News articles down the memory hole

News articles down the memory hole
I've noticed after many years of bookmarking significant news articles, there is a large number which come up, "Error 404 - Page not found".

It's virtually impossible to use the internet archive wayback machine: if you only remember the title of the article and don't have the direct link bookmarked. Therefore, you have to rely on the news article being reported on by a separate source to be able to get the direct link.

I've now taken to capturing the article within the webpage with different programs.

Do mainstream news sources not have a legal responsibility to archive articles they write, especially opinion pieces which push for cultural change, which ultimately means they can ram through social changes with the media, then delete the articles like they never existed...

With print in newspapers this wasn't possible before, but now with most people getting their news and ideas from the internet, isn't this a very dangerous trend that needs to be discussed? I'm not suggesting these particular articles are singled out to be deleted from the web to make room for webspace, but that it's all old articles. But I don't know that for certain either, because I have an opinion piece from a news site I saved in Microsoft Word and I just tried to search for it on the web in a lot of different ways and it's gone and the date it was written was June 2013, so it hasn't even been 1 year and it's down the memory hole.

For example:

The Jerusalem Post reported in 2010 this article which I had bookmarked:

It is now down the memory hole with "Error 404 - Page not found".

Using you are able to see what they originally posted:

It's about Israeli's Ben-Gurion airport using the first biometric system and there is a nice little gem in the article: "The IAA said the timing of the biometric security program's launch, amid heightened international air travel security following the Al-Qaeda terrorist plot to blow up a US airliner over Detroit last month, was purely coincidental." lmao

They do not.

This is a phenomena I have wondered about. In the olden days I could go to a university library and view exact copies of old newspaper articles from 100 years ago on a microfiche machine.

Today most people do not even know that machine still exists.

I suspect 1,000 years from now anthropologists will consider the period 1997 - 2047 a fifty year "Dark Age" of which nothing can be known with certainty due to the fact that the media was so fluid and changeable.
