We wish to show, and make perfectly clear, a fact about the pentacle and its history. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

That it was used in Greece during antiquity is commonly known and agreed upon. Few, however, make mention of the fact that it was always made with two points up! <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

What is worse, many of those who know exactly what the Pythagorean Pentagram actually was and is deny it to others and, to make it even worse than worse, when such people are then presented with the visual and ancient proof - they admit it and say that this shouldn't be told to others! Why not? <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

This star positioning is clearly shown in the Eastern Star used today by Freemasons, some of whom claim their tradition is Pythagorean. This fact was elaborated upon in Western Roots Part One, which explains Pythagoreanism and clearly separates Plato from Socrates and shows the clear distinction between the two of them. People "into" Pythagoreanism today, the worst of them fake teachers of this esoteric system, usually claim the pentacle was one point up with a male image inside the star and claim that the pentacle represented Mars, Venus, Sun, etc. Some of them claim that the symbol only represents the "four elements plus spirit," a magical system that is medieval. They lie. That is a bold-faced lie told out of either complete ignorance or the determined desire to cover up esoteric traditions! <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

Absolutely nothing supports their claims. The true Pythagorean pentacle was (and is) two points up and was considered a Pentagrammon - a house in the center, a pentagon (pentagonas) representing the Self, and the five points or blazing angles (pentalpha) represented the Pentemychos - inside the angles, and outside of them - every single line has meaning in this Master Glyph and none of it, not one bit of it, was medieval stupidity. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

Our statements have support in the coins these ancient people made themselves and in other images that are not modern at all or part of some "modern occult system" out there today. It is also confirmed by Agrippa as will be shown below with an actual image. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

Here below are seven different designs of ancient Greek coins with pentagrams on them: every one of them is two points up. There are also many different variations of coins of each design. Photos of seven coin designs are shown below. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

One researcher in old coins writes about the coin that is shown first as "Coin One" that: "The extraordinary variety of the types, and the fact that no specimens have been found outside Melos, lead us to suppose that their circulation was mainly local, and that they represent successive issues probably struck on the occasions of recurrent religious festivals, chiefly perhaps connected with the worship of the Phoenician Kabeiri, of the Libyan Ammon (cf. the Rams' heads and the Pentagram, his symbol on coins of Pitane, supra, p. 537), and of Aristaeos (Grapes, corn-grains, stars, etc.); cf. Cyrene, p. 865." -<!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

So, the pentagram was also a symbol of the Ammon, which is Pan.<!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

Finally, for the final proof that this knowledge was still around in the 1500s to some extent: Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (a theologian, physicisn and legal expert) had a drawing of a two points up pentacle where he informed the reader it is "Pythagorean," in his Occult Philosophy, first published in 1533 AD. He had other drawings, too, of pentacles one point up with a man inside, with astrological symbols. But for the two point up pentacle, he specifically informs us that he knew it was Pythagorean. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

This below is a scan of the symbol from the actual 1533 AD edition. The image shows a pentacle inside of two circles. Between the circles, but not at the points of the pentagram, are what Agrippa sees as the five beginning letters of "elements." The letters on the image are not all too clear to see, but starting at the top point and reading them clockwise the letters are "upsilon," "gamma," "iota," "epsilon and iota," and "alpha." The "elemental scheme" was typical of medieval thinkers and even found in some earlier exoteric teachings. However, the letters actually spell UGIEIA (often rendered Hygieia), which means HEALTH (John Burnet, Early Greek Philosophy, 1948, page 295). The Pythagorean pentacle was absolutely a symbol Health seen altogether in all its complex meaning. Agrippa, and others, recognized the letters as being the five beginning letters of the words: udor (water, often transliterated as hydor), ge (earth, Agrippa used gaia), idea (idea as in The Platonic Idea), eile (sometimes written as heile, heat, it meant that in the Greek known to Agrippa), and aer (air). However, note that even if one uses the "elemental" scheme that Agrippa used, it's a definite stretch because it uses heat (heile), which is not an element but a quality OF the element fire. Had Agrippa used the Attic Greek, which is the language Pythagoreans back then actually spoke and wrote, he could have used (phonetic) "empreesis" for fire or conflagration. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

The Ugieia, Health, is ancient Pythagoreanism. "The pentagram has always been prominent in magic and apparently owes its position to the Pythagoreans, who called it "Health," and used it as a symbol of recognition of members of the brotherhood. It seems that it owed its properties to the fact that the dodecahedron has pentagons for its faces and is in some sense a symbol of the universe." (TL Heath, A History of Greek Mathematics, Oxford, 1921, Volume 1, pages 159, 162, 294-6. Bertrand Russell, A History of Western Philosophy, 1945, page 147.) <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

