Britain faces threat from radicalised Muslims for 30 years, says security minister
Quote:Britain will face a threat from radicalised young Muslims for another 30 years, the Security Minister Lord West has said.

Lord West warned that it will take decades to win the argument against terrorism and extremism in some sections of British society.

"To stop this radicalisation of extremists is going to take about 30 years," the minister told MPs on the Commons Defence Committee.

He added that no matter how much work the Government puts into improving Britain's ability to detect and thwart terrorist plots, the threat will only be overcome by persuading Muslims not to engage in violence.

"We cannot arrest and protect our way out of this problem," Lord West said.

The minister insisted that the Government's attempts to begin a dialogue with young British Muslims is starting to pay off, but accepted that there is still a long way to go.

He said: "I regularly go out and talk to youngsters and I think. 'It's amazing, how on earth can you believe that?' But we have to have a dialogue."

Tacitly accepting that the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have contributed to radicalisation, he said: "We would accept that certain aspects of our foreign policy have caused difficulty with them."

Lord West was giving evidence as the committee investigates Britain's defences against terrorism.

The minister also disclosed his concerns about the monitoring of Britain's coastline by the Royal Navy and other authorities.

There are only six navy ships permanently assigned to patrol the 11,000 miles of the British coast, the committee heard.

Lord West, a former admiral, said that there is no way for the UK authorities to track every vessel entering British waters.

"We are not able to monitor all traffic in our waters. It is not what I would call, ultimately, satisfactory," he said.

"When you look into the sky, generally, we pretty well know what is moving. We don't know that around our waters.

"I think it would be quite a good thing to have a very good picture of what is moving around our coast."

James Arbuthnot, the Tory chair of the defence committee, said he was listening the minister's answers "with increasing horror."

Other committee members also expressed worries that the management of Britain's national security apparatus remains fragmented between several ministers, officials and Whitehall departments.

Lord West said that Gordon Brown is still considering appointing a single Cabinet minister for national security. "We haven't come to a final decision," he said.

To help speed things along, any caught in this sort of activity should be deported, along with all their family and friends. I think the problem would be solved in a much shorter time then.
