The Royal Canadian Mint is challenging software developers to create apps for MintChip, the evolution of currency.

About the Challenge
The Royal Canadian Mint MintChip Challenge invites software developers to create innovative digital payment applications using MintChip, a R&D phase technology available only to challenge participants. Developers and the public are also encouraged to share ideas for how a digital currency can be used.

Winners will receive approximately $50,000 in gold from the Mint as well as promotional exposure. Prizes will be awarded for the apps that best demonstrate the potential value of the MintChip technology and have the greatest potential impact on digital payment technology. Submitted apps can run on Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows or desktop and mobile browsers.

The Mint will provide participating developers with a software developement kit (SDK), two microSD MintChips, and two remote MintChip accounts they can use to integrate the Mint’s technology with their digital payment applications.

The public and developers have approximately four months to share ideas and build their submissions. A panel of distinguished judges from the tech, venture capital, media, and retailer industries will select winners, and the general public will vote to identify a “Popular Choice” winner.

Challenge Goals:

•Create software applications and proofs of concept utilizing MintChip
•Highlight potential advantages of the technology and digital currency

WTF!! I still dont get how people can think E-currency or digital currency is a good idea. I mean do people even really think about this enough to weigh out all the potential hazards of this coming to fruition?
I see they want people to highlight the advantages but not the disadvantages of course.
Also check out the people judging this "challenge"...not surprising to see Google and CBC News in the mix.

Well, the upside of electronic currency is that we can hack it and make ourselves rich!!!
Suck on that one, elitist banking scumbags!

LOL that would be great. Unfortunately I think thats why they're trying so damn hard to get complete control of the internets. that way they can track and trace every hacker in order to lock them up.

This world is not meant for me. Its getting real dark and depressing to see all the crap unfolding in front of my eyes. And I dont see any way up from here unless the majority of people start to REALLY wake the fuck up. I know some others here have realized this for some time now but I cant help it, I try to stay optimistic -its getting harder and harder to remain that way. Its like my soul is being drained little by little and Im changing into someone else. Dont know how to put it any other way.
It sucks.

They are trying hard but the biggest reason they will fail is that they don't understand the internet or electronics or computers or hacking...at least the lawmakers and lobbyists don't. Once you see how the word "security" is not applicable to these venues, you can see it's like trying to herd cats. It can't be done.
For the most part, everything is based on a Swiss cheese OS made by Microsoft. Linux and Mac OS (*nix based) have been touted as unhackable and virus immune. HA! That was bullshit as is all of their rhetoric about securing the net and all of their other propaganda about the web. For every roadblock they put up, there are seven ways around it.
The final nail is based on the authoritarian grip. The harder they try to hold control the more it slips through their fingers. This is the way of the world. Empires crumble. They can't win. It's as simple as that.

You're right. And I know you're more tech/computer savvy than I am for sure. It's good to know that. I could always use a bigger boost of optimism, much appreciated.

You are most welcome, Silva.
It's difficult when we get too focused on the negative. Life has more than one side to it.

What you should do is get the fuck away from people for a while and take a look at the rest of this world. Humans represent only a small fraction of what this planet has. I'm not some New Ager or anything but try spending a couple if hours in the company of a spider as it builds a web or the rivers and trees and all the other impossibly beautiful forms of life inhabiting our little blue globe. The Universe is truly a miracle, a wonder and when you remove yourself (if only for a wee while) from our human bullshit you can see the world as it really is. None of our shit really matters. All that matters is that you are alive and that you care and that you carry a love for all in your heart. Silva, the very fact that you feel the way you do simply shows that you still have your soul intact. Start to worry when you stop feeling the pain of our plight. We humans are lost in the dark most of the time, but we are made of light and soon enough we, as a species will remember this.

I wonder how quickly gold will devalue after they hand out their "prize" and have an integrable digital currency model?
