More Posturing, now officially over Chinese channels. Cold War, Serious Threat or somewhere in between?

UPDATE: December 1, 2011; 10:00AM

Amid the tensions in Iran and the destruction of a second nuclear facility (which is detailed in the original story below), we find it necessary to present our readers with an update made available via The Daily Crux and Zero Hedge, in which Major General Zhang Zhaozhong, a professor from the Chinese National Defense University, said China “will not hesitate to protect Iran even with a third World War.”

Trillions of dollars in debt and regional energy resources are at play here. Perhaps this is the reason Iran is publicly downplaying the threat and the U.S. is overtly ignoring the latest bombing/explosion at a second Iranian nuclear facility. Not a single news report of the incident is present on the homepages of major media outlets like CNN, NBC, ABC or Fox. For their part, Iran completely denies the explosion took place and national media agencies have reportedly pulled all references to the story, even though satellite images (detailed below) confirm it happened.

Don’t miss this Chinese news report. Like the U.S., China has its own propaganda machine and this is what their populace is being fed:

(In Chinese with English subtitles):

ORIGINAL REPORT: Covert Op Suspected as Second Iranian Nuke Site Goes Up In Flames

Either Iran’s nuclear and military programs are headed by imbeciles or their country is under attack.

Though Iran completely denied the incident yesterday, The Australian reports that satellite images confirm another Iranian military site has exploded:

Satellite imagery seen by The Times confirmed that a blast that rocked the city of Isfahan on Monday struck the uranium enrichment facility there, despite denials by Tehran.

The images clearly showed billowing smoke and destruction, negating Iranian claims yesterday that no such explosion had taken place. Israeli intelligence officials told The Times that there was “no doubt” that the blast struck the nuclear facilities at Isfahan and that it was “no accident”.

The explosion at Iran’s third-largest city came as satellite images emerged of the damage caused by one at a military base outside Tehran two weeks ago that killed about 30 members of the Revolutionary Guard, including General Hassan Moghaddam, the head of the Iranian missile defence program.

Iran claimed that the Tehran explosion occurred during testing on a new weapons system designed to strike at Israel. But several Israeli officials have confirmed that the blast was intentional and part of an effort to target Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

On Monday, Isfahan residents reported a blast that shook tower blocks in the city at about 2.40pm and seeing a cloud of smoke rising over the nuclear facility on the edge of the city.

“This caused damage to the facilities in Isfahan, particularly to the elements we believe were involved in storage of raw materials,” said one military intelligence source.

He would not confirm or deny Israel’s involvement in the blast, instead saying that there were “many different parties looking to sabotage, stop or coerce Iran into stopping its nuclear weapons program”.

Iran went into frantic denial yesterday as news of the explosion at Isfahan emerged. Alireza Zaker-Isfahani, the city’s governor, claimed that the blast had been caused by a military exercise in the area but state-owned agencies in Tehran soon removed this story and issued a government denial that any explosion had taken place at all.

A government cover up? Say it ain’t so.

There’s a war on. This was no accident.

The real question is, how, if at all, will Iran respond? Are they biding their time because they are finalizing a nuclear weapon that they intend to deploy against Israel or Western targets, or has all the machisimo displayed by Iranian President Ahmadinejad in recent years been nothing but talk?

We may soon find out.

RE: Israel, US & UK Consider Attack On Iran: Corporate-Fascists Clamor for Iran War
Quote:US, Israel covert war against Iran suspected: report

AFP - Many former US intelligence officials and Iran experts believe last month's explosion at a military base near Tehran was part of a covert effort by the US, Israel and other states to disable Iran's nuclear and missile programs, The Los Angeles Times reported late Sunday.

The huge explosion ripped through the Revolutionary Guard Corps base on November 12, leveling most of the buildings and killing 17 people, including a founder of Iran's ballistic missile program, General Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam.

The newspaper said the goal of the covert effort is to derail Iran's quest for a nuclear weapons capability and to stave off an Israeli or US airstrike to eliminate or lessen the threat.

