New "Debunking" Series

Quote:inFact with Brian Dunning is the web video series that gives you the real facts behind popular myths, promoting high-quality information that helps people live better lives.

Here's the episode I thought everyone here would be interested in:

Considered uploading it, but would rather not waste bandwidth just to share what could very well be propaganda.

What's the motive here? Suspicious Thoughts?

RE: New "Debunking" Series
I used to listen to Dunning's Skeptoid podcast. It is short, punchy, and well-produced.

The world can be a big, scary, confusing place. In order to make sense of it and find peace, people adopt an over-arching set of beliefs which allow them to process the vast amount of information in our world in an organized, semi-automated manner.

For some people that paradigm is Orthodox Judaism. For another person it might be GBLT lifestyle. Yet another might view the world as a retired Marine Corps drill sergeant ultra-nationalist.

Skeptics are the same way. They believe they view the world via cold, hard, scientific analysis and materialism. A whole industry of "Skeptic" media has sprung up to feed such people with daily news, podcasts, television shows, and music.

Healthy skepticism and critical thinking skills are good. The problem with 'skeptics' is that they begin to derive pleasure from 'debunking' every silly idea that comes down the road. That pleasure calcifies their thinking in to a rigid set of beliefs which they never examine. They become reactionary. They stop thinking.

As a result of this loss of thinking, they dismiss rational ideas as irrational, not because the ideas are, but because of habit and prior prejudice.

Brian Dunning's media product perpetuates and reinforces that prejudice with his regular, short, quick injections of 'you're smarter than others' and snark. His product must be meeting a market demand, because he has success with it.

RE: New "Debunking" Series
Nice synopsis on the Dunning series (Skeptoid Media Inc.) Mr. Prime. Could not have wrote it better myself.

One more point to tack on.

The skeptical being a default mind frame tends to classify a lot of enigma into enemy propaganda when there could have just been a motive to present a point for simple discussion.

Trust No One was programmed into us from generation X-Files (more or less along with F*ck tha Police and Fight the Power) but that can, more often than not, make for a society that is inherently suspicious of their fellows and reflexively combative to many forms of leadership, thus collaboration within a populace peppered heavily with the 'skeptic' demographic that can be a chore.
There are no others, there is only us.

RE: New "Debunking" Series
I even tend to lean towards solipsism, but defaulting to "I'm skeptical" seems different to me than "you're wrong!". Difference being that I'm willing to consider that there could be truth to things not "backed by science", whatever that's supposed to mean.

The way I look at it, consider everything, but always remain skeptical. I don't equate skepticism with the belief that everyone unable to "prove" their claim is wrong...

Skepticism itself isn't close-minded, as the straw-man is usually portrayed; but I believe defaulting to the "you're wrong!" belief is. Gladly, I wasn't close-minded enough to ignore things such as "The Four Agreements" book that I recently uploaded because it lacked "evidence" (other than common sense); some things don't need any external evidence, the "proof" comes from application of the principles in the lives we're living...
