Daniel Sheehan (1:02:33)
Daniel Sheehan, JD is a graduate of Harvard Law School, a founder of the Christic Institute, and a Professor of World Politics at the University of California. Mr. Sheehan has a long and distinguished history in public interest service.
He co-founded with Sara Nelson the Christic Institute in Washington, DC, which for nearly two decades was the country's preeminent public-interest law firm. The Christic Institute was directly responsible for surfacing and prosecuting the unconstitutional conduct of George Bush, along with senior and numerous members of his administration in the Iran/Contra scandal during the 1980s. They also co-directed the Karen Silkwood case (which stopped the construction of all new private nuclear power stations in the United States from 1979); the Three-Mile Island case (which stopped the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission from dumping the radioactive waste materials from the damaged Three-Mile Island Nuclear Facility into the Susquehanna River); and the American Sanctuary Movement case (which declared unconstitutional the efforts of the Reagan/Bush Administration to deport legitimate political refugees from the United States back to El Salvador or Guatemala). Dan also served as legal counsel to the New York Times in the Pentagon Papers case and represented Fathers Daniel Berrigan and Phil Berrigan during their Viet Nam activism. Mr. Sheehan was the Director of the Strategic Initiative to Identify the New Paradigm launched by President Mikhail Gorbachev’s State of the World Forum in San Francisco.
In 1994 Dan defended Dr. John Mack before an review panel of the Harvard Medical School in the wake of Mack's book Abduction: Human Encounters With Aliens. This was not his first, nor his last, encounter with the important issue of extraterrestrial-related phenomena. In 1977, while general counsel to the United States Jesuit Office of Social Ministry in Washington, DC., he served as a special consultant to the United States Library of Congress Congressional Research Office Project on Extraterrestrial Intelligence ordered by President Jimmy Carter. In this capacity, he was given access not only to the classified portions of the United States Air Force's infamous “Project Blue Book” files but to the confidential report prepared for the Science & Technology Committee of the United States Congress by the Library of Congress Congressional Research Office pursuant to this Presidential assignment. What he saw changed his life.
His ongoing projects include the New Paradigm Institute which holds that there exist eight separate, internally consistent worldviews, or paradigms. These paradigms are best understood when placed on a spectrum. The public policy positions that correspond with each paradigm, in each issue area, are key to understanding where we've been and where we need to go, as individuals, a nation and a global family. What we call the "New Paradigm" is but one of the eight worldviews. The New Paradigm Institute will bring the most promising new knowledge from a wide variety of fields - including physics, ecology, religion, and philosophy - directly to bear on a wide spectrum of American public policy issues.
Another project involves investigating the potential secret illegal dumping, by U.S. Government contractors, of deadly radioactive nuclear waste materials on Native American Reservations across the country on behalf of The Traditional Elders of The Lakota Nation in North and South Dakota.
He also remains general counsel and a director of the Institute for Cooperation in Space (ICIS). "During my thirty years in the field of public interest law and public policy, I have supervised professional investigations into the illegal smuggling of weapons-grade plutonium, the illegal supply of arms to terrorist organizations by covert operations and government agents, and into ultra-"black" weapons programs unknown even to the most trusted congressional officials. I have come to believe that keeping weapons out of interplanetary space is the most important contribution we can make to the future of this planet. The time to begin this task is now."
