians; and from the West, French, Italians, Dutch, Walloons, Swedes and Scots. Richard Brzezinski's companion volume to Men-at-Arms 184 completes his fascinating examination of Polish armies from 1569-1696.

11. Tudor Warships (1): Henry VIII's Navy (New Vanguard 142) - By Angus Konstam, Tony Bryan 2008

In this book, maritime expert Angus Konstam explores the fledging Tudor Navy, tracing its history from its origins as a merchant fleet under Henry VII through to its emergence as a powerful force under Henry VIII. Examining the operational use of Henry VIII's warships the author analyses the battle of the Solent in 1545, in which Henry's fleet took on a French fleet of 200 ships - much larger than the Spanish Armada decades later. Despite the well-documented loss of his flagship, the Mary Rose, Henry's smaller force succeeded in preventing a French victory. Although many people will have heard of the mighty Mary Rose, this book will tell the story of more than just the tragic sinking of Henry's flagship, describing how one of history's most dynamic kings grew the navy from the five warships that were his father's legacy to 53 deadly gunships at the forefront of his empire-building strategy. Through contemporary illustrations and intricate artwork, the author traces the changing face of warship design during the Renaissance as Henry paved the way for English dominance of the sea.

12. The Illusion of Control - Seyom Brown 2003

This provocative book assesses the implications of a disturbing trend in U.S. security policy: an increased willingness to use military force as an instrument of diplomacy. In The Illusion of Control, Seyom Brown shows how U.S. officials are relying on force to counter a wide range of threats to America's global interests—eclipsing previous strategies that restricted the use of military force to situations in which the country's vital interests were at stake.Brown points out that a disposition to employ military power broadly as an instrument of diplomacy was on the rise well before September 11, 2001— and it shows every sign of persisting into the future. While resorting to force may seem to be a reliable way to establish control over a disorderly world, Brown cautions that expecting to gain and maintain control through military prowess could turn out to be a dangerous illusion. In fact, employing new military technologies in an effort to control international terrorist activities, wars, and civil conflicts is likely to pull the United States into excessive commitments and imprudent action.

13. A-10 Warthog (Colors and Markings 24) By Dana Bell 1994

A-10 paint schemes encompass twenty years of Air Force camouflage development. The Warthog carried twelve color schemes before the first camouflage was standardized for production; three additional patterns have seen operational use. Many paints and schemes, including European I, first flew on an A-10.
The first third of this book documents the evolution of Warthog color schemes, paying a bit more attention to technicalities than is usual for a Colors & Markings volume. (While I apologize for the overkill, the details which emerged during research seemed just too valuable to omit.) The book's second section, covering units, is organized by base in an effort to keep up with the Air Force's gerrymandering of wings. And the last six pages document Warthog markings used in Desert Storm.
Among the many contributors to this book, I would like to single out a few for special thanks. Theron Rhinehart arranged to release many Fairchild Republic records, while Jay Miller loaned his entire A-10 collection for several years. Charles Wyndham and Barry Spink provided much of the material for the Desert Storm section. Jim Rotramel and Brian C. Rogers reviewed the text, as did Wally Van Winkle, who also provided a majority of the photos. And finally, a word of thanks to Jack Morris, who first drew my attention to the world of A-10 colors with a 1976 IPMS slide show.

16. Buyology: Truth and Lies About Why We Buy - Martin Lindstrom 2008

How much do we know about why we buy? What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? An eye-grabbing advertisement, a catchy slogan, an infectious jingle? Or do our buying decisions take place below the surface, so deep within our subconscious minds, we’re barely aware of them?

In BUYOLOGY, Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking, three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study, a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what seduces our interest and drives us to buy.

17. The Spirit Book: The Encyclopedia of Clairvoyance, Channeling, and Spirit Communication - Raymond Buckland 2005

The Spirit Book, the latest in Wicca Buckland's extensive occult oeuvre (Buckland's Book of Spirit Communications), cuts a wide swath through the history of spiritualism, its precursors, and widely related supernatural subjects…. There is nothing else quite like this resource on the market."

Library Journal
"Students of the goofily strange will go for this ‘encyclopedia of clairvoyance, channeling and spirit communication.’"

PEOPLE Magazine
The fascinating history of Spiritualism is coaxed into the material realm as the object of this perceptive and sweeping overview by that legendary author of the occult and supernatural, Raymond Buckland. Containing more than 500 entries and 100 illustrations, The Spirit Book is the comprehensive encyclopedia to Spiritualism and its related subjects. Plus it provides full biographies of every prominent person connected to the field.

