SYNOPSIS

During the early years of Ufology an invasion took place. Serious Ufologists were upstaged in the media by people who claimed they had met martians and been taken aboard flying saucers to other planets. Although serious researchers discounted their stories and tried desperately to exclude these Contactees, as they were called, from the serious side of Ufology, they did not succeed. The Contactees became the dog and pony show at the expense of the scientific study of Ufology.

Giant Rock, California was the Mecca for the modern Contactee religious movement during the 1950s and early 1960s. It brought hoards of people wanting desperately to believe that flying saucers and the space people were benevolent and would cure the woes of mankind. There was also much money to be made by Contactees promising communication with the space brothers. The major problem with Ufology and the Contactees is that healthy skepticism and investigation took a public back seat to those who believe without being bothered by the facts. Thus, many a snake oil salesman brought their goods to Giant Rock and the proverbial search for the almighty dollar. For those who believe the Contactees, you will enjoy listening to the old Masters. Those who don’t accept the Contactee movement will find a delightful diversion from Ufology’s more serious side.
