Why bother asking a snarky question, then laughing about it, when you think you already know the answer?

I have a question to which I think I know the answer: How many times have you watched his show lately?

It never ceases to amaze me how these Tucker Carlson episodes continually divide the membership here: the conservative types love 'em and the liberal types despise 'em.

Personally, I find Ben Shapiro or Jordan Peterson far more enlightening to watch. Who needs more feeds from news buzzards? These talking heads are just vultures circling around the corpse of today's values.

I would accept it as "keeping people honest" or "being the conscience of society" if only it didn't lead to just aggression.

These are all just opinions in a dogma-eat-dogma world

Only those liberal types who don't know what the word "liberal" means. Carlson is a classic liberal. He believes in freedom for himself and others, without infringing on others' rights. That's the definition of a liberal. Live and let live.

There are a lot of totalitarian people that label themselves as liberal, yet want to control the lives of others. There are a lot of politically partisan hacks that see the world as a fight between "left" and "right" but have no idea that the party system has been completely corrupted by greed. Their simplistic Us vs Them mentality dooms them to being ruled by those who wish them harm.

True, liberalism is an historical outgrowth of conservatism. Or put differently: the "liberal" politics of the west might only have arisen as a result of earlier conservative efforts to eradicate infectious disease. In simple terms? You only get liberals after you have conservatives. Check out Jordan Peterson's latest interview with Randy Thornhill for an illuminating discussion about that.

Still, knowing that doesn't obviate the fact that you can be "liberal" and still be a "social conservative". The words exist for a reason, no need to try to "lash the wind". There will always be a spectrum.

I don't see the eradication of disease as conservative. It's progressive.

I don't see the two as opposites. I don't really know what a conservative is, other than someone who wants to "conserve". But life is more complicated. There is plenty that should be conserved, and plenty that needs fixing. I don't think anyone disagrees with that. So in that sense, nobody is 100% "conservative". Everyone is a mixture of conservative and progressive, depending on the situation.

I see the opposite of liberal to be totalitarian. It's about how much freedom citizens have within the framework of common law.

Nice conversation. Thank you for your thoughtful posts.

Re: disease & conservatism
You may enjoy reading about pathogen avoidance and authoritarianism…check out peterson’s recent interview of randy thornhill. Actually, never mind: I will PM you tomorrow (late PM here and going to bed now).

Re: classical liberal
I understand your terms, no issue. I’m just saying we have perfectly good modern terms we can use: liberal and conservative. Times change and we have as much chance of tying language down as we do of lashing the wind.

I’m more inclined to say the opposite of libertarianism is totalitarianism, per the Nolan Chart.

Anyway, cheers for now

I like the Kyle Dunnigan version of Ben Shapiro better than the original😀

Here is a helpful Nolan Chart with examples, in case of interest. This four pointed spectrum is more practical than the more typical double pole:
