Newest U.S. Counterterrorism Strategy: Trolling
The program, called Viral Peace, seeks to occupy the virtual space that extremists fill, one thread or Twitter exchange at a time. Shahed Amanullah, a senior technology adviser to the State Department and Viral Peace’s creator, tells Danger Room he wants to use “logic, humor, satire, [and] religious arguments, not just to confront [extremists], but to undermine and demoralize them.” Think of it as strategic trolling, in pursuit of geopolitical pwnage.

Add this as a bit of a twist to:

and

Steel on Steel - Logical Fallacy of the Week List

and

Disinformation Tactics: The Methods Used To Keep You In The Dark
http://concen.org/forum/thread-31444.html

.. then you can better recognize schillbots,or you can be a complete douche and use this information to be the most insidious troll you can be and get banned - well from here at least.

Now careful not to be so cynical as to project this onto every thread you read or even go hunting for them, lest you/I/we end up falling prey to the opposite "Trust No One" spectrum. Find a nice balance of discernment, pick your battles and don't feed the trolls.

RE: Newest U.S. Counterterrorism Strategy: Trolling
I usually define 'trolling' primarily as the act of derailing threads with off topic bullshit and just being generally disruptive without ever presenting any valid contention of one's own and without genuine concern for truth or commitment to intellectual honesty or fairness and just an overall general lack of any real interest in what is at issue.

I never understood why people on forums prefer politeness to blunt honesty or civility to candor. If I'm full of shit then I want to know it, if my contention or position is vulnerable to legitimate criticism then I consider the act of mercilessly and tactlessly ripping it to shreds as a personal favor.

Why do those traits have to be mutually exclusive? Perhaps find a polite honesty that is concise and to the point. Civility can co-exist with candour; and although it was not addressed, passion can be expressed without a confrontational or mocking tone. When labels, ad homeniem and personal attacks et al come into play; it can derail a thread discussion just as well as any other tactic from the COINTELPRO playbook - whether that was the writer's intent or not.

If there is misrepresentation challenge those "facts", ideas by countering them with ideas of your own, deconstructing them, building upon them with a new point of view for context and application.

I prefer polite to blunted words being exchanged because it is a vessel more conducive to discussion. Being direct and respectful lubricates understanding and works towards potential solution, rather than debate, which can drive a wedge and polarize a community.

It's just very frustrating to know where all these crazy ass ideologies come from and whose interests they ultimately serve and to have the whole goddamn movement highjacked by them, especially when there are so many simple and realistic reforms that are in the interests of the vast majority of people which, if implemented, would very quickly and very drastically improve this outrageous and intolerable situation we all find ourselves in.

Quote:"He, who will not reason, is a bigot; he, who cannot, is a fool; and he, who dares not, is a slave."

Pick each point and address it with reason rather than calling it crazy ass, outrageous, bigoted and intolerable or prefixing it with goddamn and we're getting somewhere into the constructive realm of discussion.

Hey how about creating a thread called "Simple and Realistic Reforms that are in the Interests of the Vast Majority" and run with it or take them in piecework and post it into ConCen Originals or Breaking the Chains.

Well let's be clear, I have put up a lot of solid argument to address this stuff. I have never relied on the horse laugh to make my case. The horse laugh usually come in after which ever cretin I'm dealing with has totally ignored all reason fact and logic I have gone to the trouble to present and instead just goes straight cognitive inert on the question.

I wasn't singling you out I was just salvaging words from the closest source for my last post - it was a generalized proclamation as to the state of trolling and anti-trolling.

When it gets to the point of talking to a wall, maybe disengage as they have buried themselves .. anyone with eyes to see will take that in.

Disengaging is the easy part. Avoiding reengagement is the tougher aspect of starving the trolls. They'll try to throw out more comments to stir up shit, and tend to catch more fish on forums or chat systems with larger users, which requires more people demonstrate self control.

It can be easier just to let it happen and consider it an extra analysis of how the hive mind works, while ensuring it doesn't entirely dominate a forum.
Truth appears in many forms. Find those that resonate with you.

- "Humans are not a rational animal, but a rationalizing one." - Leon Festinger
