re - The Truth About Your Dog's Food
Sorry about posting the torrent request in the wrong section easy,
thanks for moving it.

I maybe have the chance / have been offered a german shepherd pup.
My wife is very keen on it ,although i have limited experience with dogs
as pets ,my wife grew up with 3 dogs as pets.

Anyway i better stop rambling and get to the point. Two cats we have had so far have been fed on standard store purchased pet food, and they were quite ill from time to time and some brands of food they would just walk away from and refuse to eat.

So searching about online for info on german shepherds i came across dog diet advice, which on the whole looks like sound advice.Only problem
is i have no idea where i could purchase the the stuff they use in the UK.

e.g

Any dog owners here using natural food for dogs or pets, especially anyone in the UK that could point me to where i could get such stuff.

And are your pets healthier ?

Thanks.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. I did not know this.

My understanding is that "waste" parts from slaughterhouses is more difficult to acquire than in the past because modern techniques allow every part of the animal to be rendered into a salable commodity.

My Italian friend who is a chef is only able to find real, raw soup stock bones at "ethnic" markets. Where I live that means Mexican.

Jewish/Arab butchers must process animals in a certain way to ensure they are kosher/halal. Check with those shops for real animal parts.

Excellent topic drummer !!

I'm thrilled to hear about the baby german shepherd that might be joining your family !!

My boy is half white shepherd and half labrador (Pan.) He had relations with a female who was half pit bull and half rottweiler….. and he made a rottweiler with a white chest….. so we have a rottweiler also, (Roofus.)

I didn't start feeding them raw right off the bat…. started maybe 3 years ago. The changes in their health since switching to raw have been incredible.

A book I'd highly recommend is called "Raw & Natural Nutrition for Dogs" by Lew Olson. The book is amazing…. talks about the history of dog food….. why feeding them kibble is ridiculous….. how the ancestors of all dogs are wolves, and why they should eat like wolves… because it's exactly what they would do in nature. The book also has a fantastic chapter devoted to remedies. If your dog is having specific issues… just look it up in the remedies section, and you'll have your answer.

Pan…. my shepherd, used to get frequent ear infections. The vet had convinced us that it was normal, and sold us a bunch of junk to clean his ears. The inside of his ears would turn bright pink from the inflammation…. and the rest of his skin, like his belly, would quickly turn bright pink also. That was when I decided to look into dog diets… and the raw method. Pan has NEVER had an ear infection since !! His ears and skin stay a light normal color, and he has no other health issues whatsoever.

I haven't been able to get my hands on any green tripe unfortunately…. but their weekly diets consist of about 80% raw meat, and 20% vegetables. A pound and a half… twice a day. If you feed them the same kind of meat constantly…. they will quickly get skin allergies…. so you have to mix up the varieties…. and make sure to have organ meats along with the lean and fatty meats…. plus raw bones.

My boys eat chicken, beef, pork, beef hearts, turkey, liver, gizzards, mackerel, eggs, and lamb with broccoli, carrots, cabbage, lettuce and celery. I get their meat at a local butcher shop, and at the same grocery store where I get most of our food.

Pan was the first dog Daniel and I both ever owned. We didn't know anything really about training and maintaining dogs prior to him. We discovered a television show called "The Dog Whisperer" featuring this guy named Cesar Millan. All of the episodes can be found online…. and the man is brilliant. As far as training and understanding dog behavior…. there isn't anything he doesn't cover. Go watch his stuff and you will learn and understand everything you need to know.

German Shepherds are "working dogs" … so keep in mind that they will easily get bored if you're not making them use their brain, or walking them daily.

Holler if you ever have questions about anything drummer.

Pan and Roofus have, without any doubt, been the highlight of the last 6 years of my life.

Some photos of our beasts… Ok