In the image below, the notion of Health that is within and inside a living being, is "bounded between the rings" (kyklos/space and binding force/Demiurge/foundation), and even if seen as the medieval elements, Living Things are the things traveling the Wheel of Life, and not directly connected or part of the Pythagorean pentagram itself, which is at their core in the center, a Core of Inner Being. When one had Health, they were considered Zoös and in their hearts there was Eros (the word did not mean "erotic" in the sense we mean it today at all). To not have Health was to be Thanatos - a word that does not exactly mean dead as in "dead and buried," but means dead inside but alive, like a shell. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

This is an esoteric connection, but note that the Core is the Greek Goddess Kore (another name for Persephone, alongside Hecate queen of the underworld), whose symbol was the apple. If you cut an apple transversally through its core, it reveals a pentagram. The apple is also still, despite Christian ideas over the years, a symbol of health! (An apple a day keeps the doctor away!)<!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

In the play Medea by Euripides, the sorceress Medea calls upon Hecate with the words, "By that dread queen whom I revere before all others and have chosen to share my task, by Hecate who dwells within my inmost chamber, not one of them shall wound my heart and rue it not." Note that she speaks of the Heart. The inmost chamber is the Mychos. Normally, Hecate and Persephone are portrayed as just being the rulers of the Underworld, however, Hecate is called the Lady of Tartaros, Phulada (Guardian), Propulaia (Before the Gates), Kleidophoros (Key-bearer) and Kleidoukhos (Key-holder, Priestess) - but this Underworld of the Greeks and Pythagoreans is also the "inmost chamber" and the Core of Inner Being.<!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

Pentemychos was the title of a work written by Pythagoras' teacher and friend Pherecydes. Pentemychos means five "recesses" or "chambers" also known as the pentagonas - the five-angle. (This is actually a lost book whose contents are preserved in Damascius de principiis, quoted in Kirk and Raven, The Pre-Socratic Philosophers, Cambridge Univ. Press, 1956, page 55). It was also the "place" where the first pre-cosmic offspring had to be put in order for the ordered cosmos to appear. The pentemychos is in Tartaros. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

Tartaros was also later seen as the "chthonic realm" where all the enemies of the cosmic order were locked away, also called the "prison-house" of Zeus. It was said to lay outside of the aither over which Zeus had lordship; what we today would call space, back then called "Zeus' defense-wall," yet it was also beneath the earth. Plato (in Cratylus) said that the aither had a penetrating power that permeats the whole world, and he found it both inside and outside of our bodies. Plato was a Pythagorean. The pentemychos is outside, or in-side, of the aither, and hence the pentemychos, too, permeates everything.<!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

However, in very early Greek thought, Tartaros was the first existing Darkness from which the cosmos is born. While it was locked away after the emergence and ordering of the cosmos, it still continued to have an influence. In fact, it was known as "the subduer of both gods and men" (Homer), and it was from this that the world got its "psyche" (soul) and its "daimon." The Boundless Darkness held influence through Mychos or Krater. Apart from being the gateway from "there" to "here" it was also a way in the opposite direction, from "here" to "there", as is evident in the many tales about how Greek heroes, philosophers and mystics descended to Tartaros/Hades (the distinction between the two was very optional back then) in quest for Wisdom. The Underworld as the source of wisdom was the rule. Additional information on pre-cosmic ideas is in information on the Pythagorean APEIRON. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

The much older SUMERIAN pentagrams served as pictograms for the word UB; meaning "corner, angle, nook; a small room, cavity, hole; pitfall," suggesting something very similar to the pentemychos. In the Labat (dictionary of Sumerian hieroglyphs/pictograms) it is the number 306, and it is shown as two points up.<!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

It's not all too clear where the notion of a one-point up star with a man inside it came from, but it might be a Christian confusion or distortion from Angeology or Demonology. It is a confusion or outright lie that has been carried forth to the present day. The popular explanation for such a symbol passes itself off as "white light" type religion - and for some reason the deeper mysteries contained in the glyph that was the actual pentacle, two-points up with the "house" the proper way at the center, is kept secret. Even among those that know about Pythagoreanism and admit it when presented with a few facts, there are some that tend to not want others to find out what any of it means. There are quite a few websites out there pronouncing on the math contained in the pentacle, all showing the pentacle upside-down (that is, one point up!)- but this glyph was much more than just a mathematical symbol. <!--fontc--><!--/fontc-->

'wiseacring' aka revision by logic-lovers and system theoreticians to create a presentable system one can use for mystery religions and other wellness products, be it the pentagram, the enneagram or any other geometric shape perverted for altar-building ritualistic purposes.
facing up or down really doesn't mean anything, more the resonance of the symbol aiding the impotent magick-users who always rely on external aids and the effects on those brain-washed(i.e. hysterical christians or other superstitious victims) who are to be put under the spell of bondage.