"It looks like the 21st century form of war," the paper quotes Patrick Clawson, who directs the Iran Security Initiative at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, as saying. "It does appear that there is a campaign of assassinations and cyber war, as well as the semi-acknowledged campaign of sabotage."

Any such operation would be highly classified, and those who might know are not talking, the report said.

For years, the United States and its allies have sought to hinder Iran's weapons programs by secretly supplying faulty parts, plans or software, The Times said. No proof of sabotage has emerged, but Iran's nuclear program clearly has hit obstacles that thwarted progress in recent years.

"We definitely are doing that," the report quotes Art Keller, a former CIA case officer who worked on Iran, as saying. "It's pretty much the stated mission of the (CIA's) counter-proliferation division to do what it takes to slow Iran's weapons of mass destruction program."

Many Western experts are convinced that American and Israeli engineers secretly fed the Stuxnet computer worm into Iran's nuclear program in 2010, The Times pointed out.

The virus reportedly caused centrifuges used to enrich uranium to spin out of control and shatter, the paper said.

Neither the US nor the Israeli government has acknowledged any role in the apparent cyber-attack, the report noted.

There's a lot going around about this now, and many different views. The two biggest ones are that either an attack has already begun (via 'covert' opperations), even though Western sources are doing their utmost to gloss over the fact, or that it's all a dissinfo campaign and there's no real Western plan to attack's just the hot news topic of today to distract us from elsewhere.

Thing is...Iran clearly now thinks a full attack is now imminent it would seem...

Intelligence sources are reporting the movement of long-range missile batteries inside Iran, a move seen as preparation for an attack, according to a story carried by the Telegraph on Monday.

The British newspaper also reported Iran’s Revolutionary Guard heightened its alert level.

Mohammed Ali Jaafari, Revolutionary Guard commander, gave a command to raise operational readiness on the basis of “potential external strikes and covert attacks.” The command included moving missile batteries into “key defensive position.”

“There is deep concern within the senior leadership of the Iranian regime that they will be the target of a surprise military strike by either Israel or the US.,” a senior Western intelligence official told the newspaper.

The developments follow the destruction of a missile base outside of Tehran last month. It was reported that Israeli intelligence was responsible for the attack that almost completely destroyed the base and crippled Iran’s ballistic missile program. Further information released in early December indicated that the covert operation was undertaken by Israel, the U.S. “and other states,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

In May, the U.K.’s Mirror published a report detailing efforts to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program. Tamir Pardo, Mossad’s new boss, is behind an effort to assassinate Iran’s nuclear scientists, Spiegel Online reported in August.

“The alleged campaign also involves other tactics as well as targeted assassinations. The cyber-attack using the Stuxnet computer virus, which paralyzed large parts of the Iranian nuclear program in the summer of 2010, is supposedly also part of Israel’s secret campaign against Iran,” the German publication reported.

In 2008, noted journalist Seymour Hersh reported on Congress funding covert attacks inside Iran. The previous year, then president Bush authorized covert action against Iran. Bush signed a “nonlethal presidential finding” that put into motion a CIA plan that reportedly included a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran’s currency and international financial transactions, according to ABC News.

Further evidence that a coordinated campaign against Iran is currently underway emerged on Sunday when Iran claimed it had shot down a U.S. drone over its territory.

Reuters reports that international schools in Iran have not reopened following the attack on the British embassy in Tehran last week in response to London imposing financial sanctions. European countries have recalled their ambassadors and foreign nationals are leaving the country. Residents are stockpiling food and other essentials.

On November 28, blogger and WorldNetDaily journalist Aaron Klein reported multiple eyewitness accounts of the Israeli military moving large missiles into position outside of Jerusalem and in the West Bank, adding further to speculation that an attack may be in the works. Israeli officials refused to comment on the movement.