The Spiritualism movement began in the mid-18th century and focuses on communication with the spirits of the dead. Followers believe that spirit communication occurs primarily through mediums, although non-mediums can also communicate through a variety of methods, including automatic writing or the use of an Ouija board. Spiritualism is currently enjoying a renaissance due in part to the public appearances of mediums such as John Edward and Colin Fry and the shared belief by a growing number of people that communication with the dead is possible, however far out of cell-phone range they might be.

Drawing on decades of research, writing, and transcendence, Buckland describes sundry methods of channeling, events associated with Spiritualism, including séances and exorcism, organizations focused on clairvoyance, and a colorful host of mortals?famous and infamous?who delved into Spiritualism. Nostradamus, Helena Blavatsky, and Edgar Cayce receive their due, as well as Joan of Arc, William Blake, Susan B. Anthony, Winston Churchill, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mahatma Gandhi, Harry Houdini, and Mae West (look up and see her sometime).

The Spirit Book explores Qabbalah, Sibyls, Fairies, Poltergeists; phenomena such as intuition and karma; objects useful in the attempt to cross the divide, including tarot cards, flower reading, and runes; and related practices such as Shamanism, transfiguration, meditation, and mesmerism. The Encyclopedia covers the history of Spiritualism as well as offshoots such as Kardecism (in France, South America, and the Philippines), channeling, fraud, psychic research, and possession. It also reports on investigations of contemporary manifestations, including electronic voice phenomena and spirit appearances on TV screens (that static might be Aunt Margaret trying to get through). About Raymond Buckland

One of the world's foremost experts on the occult, Raymond Buckland has been studying and practicing fortune telling, Witchcraft, Gypsy magic, and other aspects of the supernatural for more than half a century. Of Romany (Gypsy) descent, Buckland was born in London in 1934. He obtained a doctorate in anthropology and, in 1962, moved to America. His spiritual quest led him to the works of Wicca pioneer Dr. Gerald Gardner. Before long, Buckland began serving as Gardner's spokesperson in the United States and was initiated into the Craft shortly before Gardner's death in 1964.

He has had nearly 40 titles published, including The Witch Book, The Fortune-Telling Book, and the classic Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft. Buckland has been the subject of and has written countless newspaper and magazine articles, appeared on many television and radio shows, and lectured on college campuses nationwide.

18. The Astrology Book: The Encyclopedia of Heavenly Influences - James R. Lewis 2003

It is hard to imagine a more comprehensive reference encyclopedia to this topic than the volumen at hand."

American Reference Books
"Although aimed at the believer, Lewis' work may be confidently consulted by the skeptic seeking basic information about astrology."

Starman walks among us again. Updated and expanded, The Astrology Book: The Encyclopedia of Heavenly Influences defines and explains more than 800 astrological terms and concepts from air signs to Zeus and everything in between. Ten years after the publication of The Astrology Encyclopedia, James R. Lewis updates and expands this definitive work on celestial forces for anyone seeking to expand their knowledge on the influence of the stars and other heavenly bodies on human personality, behavior, and fate.

A recent USA Today poll disclosed that more than 25 percent of the population has some belief in astrology. Lewis uses the power of the information age to explore the scientific, historic, and popular basis behind the ancient art, providing the reader with a thorough understanding of basic astrology. One thing is for sure: students, soothsayers, and star watchers everywhere will learn there's more to astrology than just the twelve signs of the Zodiac and never knowing all six winning lottery numbers at one time. Not just what's your sign, baby, but what's up with your chart?

Students of the sun and stars and the layman interested in knowing more about those passionate Scorpios or intuitive Pisceans can examine the total astrology culture, famous astrologers, heavenly bodies, and even pesky technical terms. And to further them on their star quest, The Astrology Book includes a special section on casting a chart, plus a new chapter that explains and interprets every planet in every house and sign. The text also includes a table of astrological glyphs and abbreviations, and a list of organizations, books, periodicals, and Web sites all dedicated to the study of influences reigning from the heavens. 20. Armageddon Now: The End of the World A to Z - Jim Willis, Barbara Willis 2005

Don't be left behind. Who knew that doomsday would be so hot? Environmental disasters, disease epidemics, the popularity of reality television, and strife in the Middle East, may all be signs that time has come today. Weak and ailing after the end of the Cold War and the financial spree of the nineties, the timeless notion that the end is near is once again exerting a powerful influence on pop culture, politics, religion, and Mel Gibson.

