The Ganzfeld Effect
From Wikipedia.

The ganzfeld effect (from German for “complete field”) or perceptual deprivation, is a phenomenon of perception caused by exposure to an unstructured, uniform stimulation field.

It has been most studied with vision by staring at an undifferentiated and uniform field of colour.

The visual effect is described as the loss of vision as the brain cuts off the unchanging signal from the eyes. The result is "seeing black" apparent blindness.

It can also elicit hallucinatory percepts in many people, in addition to an altered state of consciousness.A flickering ganzfeld causes geometrical patterns and colors to appear.

Ganzfeld induction in multiple senses is called multi-modal ganzfeld. This is usually done by wearing ganzfeld goggles in addition to headphones with a uniform stimulus.

A related effect is sensory deprivation. With sensory deprivation, however, a stimulus is minimized rather than unstructured. Ganzfeld is thus perceptual deprivation.

Hallucinations that appear under prolonged sensory deprivation are similar to elementary percepts caused by luminous ganzfeld, these include transient sensations of light flashes or colours.

Hallucinations caused by sensory deprivation can, like ganzfeld-induced hallucinations, turn into complex scenes.

In the 1930s, research by psychologist Wolfgang Metzger established that when subjects gazed into a featureless field of vision they consistently hallucinated and their electroencephalograms changed.

The Ganzfeld effect is the result of the brain amplifying neural noise in order to look for the missing visual signals. The noise is interpreted in the higher visual cortex, and gives rise to hallucinations.

This may occur as a result of the sensory deprivation of sleep to produce dreams or in a loss of vision due to a traumatic event, such as would lead to the sights reported in near death experiences.

The Ganzfeld effect has been reported since ancient times. The adepts of Pythagoras retreated to pitch black caves to receive wisdom through their visions, known as the prisoner's cinema.

Miners trapped by accidents in mines frequently reported hallucinations, visions and seeing ghosts when they were in the pitch dark for days.

Arctic explorers seeing nothing but featureless landscape of white snow for a long time also reported hallucinations and an altered state of mind.

I would like to try this, but I'm afraid I might pass out and my wife would find me and be angry. Smile

I suspect meditation may have similar effects. Same for drugs such at DMT and others.

And as for boredom, it's a blessing! Being in a state of boredom, being "in the moon" (as we say in french culture (dans la lune)) means that you have lost your rational thinking patterns, and therefore open to other conscious influences. Be grateful for them boring school lectures; they open your mind for other things...

The point being: it is wise to find techniques that will free your intellect to the profit of your intuitive consciousness. In other words, you gain by exploring other forms of "knowing yourself and environment".

Science and logic are good, but can enslave our higher beings.

Take note of that!

Agreed here. It's good to maintain a footing in, as shamans would say, both worlds. Be grounded and ungrounded; balance the two states.

Or more if that suits one's fancy. I've found it helps to switch the mindset every so often for a fresh perspective. One can learn considerably more by unlocking from the regular ol' humdrum point of view.
Truth appears in many forms. Find those that resonate with you.
