Robin Williams kills himself
While I have a lot of respect for the man, I have absolutely no respect for the act of suicide.

Quote:Do not go gentle into that good night
Dylan Thomas, 1914 - 1953

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Amusingly, I'm the exact opposite. I somewhat disliked Robin Williams, and believe suicide is a good option for some people.

As a kid in the 70's I was a huge Mork 'n' Mindy fan. I bought all Williams' comedy albums and memorized the routines. Somehow in the late 80's I got tired of him, and began to avoid his movies.

When I was young, I self-righteous proclaimed "Suicide is for cowards; a permanent solution to a temporary problem".

When I got older I had friends whose lives deteriorated into unending days of permanent suffering from medical problems you cannot appreciate until you help them bathe and witness their pain. For them, suicide is sometimes better then life.

Don't judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes.

I should make my position more clear. I believe that others should have the right to decide when they should kill themselves. "Live and let live" (or die). I just believe that in the vast majority of circumstances, it's not a good decision.

Chronic, extreme, physical pain which cannot be alleviated, would be one instance where I believe suicide would be an understandable "cure". Certainly someone who's quality of life has deteriorated to the point where they are basically a vegetable would be another instance.

As I said, I've judged Robin to be a great man, I just don't like his decision to top himself. He had no physical pain AFAIK. He has suffered bouts of depression for decades. What made him decide to do it now? Did it have something to do with him checking into rehab last month? Was he prescribed an SSRI, which so few people know causes suicidal ideation, especially when one starts the regimen?

My bet is that's what happened - he's yet another SSRI suicide. If so, of course it's not Robin's fault...