So you don't believe we?re on the eve of destruction? Authors Jim and Barbara Willis mine the religious and secular divide as they examine the history of apocalyptic beliefs in Armageddon Now. The authors explain the various omens and prophecies as well as the actual events that may trigger the end, such as collisions with asteroids, nuclear war, the oil crisis, global warming, and famine. They report that even the death of Pope John Paul II has some prognosticators predicting eminent doom, or at least doom coming relatively soon, which in any case would make investing in treasury bonds a bigger risk.

But as the authors point out, there have always been plenty of signs pointing to the boom in gloom: predicting the order of finish kept Nostradamus in print for centuries, and the ancient Mayans helpfully projected that calendar sales would drop to nothing after 2012. They are all part of the long history on the end of history.

Fire or ice, bang or whimper, asteroid or alien, act of God or human folly, Armageddon Now is all over doomsday prophecies. From alpha to omega, it is packed with 200 entries and 100 illustrations. Satan, saints, survivalists, and evangelical preachers known for their views on Biblical prophecies receive their due. In the end, the end has never been so thoroughly covered as in Armageddon Now: The End of the World A to Z. It's the last word for the end user. About Jim Willis

While doing most of the research for this book, Jim and Barbara Willis lived for a year and a half in a 30-foot fifth-wheel RV trailer, traveling throughout the Southwest, a mostly pleasant way to envision the final big bang. Jim Willis has served as an ordained minister with the United Church of Christ for more than thirty years and wrote, produced, and hosted the “Through the Bible Series,” a daily drive-time radio program. He is an author, musician, college professor, and lecturer, teaching courses in comparative religion and cross-cultural studies. His study of the world’s religions, The Religion Book: Places, Prophets, Saints, and Seers, was published in 2004. He also has recorded and produced two albums of gospel music.

About Barbara Willis Born on the island of Guam in the Marianas islands, Barbara Willis has lived in exotic locales such as St. Croix, Martha’s Vineyard, Italy, and South America, as well as California, Arizona, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and various parts of New England. In addition to being well-traveled, she has an extensive history in community theater and has worked in occupations as varied as real estate, newspaper advertising, the restaurant business, and library research.

21. California Tenants: A Guide to Residential Tenants’ and Landlords’ Rights and Responsibilities 2006

What should a tenant do if his or her apartment needs repairs? Can a landlord force a tenant to move? How many days notice does a tenant have to give a landlord before the tenant moves? Can a landlord raise a tenant’s rent? California Tenants—A Guide to Residential Tenants’ and Landlords’ Rights and Responsibilities answers these questions and many others.
Whether the tenant is renting a room, an apartment, a house, or a duplex, the landlordtenant relationship is governed by federal, state, and local laws. This booklet focuses on California laws that govern the landlord-tenant relationship, and suggests things that both the landlord and tenant can do to make the relationship a good one. Although the booklet is written from the tenant’s point of view, landlords can also benefit from its information.

22. Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology, 4th Edition (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series) - By Richard A Harvey, Pamela C Champe, Richard Finkel, Luigi Cubeddu, Michelle A Clarke 2008

Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology, Fourth Edition enables rapid review and assimilation of large amounts of complex information about the essentials of medical pharmacology. Clear, sequential pictures of mechanisms of action actually show students how drugs work, instead of just telling them. As in previous editions, the book features an outline format, over 500 full-color illustrations, cross-references to other volumes in the series, and over 125 review questions. Content has been thoroughly updated, and a new chapter covers toxicology. New to this edition will be a companion Website containing all of the illustrations, fully searchable text, and an interactive question bank.

23. The Encyclopedia of World History (html)- Peter Stearns

This sixth edition, completely updated and revised by a team of scholars led by George Mason University's Peter N. Stearns, packs all it can into a year-by-year and region-by-region chronicle of human life on planet Earth. The book is big, the type is small, and the maps and genealogical tables are excellent. Stearns has added more material on women, leisure activities, and demographics to this edition, and the sections on Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Latin America are much different from the previous version. The Encyclopedia of World History is highly recommended for serious history buffs.