Hello everyone, I might be able to shed some light on this topic for you guys...The lines in the palm of my hand make the formation of a pentacle, and considering how often throughout history that symbol pops up. That just may mean IT is rael and ya way IT is back in the flesh and ready to play...

Should consideration not be put into the validity of the fact that reincarnation was changed by Christianity in order to start this whole conspiracy mabus riddle, also taking into account for the fact that this pentacle is tied into a lot of it, and now there is me with a natural pentacle in my hands palm lines. Is that not enough to make you wonder "if I am tied into this/may be the answer to the riddle/or just another silly coincidence", who knows lol!!! Let me know what you think and feel free to doubt me, as I am used to it lol!!!

For the record though, the lines do connect, you just can't clearly make it out from the get the idea though!!!

I have the Eye of Horus on both palms. I thought that was kind of interesting.

I also have the letter "A"... and an "M"... or "W" depending on orientation.

So my third eye is opening and I am the Anti-George W...but I knew that already.

The Monad is the Seed,
the Dyad imparts Change to it,
the Pentad gives it Life,
and the Decad Completes and Contains it.
These Numbers form a Geometric Progression, for as the Seed is to Change, so is Life to the Whole (1:2 :: 5:10);
and as the Seed is to Life, so is Change to the Whole (1:5 :: 2:10).

The Pythagoreans name the Pentad "Alteration," for it creates a Novel Situation, for better or worse; indeed it is often initially worse, but ultimately better. For the Pentad is a Breakdown; it destabilizes the Stasis (and Complaisance) of the Tetrad, and confronts it with a Problem - or Opportunity. As the Tetrad is the Principle of Orderly Linear and Cyclic Change, so is the Pentad the Principle of Unpredictable, Creative Nonlinear Change.

The Pythagoreans also call the Pentad "Aphrodite," for this Goddess has the power to disrupt the normal Order of Things, whether among Gods or Mortals. Thus when Hera must alter Zeus's decisions for the World, She borrows Aphrodite's Girdle, and then Her Wishes cannot be denied. Likewise an agent of the Unexpected and Unintended is the Planet Mercury and the God Hermes, who is called the Trickster. He is the Psychagogos (Spirit Guide), who leads Souls out of the Mundane Realm into the Unseen Realm (A-ides = Hades), the Patron of all Boundary-Crossers.

In the Fifth Cosmological Stage the normal Order of the Universe is temporarily disrupted (with permanent effects). Thus in the Babylonian Epic of Erra, Four-square Marduk, grown old and complaisant, is temporarily driven from His throne by Erra (Nergal), a violent God, known for bringing crises, such as forest fires, fevers and plagues. So He wreaks havoc on the World for no other purpose than the Chaos it engenders.

Its attributes are as follows: It is called mind, because the mind is stable and has preeminence; hermaphrodism, because it is both male and female; odd and even, for being added to the even it makes odd, and to the odd, even; God, because it is the beginning and end of all, but itself has neither beginning nor end; good, for such is the nature of God; the receptacle of matter, because it produces the duad, which is essentially material.

By the Pythagoreans monad was called chaos, obscurity, chasm, Tartarus, Styx, abyss, Lethe, Atlas, Axis, Morpho (a name for Venus), and Tower or Throne of Jupiter, because of the great power which abides in the center of the universe and controls the circular motion of the planers about itself. Monad is also called germinal reason, because it is the origin of all the thoughts in the universe. Other names given to it were: Apollo, because of its relation to the sun; Prometheus, because he brought man light; Pyralios, one who exists in fire; geniture, because without it no number can exist; substance, because substance is primary; cause of truth; and constitution of symphony: all these because it is the primordial one.

Between greater and lesser the monad is equal; between intention and remission it is middle; in multitude it is mean; and in time it is now, because

eternity knows neither past nor future. It is called Jupiter, because he is Father and head of the gods; Vesta, the fire of the home, because it is located in the midst of the universe and remains there inclining to no side as a dot in a circle; form, because it circumscribes, comprehends, and terminates; love, concord, and piety, because it is indivisible. Other symbolic names for the monad are ship, chariot, Proteus (a god capable of changing his form), Mnemosyne, and Polyonymous (having many names).

