Voting irregularities in Canada's federal election

Voting in Ottawa Centre, Hintonburg, poll #121, a returning officer named Mark V. asked me for photo ID. I asked him if I was required to provide it in order to vote. He replied, "Yes". He told me that otherwise people could vote for someone else. I told him Election Canada's web site and the Elections Act say otherwise. I asked him a second time: "Do I need to show you photo ID in order to vote?" Again he said yes. He referred to a document showing the accepted forms of ID. One of them clearly stated that any ID accompanied by another document showing proof of address was sufficient. No photo ID required. Then of course he tried to backtrack, but it was too late.

So here's this smug little prick with a smirk and a condescending tone, lecturing me about why photo ID is a necessity to prevent voter fraud, who was made a laughingstock in front of his peers and the voters. He is a paid official for Elections Canada, yet he fails to understand the procedures he has been charged with applying.

He has been reported to the scrutineers.

same old same old

Hi Nibs, same thing happened to me about 3 or 4 "Selections" ago. Although I had the required ID but not photo, some goof was not going to let me vote. There was a bit of back & forth but since the polling station was in the lobby of my building one of the other officers, who actually lived there as well and knew me, just told buddy to back off.
This year, no issues...because there was no one and nothing to vote for. NO party is willing to address ANY issue I feel is important; they're all taboo subjects.

Anyway, glad to read you stuck it to him but I doubt his supposed superiors will do anything about it. I think it's one of those unwritten policies, i.e. harass potential voters in any way possible.

That does seem to be the case. As for Trudeau, my eternal optimism tells me we have a small window where we can hold his feet to the fire long enough for him to be forced to address the real issues, like our banking system.

Trudeau etc.

Nibs, you're far more of an optimist than I am. The same folks that ran PET's government from behind the scenes will surely be running Justin's.
Regarding the banking system, that was one of my personal "taboo" issues that no one mentioned. And seeing as PET actual got Canada off of borrowing money from the Bank of Canada for mere pittance in the 70's and moved us to borrowing from the five big commercial banks with jacked up rates does not really give me much hope.

But I welcome being proved incorrect in such an instance.

Keep well.