24. 34 Days: Israel, Hezbollah, and the War in Lebanon - Amos Harel 2009

The border abduction of two Israeli soldiers on the morning of July 12, 2006, set in motion what would eventually become known as the Second Lebanon War. After 34 days and more than 5,000 casualties--including those injured--a ceasefire was signed, and the geopolitics of the region were changed immeasurably. A #1 bestseller in Israel for months, 34 Days brilliantly reconstructs the progression of the war, from the soldiers' abduction through the hasty Israeli decision for an agressive response; the fateful discussions within the Cabinet and among senior Israeli command; and the heavy fighting in south Lebanon. It also delves into the raging diplomatic battles that took place in Paris, Washington, and New York, which would eventually end the war.

25. The Holocaust Encyclopedia

Although most libraries now contain many shelves of books describing various aspects of the Holocaust, comprehensive one-volume histories or reference books on the subject are rare. Thus, The Holocaust Encyclopedia, edited by Walter Lacquer (a modern European historian who has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, and Tel Aviv University, among others), fills an important gap in existing Holocaust literature. His book gathers accessible articles by many of the world's leading Holocaust scholars on the full range of people and places involved, from Adolph Hitler and Gypsies to Russia and the Soviet Union. The articles are complemented by a comprehensive chronology and an excellent bibliographical essay, and by almost 300 illustrations, including maps and photographs. The photographs, by Adam Kaczkowski, are particularly well chosen and designed. Photography's importance in the act of Holocaust remembrance is poignantly understated by Roger Greenspun in his entry on "Cinema and Television," in which he writes, "This was the first great human catastrophe to have so many pictures taken of it." The Holocaust Encyclopedia will become the first stop in the library for high school students wishing to learn about the Holocaust. It will also provide college students and adults with a reliable, authoritative, big-picture perspective on aspects of a genocide that, no matter how fully it is known, will never fully be understood.

The last two decades of the 20th century witnessed a veritable explosion of Holocaust scholarship. We have endowed university chairs devoted to Holocaust studies, and museums and monuments to the Shoah bloom. Yet the public at large is no closer to an understanding of those momentous events today than we were two generations ago. Now comes a book that can at least partly remedy that situation. Editor Laqueur, a notable Holocaust historian (Generation Exodus, Forecasts, Feb. 19), has done a masterful job of bringing together more than 100 contributors from nearly a dozen countries, including such leading scholars in their fields as James Young, Stanley Payne, Michael R. Marrus, Raul Hilberg, Israel Gutman, Saul Friendl„nder, David Cesarani, Daniel Carpi and Christopher Browning. The result is a comprehensive one is tempted to say exhaustive, but the subject can never be exhausted volume. Of particular value are a 17-page chronology of events; the bibliographical essay by Robert Rozett, director of the Yad Vashem Library in Jerusalem; and Adam Kaczkowski's haunting and powerful photographs. These are joined by approximately 250 illustrations that cover all aspects of the Nazi extermination program but also offer intimate portraits of the culture of Jewish life in Nazi-occupied Europe. Entries range in length from a few sentences to a dozen pages on Hitler, anti-Semitism and Auschwitz. Laqueur asks, "Is it possible now, more than fifty years after the Holocaust, to write about it with authority?" The encyclopedia itself is authoritative, and Laqueur argues that "it is most unlikely... that any future revelations will necessitate a radical revision of the present picture." Finally, Laqueur is eloquent and humble in acknowledging the epistemological shortcomings of this (or any) work on the subject: "Documents cannot possibly tell the full story; they do not smell, they do not starve or freeze, they are not afraid." But this is no ordinary reference work; in it we can indeed see and even smell the horrors of the Final Solution, and yes, we are afraid. (Apr. 19)Forecast: There will undoubtedly be much media attention paid to this momentous book, aided by its publication on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

28. The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil - by Philip Zimbardo 2007

Psychologist Zimbardo masterminded the famous Stanford Prison Experiment, in which college students randomly assigned to be guards or inmates found themselves enacting sadistic abuse or abject submissiveness. In this penetrating investigation, he revisits—at great length and with much hand-wringing—the SPE study and applies it to historical examples of injustice and atrocity, especially the Abu Ghraib outrages by the U.S. military. His troubling finding is that almost anyone, given the right "situational" influences, can be made to abandon moral scruples and cooperate in violence and oppression. (He tacks on a feel-good chapter about "the banality of heroism," with tips on how to resist malign situational pressures.) The author, who was an expert defense witness at the court-martial of an Abu Ghraib guard, argues against focusing on the dispositions of perpetrators of abuse; he insists that we blame the situation and the "system" that constructed it, and mounts an extended indictment of the architects of the Abu Ghraib system, including President Bush. Combining a dense but readable and often engrossing exposition of social psychology research with an impassioned moral seriousness, Zimbardo challenges readers to look beyond glib denunciations of evil-doers and ponder our collective responsibility for the world's ills. 23 photos.