Duad -2-
The following symbolic names were given to the duad--2--because it has been divided, and is two rather than one; and when there are two, each is opposed to the other: genius, evil, darkness, inequality, instability, movability, boldness, fortitude, contention, matter, dissimilarity, partition between multitude and monad, defect, shapelessness, indefiniteness, indeterminate ness, harmony, tolerance, root, feet of fountain-abounding idea, top, Phanes, opinion, fallacy, alterity, diffidence, impulse, death, motion, generation, mutation, division, longitude, augmentation, composition, communion, misfortune, sustentation, imposition, marriage, soul, and science.

In his book, Numbers, W. Wynn Westcott says of the duad: "it was called 'Audacity,' from its being the earliest number to separate itself from the Divine One; from the 'Adytum of God-nourished Silence,' as the Chaldean oracles say."

As the monad is the father, so the duad is the mother; therefore, the duad has certain points in common with the goddesses Isis, Rhea (Jove's mother), Phrygia, Lydia, Dindymene (Cybele), and Ceres; Erato (one of the Muses); Diana, because the moon is forked; Dictynna, Venus, Dione, Cytherea; Juno, because she is both wife and sister of Jupiter; and Maia, the mother of Mercury.

While the monad is the symbol of wisdom, the duad is the symbol of ignorance, for in it exists the sense of separateness--which sense is the beginning of ignorance. The duad, however, is also the mother of wisdom, for ignorance--out of the nature of itself--invariably gives birth to wisdom.

The Pythagoreans revered the monad but despised the duad, because it was the symbol of polarity. By the power of the duad the deep was created in contradistinction to the heavens. The deep mirrored the heavens and became the symbol of illusion, for the below was merely a reflection of the above. The below was called maya, the illusion, the sea, the Great Void, and to symbolize it the Magi of Persia carried mirrors. From the duad arose disputes and contentions, until by bringing the monad between the duad, equilibrium was reestablished by the Savior-God, who took upon Himself the form of a number and was crucified between two thieves for the sins of men.

The triad--3--
is the first number actually odd (monad not always being considered a number). It is the first equilibrium of unities; therefore, Pythagoras said that Apollo gave oracles from a tripod, and advised offer of libation three times. The keywords to the qualities of the triad are friendship, peace, justice, prudence, piety, temperance, and virtue. The following deities partake of the principles of the triad: Saturn (ruler of time), Latona, Cornucopiæ, Ophion (the great serpent), Thetis, Hecate, Polyhymnia (a Muse), Pluto, Triton, President of the Sea, Tritogenia, Achelous, and the Faces, Furies, and Graces. This number is called wisdom, because men organize the present, foresee the future, and benefit by the experiences of the fast. It is cause of wisdom and understanding. The triad is the number of knowledge--music, geometry, and astronomy, and the science of the celestials and terrestrials. Pythagoras taught that the cube of this number had the power of the lunar circle.

The sacredness of the triad and its symbol--the triangle--is derived from the fact that it is made up of the monad and the duad. The monad is the symbol of the Divine Father and the duad of the Great Mother. The triad being made of these two is therefore androgynous and is symbolic of the fact that God gave birth to His worlds out of Himself, who in His creative aspect is always symbolized by the triangle. The monad passing into the duad was thus capable of becoming the parent of progeny, for the duad was the womb of Meru, within which the world was incubated and within which it still exists in embryo.

The tetrad--4--was esteemed by the Pythagoreans as the primogenial number, the root of all things, the fountain of Nature and the most perfect number. All tetrads are intellectual; they have an emergent order and encircle the world as the Empyreum passes through it. Why the Pythagoreans expressed God as a tetrad is explained in a sacred discourse ascribed to Pythagoras, wherein God is called the Number of Numbers. This is because the decad, or 10, is composed of 1, 2, 3, and 4. The number 4 is symbolic of God because it is symbolic of the first four numbers. Moreover, the tetrad is the center of the week, being halfway between 1 and 7. The tetrad is also the first geometric solid.

Pythagoras maintained that the soul of man consists of a tetrad, the four powers of the soul being mind, science, opinion, and sense. The tetrad connects all beings, elements, numbers, and seasons; nor can anything be named which does not depend upon the tetractys. It is the Cause and Maker of all things, the intelligible God, Author of celestial and sensible good, Plutarch interprets this tetractys, which he said was also called the world, to be 36, consisting of the first four odd numbers added to the first four even numbers, thus:

1 + 3 +5 +7
= 16

2 + 4 + 6 + 8
= 20


Keywords given to the tetrad are impetuosity, strength, virility, two-mothered, and the key keeper of Nature, because the universal constitution cannot be without it. It is also called harmony and the first profundity. The following deities partook of the nature of the tetrad: Hercules, Mercury, Vulcan, Bacchus, and Urania (one of the Muses).

