Who are the documentary-makers with a BUNCH of interesting documentaries that make people think differently?
I'm thinking of:
* Oliver Stone
* Adam Curtis
who else is big on a mainstream-media level?
Then there's:
* James Corbett / Corbett Report
* Metanoia Films / Scott Noble
* Truthstream Media - Aaron & Melissa Dykes
* Zeitgeist / Peter Joseph
In the health/medical field there are more:
Jeff Hays
The Truth About... folks
Jana ESP
Who springs to mind, when you think of who has contributed most to the field?
His early films woke up more than any other film maker IMO. They were initially amateurish, but he improved. We can fault his delivery style but not his work ethic.
Interesting...do you recommend anything in particular by him?
Great question...and useful summary.
At some point, it would be good to broaden the question just to discuss favorite or helpful documentary filmmakers more generally...not for especially political reasons
Actually, to make it easy for others, let me ask that question another way:
what documentary changed your life? or at least had a lasting impact on the way you see things?
I recently enjoyed Adam Curtis's "Hypernormalization" because it helpfully brought together a lot of things that were free floating in my mind.
But longer term, I definitely appreciated the works of the documentary filmmakers who brought "Devil's Playground" (about the Amish youth subculture who are let loose into the "devil's playground" outside), as well as the NXIVM docs shared by members here, and also "Holy Hell" which I was surprised more people didn't download; it beautifully captures in one arc the multi-decade story of seduction and betrayal of a charismatic cult leader.
If only we could view our political leanings in the same way, and many of the popular ideas freely shared today. But alas it is almost impossible to see a cult from the inside...
add Douglas Rushkoff to the list, for me
Corbett and Truthstream Media; best in class.
Academy of Ideas puts out some pretty polished and thoughtful material.
Gotta give a hat tip to Mark Passio's work too but they are more lectures than documentaries.
I'll give an honourable mention to a local fella from Edmonton I've crossed paths with a few times in Teace Snynder that puts out some content rich and watchable 30 minute shorts that can grab the interest of even the uninitiated.