What makes good people do bad things? How can moral people be seduced to act immorally? Where is the line separating good from evil, and who is in danger of crossing it?

Renowned social psychologist Philip Zimbardo has the answers, and in The Lucifer Effect he explains how–and the myriad reasons why–we are all susceptible to the lure of “the dark side.” Drawing on examples from history as well as his own trailblazing research, Zimbardo details how situational forces and group dynamics can work in concert to make monsters out of decent men and women.

Zimbardo is perhaps best known as the creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment. Here, for the first time and in detail, he tells the full story of this landmark study, in which a group of college-student volunteers was randomly divided into “guards” and “inmates” and then placed in a mock prison environment. Within a week the study was abandoned, as ordinary college students were transformed into either brutal, sadistic guards or emotionally broken prisoners.
By illuminating the psychological causes behind such disturbing metamorphoses, Zimbardo enables us to better understand a variety of harrowing phenomena, from corporate malfeasance to organized genocide to how once upstanding American soldiers came to abuse and torture Iraqi detainees in Abu Ghraib. He replaces the long-held notion of the “bad apple” with that of the “bad barrel”–the idea that the social setting and the system contaminate the individual, rather than the other way around.
This is a book that dares to hold a mirror up to mankind, showing us that we might not be who we think we are. While forcing us to reexamine what we are capable of doing when caught up in the crucible of behavioral dynamics.

29. Unhastening Science: Autonomy and Reflexivity in the Social theory of Knowledge

This book offers a new account of what makes science special among other human pursuits, critically engaging with a variety of approaches, especially constructivist and relativist studies of science and technology. It focuses on the studied "lack of haste" of science, its relative freedom from stress and its socially sanctioned withdrawal from the swift pace of ordinary life. Unhastening Science offers a balanced and thoughtful argument which emphasizes the dangers of cosseting science from the "scourge" of internal competition while at the same time highlighting the need for "distance" between the process of scientific thought and the faster machinery of politics, business, sports, and the media.

31. Out of Our Heads: Why You Are Not Your Brain, and Other Lessons from the Biology of Consciousness - Alva Noe 2009

Alva Noë is one of a new breed—part philosopher, part cognitive scientist, part neuroscientist—who are radically altering the study of consciousness by asking difficult questions and pointing out obvious flaws in the current science. In Out of Our Heads, he restates and reexamines the problem of consciousness, and then proposes a startling solution: Do away with the two hundred-year-old paradigm that places consciousness within the confines of the brain.

Our culture is obsessed with the brain—how it perceives; how it remembers; how it determines our intelligence, our morality, our likes and our dislikes. It’s widely believed that consciousness itself, that Holy Grail of science and philosophy, will soon be given a neural explanation. And yet, after decades of research, only one proposition about how the brain makes us conscious—how it gives rise to sensation, feeling, and subjectivity—has emerged unchallenged: We don’t have a clue.

In this inventive work, Noë suggests that rather than being something that happens inside us, consciousness is something we do. Debunking an outmoded philosophy that holds the scientific study of consciousness captive, Out of Our Heads is a fresh attempt at understanding our minds and how we interact with the world around us.

Not surprisingly, these curious chemicals fascinated some of the foremost thinkers of the twentieth century, fourteen of whom were interviewed for this book. Higher Wisdom offers their fascinating anecdotes, invaluable knowledge, and hard-won wisdom—the culmination of fifty years of research and reflection on one of the most intriguing and challenging topics of our time.

33. Great Civil War Projects You Can Build Yourself - Maxine Anderson

Great Civil War Projects You Can Build Yourself is a prime example of the supplemental books that are out there for teachers to get ideas for projects their students can do for a particular unit. Maxine Anderson provides a brief introduction to the Civil War that talks about how it all began and who were some of the important political and military leaders on both sides, but obviously a history textbook is going to give young students more details (i.e., the names, dates, and places that students will need to know on the test). But the two main sections of the book are devoted to projects that help students understand what live was like on the battlefield and on the homefront.

