Defeat of the Nazi War Machine

1945. Hitler is dead and his ‘Thousand Year Reich’ lies in ruins. Germany is decimated, its surviving population struggling to find food and shelter. Hundreds of thousands are living like refugees, desperate searching for lost loved ones. For the American and British troops now occupying Germany, it has been a long and bloody war. Mostly conscripts they want to go home now. But the job isn’t finished yet.

To explain to the Allied troops why they couldn’t return home, the British and American governments made a number of powerful and chilling films – collected together on this video for the very first time.

In ‘Here is Germany’, Gls are shown a terrifying portrayal of German brutality and evil containing unflinching images of concentration camp victims and a century of German aggression. The message is clear: if we do not occupy these people, they will rise up and do even more terrible things. ‘Your Job in Germany” echoes the same sentiments, while ‘A Defeated people’ looks at the British Zone of Occupation but warns of the potential in Germany for greater evil. ‘That Justice Be Done’ looks at the preparations of Nuremberg and how the Nazis will be punished.

These historic films are put into context by a superb, extra length combat documentary showing in graphic detail how the Nazi war machine was smashed by Allied troops, and a look at how Germany did eventually re-emerge from the pyre of the Second World War.
