Charles T. Tart (born 1937) is an American psychologist and parapsychologist known for his psychological work on the nature of consciousness (particularly altered states of consciousness), as one of the founders of the field of transpersonal psychology, and for his research in parapsychology.

His books "States of Consciousness" and "Altered States of Consciousness" are required reading, in my estimation. I will upload his text collection in a day or two.

will take a peek

Wouldn't it be great if transpersonal psychology was the dominant paradigm in modern mental health practice! I guess it's coming up in a grass roots movement. I'd love to find a good psychologist/shaman in my area.

Nice to see other psychology content on ConCen as well. Thanks for sharing.

I've been trying to picture that situation you describe (if transpersonal psych were the dominant paradigm in mental health practice). It's interesting for me to see how difficult it is for me to picture that. I think part of the issue lies with the fact that Tart challenges the basic materialistic approach of psychology (study the external behaviour and the pathology) and seeks instead to look holistically at the overall of the mind. It is almost closer to William James's "Varieties of Religious Experience" but here we are talking about varieties of *perception*. That's why i love it so much. Mental practitioners would have to stop looking *solely* for physical explanations and broaden their view to include the possibility that some spiritual traditions might be better suited to different personality types.

For one type of person. Buddhism might work better; for another, Christian prayer might work better. Tart is interesting in that he seeks to study which personality fares better under which technique. Very useful if other researchers would just pick up on this. Can think of it as *applied* mindfulness more than the usual theoretical gobbledygook one usually finds. Eckhart Tolle's "Power of Now" is an awesome philosophy BUT it won't work for everybody. So what might be better for other types of minds? Or even different places in the development and maturation of individuality?

techniques for misfit teen males in North America
techniques for the broken hearted
techniques for the overcoming work-related stress
techniques for insomniacs
techniques to focus the creative mind
techniques to quiet the inner voice

etc

I know that those topics have certainly been the focus of a lot of my own "transpersonal" development

thank you for this

Thank you and I look forward to the text files you upload
