Ghosts & Orbs
Investigator and radio host Ross Hemsworth discussed his explorations of anomalous phenomena, including his research into orbs and ghosts. While filming the show 'Ghost Detectives,' in the UK, at a site that was allegedly haunted by a young girl, he distinctly heard a child's voice say "May I play?" He noted that this was a Victorian, rather than modern style of speaking.

He investigated a pub at Lilley Arms where the owner had requested he come in to exorcise a ghost. She had asked the entity, a man dressed in Victorian-era clothes, what he was doing in her establishment. "Madam, I think it is you that is in my room," he told her. This led Hemsworth to conclude that the spirit may be co-existing with us, but in a different dimension or parallel realm, taking place in an earlier time frame-- and we may not have the right to try and expel such beings.

Orbs, the globe-like objects that appear in digital photographs, are one of the strangest phenomena of our time, Hemsworth commented. Many of these photos cannot be explained by dust, moisture and camera malfunction, and further, orbs have moved on command, implying they have some type of intelligence, he said. Cryptozoological Creatures
Researcher Nick Redfern spoke about a variety of cryptozoological creatures including chupacabras, Mothman, Bigfoot and werewolves. He investigated the spate of chupacabras sightings that took place in Puerto Rico in the mid-1990s, in which a creature that sucked the blood of livestock was said to have a monkey-like face, red glowing eyes, talon-like claws, and leathery wings. Black triangle sightings, 'Men in Black,' government personnel and the vicious chupacabras attacks were possibly all connected, he detailed.

He learned through interviews of locals that the chupacabra incidents of the 90s were predated by similar attacks several decades earlier-- a vampire-like creature was reportedly seen in Puerto Rico's El Yunque rain-forest. In Texas, Redfern has collected numerous reports of anomalous winged creatures, including Mothman-type beings-- humanoid creatures with large wings.

He's also looked into tales of werewolves. Rather than humans metamorphosing into wolves, accounts suggest large monstrous wolves that can walk on either two or four legs. They may have a paranormal aspect to them, with the ability to materialize and vanish, he added.

Ghost Voice Recordings
Filling in for George, Art Bell (email) was joined by Brendan Cook & Barbara McBeath of the Ghost Investigators Society (G.I.S.), who brought along a collection of new and 'best of' spirit voice recordings, known as Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP).

In one clip captured at The Brewery Lodge in Virginia City, Nevada, the voice of a woman can be heard inquiring, "Are you alone?" followed by Cook commenting on his EMF detector. While at a mausoleum, ghostly laughter fills the room after McBeath invites the spirits to communicate with her. On that same investigation, the G.I.S. team recorded Cook falling down some stairs and then what sounds like a sympathetic child asking him, "Are you okay?"

In a recording from Deer Lodge Prison in Montana, the sound of a creaking steel door is followed by a man's voice pleading, "Help, I'm in here." Art also played a clip recorded at an area of Deer Lodge called Siberia. In it a G.I.S. member can be heard asking, "Did the guards kill you or did you kill yourself?" followed by an old man responding, "I almost had the key." At Rawlins Prison in Wyoming, the team recorded the sound of a man screaming as if he were being tortured.

One of the most heartbreaking EVPs of the night was taken at a former mental hospital called The Exchange Building. Recorded on a laptop in a purportedly empty room, the disturbing clip records what sounds like a young child being drowned in a tub of water (Streamlink audio clip from 04/2/05 show: Win | Real). The two also presented an EVP recorded at a witch's house, where a child can be heard declaring, "There was blood."

Witchcraft & Wicca
Author and practicing witch Deborah Lipp shared insights about witchcraft and Wicca. Witchcraft is a practice, while Wicca is a religion, she explained. Worshipping nature and a male and female God are the tenets of the religion, and there are currently half-a-million pagans (many of whom are Wiccan) in North America, she stated.

Magic is pushing the improbable to make it probable, rather than making something impossible happen, said Lipp, who noted that the best target for a spell is typically oneself. Spells involve clarifying what you want, raising your power, and then directing this power towards your goal. The timing of spells interacts with lunar cycles with a waning moon best for decreasing something, and a waxing moon for increasing. Healing is one of the primary goals that witches deal with, she added.

Invoking magic can make a person more vulnerable to psychic energies, said Lipp, who recommended creating a "psychic shielding" around oneself: Visualize a beneficial shield around the body (often a glowing white light) into which no negative energies can enter. She also spoke about her use of Tarot cards-- the symbols of the cards can help the reader find a path to their psychic ability.

Spotlight on Samhain
Halloween can trace its lineage to Samhain (pronounced Sowen) practiced by the ancient Celtic cultures of the British Isles. Today's modern Wiccans or witches celebrate Samhain as one of their high holidays, harkening back to many of the age-old Druidic practices. Translated as "summer's end," Samhain is considered an ideal time for magic and communing with the spirits, as the veil between our world and the next is said to be at it's thinnest.
