1. VISUAL AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION

This manual is primarily a ready reference to assist the ground observer in aircraft recognition and identification.
It provides information on current operational aircraft of the United States and foreign countries, which may be
observed worldwide in the combat area. It can be used as source material for personnel conducting unit training in
visual aircraft recognition.
The procedures in this publication apply throughout the US Army. The data is based on the best information
available at the time of publication; however, it is not all-inclusive because of some classification guidelines. This
publication, by nature, has a built-in time lag, and some aircraft may still be under development or classified at the
time of writing, but may be fielded or unclassified at, or after, publication.
The provisions of this publication are the subject of international agreement QSTAG, 699, Aircraft Recognition
Training.

These puzzles are meant to be fun. How many puzzles you solve is
not as important as how many you enjoy thinking about. Some
of them are even challenging to research physicists, and some
were generated by research articles that have appeared only recently in
physics journals, so these topics may not have been part of physics just
10 years ago! It would be a rare reader who could provide detailed
solutions to all the puzzles. Indeed, sometimes you may need to think
a bit to even understand the answer. If we included all the steps, this
book would double its present size. We offer no apologies, but we do
try to provide all the key steps to make each answer complete on its
own. If you ?nd the puzzles perplexing and intriguing, we have suc-
ceeded in our mission.
Mad about Modern Physics can be read with pro?t by anyone who
has had some exposure to a year of introductory physics and is eager to learn more about its applications and its more recent discoveries.
Most puzzles are nonmathematical in character and require only a
qualitative application of fundamental physics principles. Many
physics concepts are de?ned directly or indirectly in the questions or
in the answers, so they can be found with the aid of the index. How-
ever, even someone who knows the subject will quickly realize that the
application of physics to the real world can be quite challenging, and
in this sense this is not an elementary book.
More than three hundred follow-up references provide further
resources for interested readers. These references—to journal research
papers, books, and magazine articles—are included with only some of
the puzzles, typically those that are either controversial or that involve
relatively new concepts. There was no space to include a more com-
plete list of references. Consequently we had to make choices, and we
apologize to the authors whose work may have been left out or inad-
vertently overlooked.

become too technical. Science has taught us that “For every action there is a

feeling of confusion is appropriate because the information you are now digesting
contradicts much of the information you have been spoon fed throughout your

7. Attack Helicopter Operations

This manual is the Army's doctrinal manual for attack helicopter operations. It is
designed to assist attack helicopter commanders, their staffs, and subordinate company
commanders in the conduct of training and combat operations. It also serves as a guide
for corps, division, and brigade commanders and their staffs. This manual discusses the
organization, capabilities, and employment of attack helicopter units.
This manual incorporates current Army doctrine based on FM 100-5. It describes the ARI
force structure and the associated TTP based on currently fielded systems. It is
recognized that the fielding of the Army's planned digital information systems and
modern aircraft, such as the AH-64D, will alter the TTP in this manual. During this
transition to the future, lessons learned, equipment upgrades, and digital TTP will be
captured and incorporated into the next edition of this manual.
This manual sets forth doctrinal principles that guide the conduct of light and heavy
attack helicopter operations. It addresses specific TTP to clarify or emphasize these
principles. Users must apply this doctrine within the capabilities and limitations of their
units and develop SOPs that address specific techniques and procedures.
