The Cure For Depression!?

Before the modern era, there was very little depression (or stress too, for that matter) as we know it. Sure, people were sad, worried, angry, in pain, or plain terrified. But they weren’t very often depressed. People had different words for things then.

But also, there wasn’t an epidemic. Class, customs, traditions, religion, the struggles of poverty and societal rules all provided a more solid backbone – and a focus – for our nervous energies.

Put simply, depression thrives when we have little focus or direction in our lives. In previous eras, there was little time for many people to be depressed. And if we did feel “lost”, there were accepted ways of doing things, to pull us back on track, to when we needed to be.

For better or worse, today there are a multitude of “tracks” we can choose from. We have a smorgasbord of choices, opinions, religions, and lifestyles. We can choose none of these belief systems, or pick and choose parts of many. We can exist idly, with time but very little money, or greedily chasing large salaries. We might have doubt about which of these we wish to truly aim for.

For some, however, these increased choices comes at a cost.

In the affluent modern West, our mind can easily become directionless, rudderless, full of double guessing and doubt – all of which are the product of too much thinking.

Without the structures and sureities of old, it is up to ourselves to give ourselves the backbone once provided by society. It is up to us to save ourselves.

How? The easiest thing for us to do is to give ourselves some really clear goals and directions.

Here’s an exercise, which might help this:

Write down what you want to achieve in life. Rethink and look at this list often – it’s an important document.

Whilst this sounds extremely simple, it can be a key thing for many depressed people. Whenever they are lost, simply thinking about what they really want in life, is half the way to solving, and preventing depression.

Once you know what you want, see for yourself if you feel in a better state, and less prone to depression.

If you do this, I promise you that you’ll feel better about your life in general. But, you still have the “sharp end” of depression to deal with – depressive lows, or depression attacks. The next step should help you to deal with any depression attacks, and even to understand why this all happened to you, and not others in a similar boat.


Why Me?


Depression comes about because our mind is left unoccupied, as we found out before. Most of us are creative, improvement-directed creatures. But it is worse than before. With nothing external to fix and improve upon – our minds take the energy once directed at hunting deer or building castles, and starts to tinker with itself.

We are obsessed with inner perfection as much as we are of external perfection. Given our mind today has the luxury of looking at itself – like our muscles, hair, or clothes – we are continually drawn towards self improvement.

Depressed people are often particularly creative, intelligent and self-reflective. If we are mentally tired, foggy, depressed, or sad, then – we think “we should improve this”. Everyone wants a perfect mind, right? Perfect happiness, too, seems within our reach.

For many, depression starts in our early to mid teens. This is a time when we are becoming aware (often overly self aware).

In this state, we might push away negative feelings – feelings of inadequacy, or social anxiety, perhaps.

However, as we are not able to fix the cause, it always returns.

For many, this is the start of depression. The next time bad feelings return, they are worse. They also have the fear of their return, increasing our levels of anxiety.

We have the start of a very simple, yet deadly, loop. As we push away bad feelings harder, it starts a vicious cycle.

We grow to fear our own fear, our fear begins to feed upon itself. It is a little like the Stay Puft monster in Ghostbusters. It would be funny if it weren’t so serious. Sometimes, the feelings can become so bad that a person is drawn to the ultimate act of desperation – suicide.

All you need to know is depression sucks, but it can be flicked off with a simple, counter-intuitive trick. Well then, what is it?

Just making some goals and plans doesn’t seem much solace for someone seriously caught in the middle of really bad depression attacks. When it can feel like you’re under attack from all sides, and such a situation has gone on for years and years…

Well, partly we should make plans and goals we want to work towards. It can help us feel back on track.

But, most importantly, we should do something else we haven’t done much of before:

Simply, we should let it be.

As hard as that sounds. The trick – or cure – for depression is to let ourselves feel depressed. To not try to make ourselves feel better. We should learn to request that the negative feelings hang around for years, even.

It sounds crazy, but it really is the answer.

When you look forward to something, you don’t fear it. Importantly, you don’t push it away with the same amount of energy. And hence, you don’t give it the energy to become worse.

When you feel anxious or depressed, try welcoming the feeling.

Crazy idea, right?

How could we do such a thing? Remember, you are not welcoming something that is really real. In reality, anxiety and depression are just like flavors, or smells – something that exists in your head. It can’t harm you in itself. It just feels unpleasant. Without form – let them be. There are limits as to how bad they can become.

If you let them stay, they will probably just wander off. Nothing lasts forever.

A phrase that might help in such cases, might be:

I’m happy for this depression to last three weeks, if it needs to.

I am creating these feelings by my own desire to be rid of them.

Hello, old friend. Stay around, I don’t mind.


If you have to, try saying it again.

Still having problems? Try it again. If you understand why your depression got started, you should believe this, and not merely use it as a strategy to get better.

Too many variables in the modern world. Yes wheat and other grains that can cause such illnesses were still consumed but not to the extent they are nowadays as they constitute much processed foods with the especially toxic gluten fragment being used. Then add in all the excitotoxins that modern man is exposed to such as MSG and Aspartame all contributors to depression and we can see why there is an epidemic. Final nail in the coffin, so to speak, is fluoride which is being consumed more and more. Even countries that do no use it are exposed due to the many imported foods, even teas, which concentrate it.
So yes the above post is all good and well when the causes are psychological but there are many physiological reasons for depression in the modent world.

edit: I forgot to add all the SSRIs that actually cause depression and given out like candy these days especially in 'the land of the free'. Lol the free my ass.

depression is more a state of mind than a state of affairs or a state of health. your "mood" is not your ruler. Depression is merely a person convinced they are a slave to their emotions. Positive reinforcement and and admission that happy or sad you can be kidding yourself is the best step forward.

From a man who thought he was depressed. the mind can effect the body.
