Former U.S. Prosecutor Sues Obama and NSA over PRISM Scandal

Former US prosecutor Larry Klayman and the parents of the killed Navy Seal Team VI member Michael Strange have filed a lawsuit against President Obama, the NSA and several other players connected to the PRISM scandal. Through the class action lawsuit they demand compensation for severe privacy abuses as well as violations of several other constitutional rights.

Over the past days the PRISM scandal has dominated the news. The Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald pushed out leak after leak, revealing how millions of people around the world are being monitored by U.S. intelligence agencies.

The revelations turned online privacy into a worldwide mainstream discussion. Privacy activists shouted "we told you so," Orwell quotes were rife, and Kim Dotcom warmed up the public for his PRISM-proof email service.

Following the leaks the NSA and the US Government have been heavily criticized for their disregard of people’s privacy, and perhaps not totally unexpectedly this weekend the first legal action was filed.

TorrentFreak just obtained a copy of a complaint submitted at a federal court in Columbia, targeting President Obama, the NSA, Eric Holder and Verizon who all played a role in the mass surveillance scheme.

The class action lawsuit was filed by Larry Klayman, a former US prosecutor under the Reagan administration, together with the parents of the killed Navy SEAL Team VI member Michael Strange.

The plaintiffs accuse the PRISM participants of violating their constitutional rights, reasonable expectation of privacy, free speech and association, right to be free of unreasonable searches and seizures, among other illegal and criminal acts. Both Klayman and the Navy Seal parents demand compensation for the damage they suffered.

The complaint demands relief for violations of the defendants’ rights under the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. In addition it lists violations of privacy, including intrusion upon seclusion, freedom of expression and association, due process, and other illegal acts.

(See link for contested points.)

Thus far, authorities and the technology companies involved in the surveillance scandal have refuted most accusations, claiming that they are operating within the boundaries of the law. Time will tell whether the present lawsuit will arrive at another conclusion.

This should be a Class Action suit on behalf of the entire population of the planet - at least those of electronically "connected" countries, not merely a small number of individuals.

All the planet! Even those that are not connected electronically, since they are too very susceptible to being exploited, murdered, and like a thief in the night, they are the most preyed upon since they lack the means to tell their stories about their place in time and lives. All the planet!!

Thanks, April. i was just going to post about this. I also see that Rand Paul wants some of this action.

Let's hope that there really are many more revelations coming. Soon.

Already the stories attempting to demonize and discount Snowden and minimize the entire story are beginning to appear in the MSM. We can't allow that to work on the minds of the masses. This entire situation needs continuous reporting. To big to fail.

Ron Paul ‘Worried’ U.S. Might Kill Snowden With Drone: ‘I Don’t Think For A Minute He’s A Traitor’
by Matt Wilstein | 8:14 pm, June 11th, 2013 VIDEO » 47 comments

Towards the end of an outspoken 24 hours of media appearances, former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) appeared via phone on Fox Business Network with Melissa Francis and made a bold prediction about NSA leaker Edward Snowden‘s future. “I’m worried about somebody in our government who might kill him, with a cruise missile or a drone missile.”

“We live in a bad time where American citizens don’t even have rights and that they can be killed,” Paul continued. “But the gentleman is trying to tell the truth about what’s going on, he is not defecting, there’s no signs of that happening. It’s a shame we’re in an age where people who tell the truth about what the government is doing gets into trouble.”

Paul said he “absolutely” feels confident that Snowden has no intention of selling more U.S. secrets to a foreign government as some have feared. “I don’t think for a minute that he is a traitor,” Paul said. “Everybody is worried about him and what they’re going to do and how they will convict him of treason and how they’re going to kill him, but what about the people who destroy our Constitution? What kind of penalty are those individuals who take the Second or the Fourth amendment and destroy it? What do we think about people who assassinate American citizens without trials and assume that’s the law of the land? That’s where our problem is.”

When presented with the recent polling figures that show 56% of Americans support the NSA’s surveillance practices, Paul suggested those sentiments can be attributed to “propaganda” along the lines of “if you’re not for NSA spying on people, then you’re un-American, you’re unpatriotic, you hate America.”

Finally, Paul weighed on his son Senator Rand Paul‘s vow to challenge the NSA programs in the Supreme Court. While he said he supports “anything like that to call attention to it,” he added, “I’ve not been overly confident about the court system. I emphasize the fact that the most important thing is that the American people wake up and understand what liberty is all about, what the Constitution is about. and if they don’t understand that, nothing will change it.”

Does old boy Ron forget that his son is all for drone strikes against Americans? Rand Paul is a joke.