39. Government Secrecy: Decisions Without Democracy - David Banisar, Deputy Director, Privacy International 2007

Excessive secrecy is the enemy of public accountability and democratic governance. Unfortunately, it is becoming standard operating procedure for many government officials. Vice President Dick Cheney’s recent insistence that his office is not subject to secrecy regulations that apply to the executive branch is just the latest evidence of a systematic campaign to keep information about government activities out of the hands of the American public.
Freedoms of Information laws are grounded in the recognition that knowledge about the government’s actions is the necessary first step in oversight and accountability. Most Americans recognize the need to safeguard national security information from improper public disclosures that would damage the national interest. But national security has become a blanket excuse to withhold information from the public as well as from Congress, especially in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The National Security Archive has documented widespread agency mismanagement and obstruction which lead to delays as long as 17 years in responding to public Freedom of Information Act requests. Only one in four agencies is complying with the Electronic Freedom of Information Act a decade after it passed.
Of course, the right to know is also undermined by the release of information that is inaccurate or misleading.
At the federal level, politics increasingly trumps sound science: reports on key environmental issues are altered by political appointees; information about HIV/AIDS is manipulated to promote a particular ideological viewpoint; and federal employees are muzzled from sharing their expertise.
The misuse of secrecy and the manipulation of science and other information undermine the public’s right to know and the health of our democracy. And they threaten the health of the public as well: a fire at a chemical plant situated near a neighborhood could pose a serious threat to residents’ health, but it is difficult for individuals to learn the most basic information about hazards to which their families may be exposed. The preface to this report, written by Republican Robert Barr and Democrat John Podesta, reflects that the importance of the public’s right to know is not a partisan issue; it is a fundamentally American issue.
Over the years, regardless of the political party in charge, our three organizations have challenged excessive government secrecy and offered ideas to protect the public’s right to know. For example, in 1987, People for the American Way, OMB Watch, the Benton Foundation, and the Advocacy Institute launched a public education campaign to draw attention to the ways in which government was withholding information from the public. One element of that campaign was the publication by People for the American Way of Government Secrecy: Decisions Without Democracy, a primer on secrecy that serves as the model for this publication.

45. Persons, Souls and Death: A Philosophical Investigation of an Afterlife - David H. Lund 2009

Awareness of mortality is the price of intelligent consciousness. This book argues that a person is essentially an immaterial subject of conscious states who, though intimately linked by causal ties to the body, is nevertheless distinct from it. The book also examines apparently paranormal occurrences supporting the belief that some persons have survived bodily death. Cases of near-death experiences, apparitions, reincarnation experiences and mediumship phenomena are presented and discussed. Though it might seem contrary to natural law for a person to exist apart from a body and properly functioning brain, these cases suggest otherwise. Critical evaluation of alternative interpretations is provided.

49. Sacred Objects and Sacred Places: Preserving Tribal Traditions - By Andrew Gulliford 2000

Sacred Objects, Sacred Places combines native oral histories, photographs, drawings, and case studies to present current issues of cultural preservation vital to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians. Complete with commentaries by native peoples, non-native curators, and archaeologists, this book discusses the repatriation of human remains, the curation and exhibition of sacred masks and medicine bundles, and key cultural compromises for preservation successes in protecting sacred places on private, state, and federal lands.

The author traveled thousands of miles over a ten-year period to meet and interview tribal elders, visit sacred places, and discuss the power of sacred objects in order to present the essential debates surrounding tribal historic preservation. Without revealing the exact locations of sacred places (unless tribes have gone public with their cultural concerns), Gulliford discusses the cultural significance of tribal sacred sites and the ways in which they are being preserved. Some of the case studies included are the Wyoming Medicine Wheel, Devil’s Tower National Monument, Mount Shasta in California, Mount Graham in Arizona, and the Sweet Grass Hills in Montana. Federal laws are reviewed in the context of tribal preservation programs, and tribal elders discuss specific cases of repatriation.

Though the book describes numerous tribal tragedies and offers examples of cultural theft, Sacred Objects and Sacred Places affirms living traditions. It reveals how the resolution of these controversies in favor of native people will ensure their cultural continuity in a changing and increasingly complex world. The issues of returning human remains, curating sacred objects, and preserving tribal traditions are addressed to provide the reader with a full picture of Native Americans’ struggles to keep their heritage alive.