The triad represents the primary colors and the major planets, while the tetrad represents the secondary colors and the minor planets. From the first triangle come forth the seven spirits, symbolized by a triangle and a square. These together form the Masonic apron.

The pentad--5--is the union of an odd and an even number (3 and 2). Among the Greeks, the pentagram was a sacred symbol of light, health, and vitality. It also symbolized the fifth element--ether--because it is free from the disturbances of the four lower elements. It is called equilibrium, because it divides the perfect number 10 into two equal parts.

The pentad is symbolic of Nature, for, when multiplied by itself it returns into itself, just as grains of wheat, starting in the form of seed, pass through Nature's processes and reproduce the seed of the wheat as the ultimate form of their own growth. Other numbers multiplied by themselves produce other numbers, but only 5 and 6 multiplied by themselves represent and retain their original number as the last figure in their products.

The pentad represents all the superior and inferior beings. It is sometimes referred to as the hierophant, or the priest of the Mysteries, because of its connection with the spiritual ethers, by means of which mystic development is attained. Keywords of the pentad are reconciliation, alternation, marriage, immortality, cordiality, Providence, and sound. Among the deities who partook of the nature of the pentad were Pallas, Nemesis, Bubastia (Bast), Venus, Androgynia, Cytherea, and the messengers of Jupiter.

So there does seem to be an interesting connection between what some say is a conspiracy, the pentacle, Venus and me, a Taurus with a pentacle... Don't worry though I am not the antichrist, nor am I special. I just happen to be the one who can level the playing field though...of course I would need some help in doing so!!!

What Anaximander did was to put forth a rationalized version and understanding of the mythological cosmology. That the doctrine presented here as theoria, about how an egg is conceived in the Darkness and then is hatched with the result of the arranged cosmos, offers a good background for a very reasonable (and correct!) understanding of how the cosmos came to be is evident. When Anaximander instead of the mythical words Dark and Light uses apeiron and peiron, the whole thing seems even more "on target." Aristotle sheds more light on the ideas contained in this when he comments how:

"…of the infinite there is no beginning… but this seems to be the beginning of the other things, and to enfold all things and steer all […] And this is the divine; for it is immortal and indestructible, as Anaximander says and most of the physical speculators." –Aristotle.

Apeiron is what defines the peiron. The influence of the apeiron initiates a ceaseless dialectical motion of opposites according to Anaximander, a thought that was carried on by Heraclitus and in modern days formulated as dialectical materialism. Pythagoras was inspired by this idea but formulated it in another way; the teaching about how everything in the world is determined by, and preserved in, precise mathematical attunements. This was what really set Pythagoras apart. Aristotle explains how the Pythagoreans developed Anaximander’s ideas by writing that:

"… for they [the Pythagoreans] plainly say that when the one had been constructed, whether out of planes or of surface or of seed or of elements which they cannot express, immediately the nearest part of the unlimited began to be drawn in and limited by the limit." –Aristotle.

"The Pythagoreans, too, held that void exists, and that it enters the heaven from the unlimited breath – it, so to speak, breathes in void. The void distinguishes the natures of things, since it is the thing that separates and distinguishes the successive terms in a series. This happens in the first case of numbers; for the void distinguishes their nature." –Aristotle.

And Strobaues in his turn about what Aristotle wrote about the Pythagoreans in his now lost book about them:

"In the first book of his work On the Philosophy of Pythagoras he writes that the universe is one, and that from the unlimited there are drawn into it time, breath and the void, which always distinguishes the places of each thing." -Strobaeus.

The apeiron is "inhaled," just in the same way as the Darkness through krater. Apeiron is the Darkness/Night/Tartaros, apeiron is a Dark force that permeates, motivates and steers all of nature. It is because of this that time and change exists - today we might say that the apeiron is the guarantor behind the law of increasing entropy. The idea is that without this Dark apeiron-force there would only be a continuum (syneches), a static undifferentiated whole.

The modern parallel is the big-bang theory. First was a perfectly symmetrical singularity. With that it is not meant "a small cosmic pie of incredible density floating somewhere in the middle of space." By the perfect symmetry of the big-bang it is meant an undifferentiated whole; where neither space, time nor matter can be singled out. The Pythagorean thought is that if the apeiron had not been inhaled by the peiron-type firstborn one (the egg in mythology) immediately after it had been conceived (see Strobaues above), the world would have remained like that; an undifferentiated continuum without separation in "time and space." Might it be that science with its recent discoveries about the mysterious "dark energy" that is blowing space-time up like a bubble is catching up with the ancient Pythagorean?
