When Carl Honoré attended his seven year old's son parent-teacher night, he was told by an art teacher that his son was "gifted". By the next morning, Honoré had researched art courses and private tutors in his area. He was not prepared for his son’s reluctance to participate in this grand artistic plan. "Why do grown-ups always have to take over everything?"

This astute comment struck Honoré and he began researching how childhood has been "taken over" by adults in a way never seen before in history. His book Under Pressure: Rescuing Childhood from the Culture of Hyper-Parenting, published by Knopf, examines how the drive to be perfect parents and have perfect kids is backfiring. He believes we need to find a new approach to child-rearing that allows children to be children.

Originally from Edmonton, Alberta and currently living in London, England, Carl Honoré is also the author of In Praise of Slow: How a Worldwide Movement is Challenging the Cult of Speed, a book that questions our need for speed, and stresses quality over quantity.
