Did a couple of times just for fun decades ago (though went for .COM instead since header information for relocatable EXE files took longer), but it was easier to fire up TP4 and throw up some inline instead.

Now, coding up an ASM loader under Commie BASIC without crafting the ML on paper first - THAT was a blast.

I believe this topic may be digressing. It will take the power of a godlike to restrain our enthusiasm, me thinks!

Out of curiosity, how did you do an ASCII 007 character from the command line ? Suspicious

Not sure if it still works under the newer Windows command line prompts, but under MSDOS one would hold down the ALT key and punch in the decimal ASCII code via numeric keypad, and release ALT. So ALT-7 would produce an audible beep, of course. ASCII ran from 0 (NUL) to 255 (a space-like character under IBM ASCII, prevalent at the time).

High ASCII was a lot of fun to play with, with all the single/double borders and what-not. Brings me back to the days of TheDraw...

RE: Torrent "file list" - JavaScript error - SSL certificate access
That's what I mean. How do you insert ALT-7 into your copy con?
AFAIK it can't be done.

Edit to add - same story with the other so called "control characters".

Edit to add - same story with the other so called "control characters".

The "copy con" command echoes keystrokes into a file. Type in the command, like "copy con myprog.com", hit ENTER, and go nuts with the ALT-keypad typing. Then CTRL+Z (ASCII 26, or ALT-26) to signal the command to flush input into the file and return.

ALT-7 works just fine as well with this method.

"con" is an MSDOS device, short for "console". Reading from "con" gets data from the keyboard, and writing to "con" echoes information to the terminal.

Since ASCII 26 isn't available, as it signals "end of input" or "end of file", coding a raw ML program means you won't have access to the 8-bit SBB instruction. But one can code up a rudimentary compiler to take a string of base 16 digits and convert each pair into a byte. And then build a better compiler after that. And so on.

Like they did in the good old days.

RE: Torrent "file list" - JavaScript error - SSL certificate access
Ummm. Try it.
With Win 7 Enterprise it returns an access denied error.

Gonna load up a DOS 6.22 virtual box when I get time and try it again, however it did not work for me back in the mid 90's.

Edit to add - CTRL-Z adds an EOF marker character which is the symbol for female... circle with a + below.

Under XP SP3 32bit, I opened up "cmd", and what follows is the result output:

Code:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\ILuvBacn>copy con thug.txt
Hello there!
^Z
        1 file(s) copied.

C:\Documents and Settings\ILuvBacn>type thug.txt
Hello there!

C:\Documents and Settings\ILuvBacn>copy con thug.txt
BEEP^G
Overwrite thug.txt? (Yes/No/All): y
BEEP^G
^Z
        1 file(s) copied.

C:\Documents and Settings\ILuvBacn>type thug.txt
BEEP
BEEP

C:\Documents and Settings\ILuvBacn>

For sake of reference, ^Z is EOF (CTRL+Z), ^G is BEEP - first ^G was ALT-7, second was CTRL+G. The beep wasn't reproduced on my computer after "type thug.txt", but thug.txt is 14 bytes - two lines at 7 bytes each - "BEEP", plus ASCII 7, 13 and 10 (13/10 is CRLF, which is the MSDOS/Windows newline sequence).

If you're getting an Access Denied error, ensure that you have the right permissions to access the folder or the command prompt. Try running it with administrator-level access, however that works under Win7. If you're still getting access denied errors, let me know - perhaps we should call upon an admin to break this thread into a new thread to troubleshoot this issue.

That's odd, it does work with 7 when running cmd as admin. < scratches head >
I distinctly remember trying to do a copy con in DOS ( many times ) and as soon as I let go of the ALT key it would just beep and not be copied into the file.

Could have been a bug ( feature? ) in one of the older versions of DOS, I started with Tandy DOS 2.1, went to Compaq 3.2, MS 4.0, 5.0, and 6.22 during those years.

IDK < shrugs >

I'm not sure which version or style DOS that would have been. Entering some keystrokes at the MSDOS command.com input would certainly issue a beep, but that didn't occur within a "copy con" operation - at least with MSDOS 3.3 and higher, if not earlier versions.

Anyway, it sounds like it's definitely a permissions issue. If you attempted to write a file to the directory noted at the command line and you got the Access Denied error, it would be a simple matter of opening up the folder and editing its properties (at least under XP).

Thanks for the split, Skank!
