Mercury in "Green" light bulbs

Use full spectrum bulbs instead

Even a broken clock
is right twice a day

This normally loathsome Republican from Texas makes a lot of sense on the subject of "energy saver" light bulbs from China.

This is the perfect 21st century scam...

Government mandated and only one country in the world manufactures them: China.

One problem: They are so toxic that you are advised to leave your home if they break!

They are filled with mercury and need to be double-bagged and hand delivered to a specialized recycling enter after they burn out.

Use full spectrum light bulbs instead.

Low-energy light bulbs can cause rashes and swelling to sensitive skin, warn experts
Quote:The phasing out of traditional light bulbs could cause misery for thousands who have light-sensitive skin disorders, medical experts warned yesterday.

Dr Robert Sarkany said some low-energy bulbs gave vulnerable people painful rashes and swelling.

He backed calls by patient groups for the Government to give medical exemptions for those at risk.

The warning comes as British shops start to clear their shelves of traditional bulbs, which are being replaced by more energy-efficient versions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Large retailers have already stopped selling conventional 100-watt bulbs, the most popular size.

They will be banned from September along with frosted 60-watt and 40-watt bulbs, followed by most others before 2012.

Shoppers will then be able to buy only halogen bulbs - which resemble normal bulbs but use 70 per cent of the energy - or compact fluorescent ones, which use just 30 per cent of the energy.

Although low-energy bulbs cut household electricity bills, the move has proved unpopular with shoppers.

Halogens are more expensive - costing around £1.99 each - while critics say the fluorescent type have an unattractive harsh light and take up to a minute to warm up to full strength.

But medical charities say the light from low-energy bulbs triggers migraines, epilepsy and rashes.

Dr Sarkany, a photodermatologist at St John's Institute of Dermatology, St Thomas' Hospital, in London, said he has treated patients for rashes caused by exposure to low-energy lamps.

Some suffer from lupus, a disease of the immune system that can cause skin to become hypersensitive to sunlight.

But Dr Sarkany said lupus sufferers were also reporting an adverse reaction to fluorescent lights.

He added: 'Patients with lupus feel strongly about this. They feel their skin deteriorates with fluorescent lights and have taken this issue to Parliament.'

A spokesman for Skin Care Campaign said: 'The main concern is over the intensity of the ultraviolet light from low-energy bulbs.

'Particularly for people with skin conditions such as lupus, eczema and psoriasis, it causes a lot of problem with burning.

'There are also more unusual conditions where people are completely light-sensitive.

'At the moment, they can use a traditional incandescent light bulb because the ultraviolet light is so dim.

'But low-energy fluorescent lights are a problem.'

As the mandated death of normal light bulbs approaches, you need to know your options

How to Avoid Health Hazards of Lighting

(NaturalNews) As the federally mandated phasing out of incandescent light bulbs approaches, you need to know about your new lighting choices. There are three options, of which one is no good if you value your health and don't enjoy eerie dim lighting. The options are CFLs (compact fluorescent lights/lamps), halogen bulbs, and LEDs (low energy diodes).

They are all energy efficient according to EISA (Energy Independence and Security Act) imposed standards. They cost more than incandescent bulbs, but last longer.

Heavily Promoted CFLs are the Most Unhealthy

Their light quality has improved, but is still not as good as all the other bulbs. The price range is from two dollars U.S to eight dollars. They last longer than incandescent bulbs, but before they expire completely, they begin to fade.

They are filled with mercury, which when broken will fill a room with more toxic vapors than you can safely tolerate. Most of you know that. And the mercury laden CFLs present land fill environmental problems, which means it's a hassle to get rid of them when they do expire. Most of you know that too.

But many do not know of the extreme EMF (electro magnetic frequencies) radiation from the dirty electricity these CFLs produce. The resultant EMF is the same type of radio frequency pollution that we've been warned about from cell phones and towers, portable phones, WiFi computers, and high power wires or high voltage transformers outside your house or office.

Cancer, neurological disorders, diabetic endangering blood sugar spikes and malaise of various types have been associated with EMFs from all these sources. Those sources outside your home tend to be less menacing the farther way they are. But CFLs are meant to be inside. Can you imagine a house full of CFLs? There is no hiding from all that EMF pollution inside your space! (CBC TV demo, source below)

If you're okay with weird lighting and think, as many dentists and vaccination advocates do, that mercury is not a health hazard, then it would be wise to use filters to eliminate the dirty electricity EMF radiation if CFLs are or were your choice. (Dirty Electricity, source below).

Halogen and LED: Two Better Choices

On February 20th, 2010, the The St. Marys Press, a local newspaper in the small town of St. Marys, PA, announced that the local light bulb factory would remain open with the recent development of the halogen light bulb. This factory belongs to a large electronics and lighting company. So these bulbs will be available in the USA and perhaps worldwide.

