Video  Affluenza

British psychologist Oliver James asserts that there is a correlation between the increasing nature of affluenza and the resulting increase in material inequality: the more unequal a society, the greater the unhappiness of its citizens.

Referring to Vance Packard's thesis The Hidden Persuaders on the manipulative methods used by the advertising industry, James relates the stimulation of artificial needs to the rise in affluenza.

James also believes that higher rates of mental disorders are the consequence of excessive wealth-seeking in consumerist nations.

As a legal defense - In December 2013, State District Judge Jean Boyd sentenced a North Texas teenager, Ethan Couch to 10 years probation for drunk driving and killing four pedestrians and injuring 1 after his attorneys successfully argued that the teen suffered from affluenza and needed rehabilitation, and not prison.

The defendant was witnessed on surveillance video stealing beer from a store, driving with seven passengers in his father's Ford F-350, speeding (70 MPH in a 40 MPH zone), and had a blood alcohol content of 0.24, three times the legal limit for an adult in Texas, when he was tested 3 hours after the accident.

Traces of Valium were also in his system. G. Dick Miller, a psychologist hired as an expert by the defense, testified in court that the teen was a product of affluenza and was unable to link his bad behavior with consequences due to his parents teaching him that wealth buys privilege.

The rehabilitation facility near Newport Beach, California that the teen will be attending will cost his family $450,000.00 annually.

But I'd like to add a few comments.

Quote:British psychologist Oliver James asserts that there is a correlation between the increasing nature of affluenza and the resulting increase in material inequality: the more unequal a society, the greater the unhappiness of its citizens.

Followed to its logical conclusion, returning to nature remedies this although it is important to add equality can never be achieved; some will have more than others. How can equality be gained when one is very smart and another is very dumb? Everybody can't be smart, but you can drag the smart down to a level of stupidity that is ok because it makes everything equal. That dynamic is actually what we are seeing in action, dumbing down society as part of this equality/collectivist mindset creating at best mediocrity.

Packard also wrote a book called The Status Seekers. Status or feeding one's primitive egotistic emotions are not artificially created, rather they have heavy influence from social demands and parenting styles. Status elevation is what gets the slaves to work so the masses willingly give up their freedom to gain status symbols. The heart of that is in human biology and genetics - the drive towards increasing the quality of offspring as well as genetic survival; those who do not participate in the system are unlikely to gain mating opportunities.

Now we break down reality on this site but quite frankly taboo subjects still remain and a key one is the myth of the fairer sex. Female hypergamy pretty much dictates to males what is acceptable for those mating opportunities. Men follow women but women follow social rulers. Consumerism is driven more by females than males. Females spend more and are much more concerned with their social perception, including the perceived social perception of their mates. Of course the male equivalent exists by viewing the female as a trophy/object/evidence of social worth but a key reason why consumerism works to control humans is because humans have this natural drive towards status elevation.

I would say an extreme amount of the causes of depression lie in this persuit of status elevation, not necessarily in an inability to obtain certain products. Status elevation remains within the realm of primitive and immature narcissistic emotions and the conspiracy is to keep us locked in that state.