These are the same types of halogens used in little bright desk lamps or in some types of auto headlights. Instead of being exposed, they are inserted into mercury free glass bulbs exactly resembling incandescent bulbs that can be screwed into any normal light socket. They will cost around the same as CFLs and last as long without the fade factor. Halogens produce a bright, clean white light without any dirty electricity EMFs.

LEDs do not contain mercury, and they do not create EMF dirty electricity. They are the most expensive option. But they can last for 10 to 15 years, often with a two to three year guarantee. LEDs use less electricity than all the other lighting options. Mike Adams calculates the long term savings in this article: http://www.naturalnews.com/021840_L...

The downside of LEDs is that their bright white lighting is not omni-directional. The light just goes where it's pointed. Obviously, for some purposes that's perfect. That CBC TV segment on CLFs' hazards is just below.

Energy saving light bulbs "contain cancer causing chemicals"
By Victoria Ward 7:16AM BST 20 Apr 2011

Fears have been reignited about the safety of energy saving light bulbs after a group of scientists warned that they contain cancer causing chemicals.

Their report advises that the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on.

Peter Braun, who carried out the tests at the Berlin's Alab Laboratory, said: “For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.”

The bulbs are already widely used in the UK following EU direction to phase out traditional incandescent lighting by the end of this year.

But the German scientists claimed that several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins were released when the environmentally-friendly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on, including phenol, naphthalene and styrene.

Andreas Kirchner, of the Federation of German Engineers, said: “Electrical smog develops around these lamps.

“I, therefore, use them only very economically. They should not be used in unventilated areas and definitely not in the proximity of the head.”

British experts insisted that more research was needed and urged consumers not to panic.

Dr Michelle Bloor, senior lecturer in Environmental Science at Portsmouth University, told the Daily Express: “Further independent studies would need to be undertaken to back up the presented German research.”

The Department for the Environment insists the bulbs are safe, despite the fact that they contain small amounts of mercury which would leak out if the glass was broken.

Advice on its website states: “Energy efficient light bulbs are not a danger to the public.

“Although they contain mercury, limited at 5mg per lamp, it cannot escape from a lamp that is intact.

“In any case, the very small amount contained in an energy efficient bulb is unlikely to cause harm even if the lamp should be broken.”

The latest report follows claims by Abraham Haim, a professor of biology at Haifa University in Israel, that the bulbs could result in higher breast cancer rates if used late at night.

He said that the bluer light that CFLs emitted closely mimicked daylight, disrupting the body's production of the hormone melatonin more than older-style filament bulbs, which cast a yellower light.

The Migraine Action Association has warned that they could trigger migraines and skin care specialists have claimed that their intense light could exacerbate a range of existing skin problems.

Lightbulb  RE: 'Green' Light Bulbs Pose Health Risks including Mercury Poisoning and Cancer
Merged with older Green CFL light bulb threads. Glad I didn't get a bunch of this subsidized, Al Gore/Government promoted, and in some cases mandated, toxic garbage installed in my home.

Are LEDs any better though? There are different variations of them but I've heard that they may communicate disruptive signals.

RE: 'Green' Light Bulbs Pose Health Risks including Mercury Poisoning and Cancer
isn't this old news?
i remember this being said a fair few years ago.
and being told that if a bulb was dropped to open a window and call the local council to make sure there were no contaminants left.
dunno about LED solutions being worse.
i have a few LED sdetups in my home and they are very low power and high output.
you can even get growing set ups such as my cousin uses.
(not for weed i might add", he's a botanist and grows all sports all year round)
mind you a quick google search shows manyhits on toxic metals being used.. am quite surprised.
but it seems to be lead(8 times the amoutn allowed under Californian law) used in low intensity red LED's
science daily Wrote:Their findings? Low-intensity red lights contained up to eight times the amount of lead allowed under California law, but in general, high-intensity, brighter bulbs had more contaminants than lower ones. White bulbs contained the least lead, but had high levels of nickel.

"We find the low-intensity red LEDs exhibit significant cancer and noncancer potentials due to the high content of arsenic and lead," the team wrote in the January 2011 issue of Environmental Science & Technology, referring to the holiday lights. Results from the larger lighting products will be published later, but according to Ogunseitan, "it's more of the same."

Lead, arsenic and many additional metals discovered in the bulbs or their related parts have been linked in hundreds of studies to different cancers, neurological damage, kidney disease, hypertension, skin rashes and other illnesses. The copper used in some LEDs also poses an ecological threat to fish, rivers and lakes.

Ogunseitan said that breaking a single light and breathing fumes would not automatically cause cancer, but could be a tipping point on top of chronic exposure to another carcinogen. And -- noting that lead tastes sweet -- he warned that small children could be harmed if they mistake the bright lights for candy.
mistaken for candy? erm...... not so sure about that....

Quote:He cites LEDs as a perfect example of the need to mandate product replacement testing. The diodes are widely hailed as safer than compact fluorescent bulbs, which contain dangerous mercury.
LED's are by far more robust than any glass tube/bulb.