Amid the persisting rhetoric and speculations about an attempt by the Israeli regime to launch a military strike against Iranian nuclear sites, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi reiterates that the Islamic Republic will put up a “wonderful” defense to such attacks.

We do not desire war or seek an adventure, since our nation is prudent and sensible, said Salehi. However, we will brilliantly defend ourselves if we come under attack, he added, quoted in an IRIB report on an interview he held with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published on Tuesday.

We will defend ourselves by any means, but on our own territory. We will of course suffer injuries, but we will inflict harm to the attackers, he added.

The United States and the Israeli regime have repeatedly threatened Tehran with military strikes under the false pretext that Iran's nuclear program may have a covert military diversion.

Iran has refuted the allegations, saying that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

On Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak once again threatened Iran with “all options,” yet ruling out speculations about the possibility of an imminent attack on Iran's nuclear sites.

"We have no intention of acting for the moment...We should not engage in war when it is not necessary, but there may come a time or another when we are forced to face tests," Barak said.

However, the senior Tel Aviv official reaffirmed Israel's anti-Iran rhetoric, threatening Tehran with “all options.”

Iranian officials have vowed to deliver a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would certainly reach far beyond the Middle East.

In response to a question on whether Iran is providing financial and training support to Afghan militants to prevent Afghanistan from remaining a US outpost as in the case of Iraq, Salehi emphasized that Iran supports Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who was elected to office by the people of the country.

As long as Afghan people trust President Karzai, we will as well, he noted.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have been put on a war footing amid increasing signs that the West is taking direct action to cripple Iran’s nuclear programme.

An order from Gen Mohammed Ali Jaafari, the commander of the guards, raised the operational readiness status of the country’s forces, initiating preparations for potential external strikes and covert attacks.

Western intelligence officials said the Islamic Republic had initiated plans to disperse long-range missiles, high explosives, artillery and guards units to key defensive positions.

The order was given in response to the mounting international pressure over Iran’s nuclear programme. Preparation for a confrontation has gathered pace following last month’s report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna that produced evidence that Iran was actively working to produce nuclear weapons.

The Iranian leadership fears the country is being subjected to a carefully co-ordinated attack by Western intelligence and security agencies to destroy key elements of its nuclear infrastructure.

Recent explosions have added to the growing sense of paranoia within Iran, with the regime fearing it will be the target of a surprise military strike by Israel or the US.

Quote:Downed US Drone in Iran Reveals Broader Covert War
President Barack Obama promised that "No options off the table means I'm considering all options."
by John Glaser, December 08, 2011

Iran’s recovery of a downed U.S. surveillance drone publicized America’s ongoing covert war on Iran, a part of the Obama administration’s strategy even more bellicose than his predecessor’s.

U.S. actions towards Iran are being couched as an attempt to prevent their attainment of nuclear weapons, despite a failure to put forth a shred of evidence that a weapons program is underway.

In a statement on Thursday, President Obama reiterated this confrontational approach with a popular euphemism for international aggression: “No options off the table means I’m considering all options.”

And many options are indeed being carried out. columnist and former CIA agent Philip Giraldi wrote this week that sources have revealed to him secret presidential findings “authorizing stepped-up covert action” against Iran.

“A ‘finding,’” he explained, “is top-level approval for secret operations considered to be particularly politically sensitive.” President Bush had issued a number of findings authorizing “the use of intelligence assets to disrupt Iranian Revolutionary Guard” as well as one in 2007 that authorized “attacks against Iranian nuclear scientists” and the use of “computer viruses to disrupt the Iranian computer network.”

But President Obama has gone a step further. He recently issued a finding which “extends existing initiatives and is intended to strangle Iran by creating insurgencies along all of the country’s borders,” primarily by supporting Iranian dissident groups to conduct domestic terrorism and undermine the Iranian regime.

In addition to those efforts, according to the Washington Post, the “White House also has boosted sales of bunker-busting munitions, fighter jets and other military hardware to Persian Gulf states as well as to Israel, building on long-running efforts to boost the military capabilities of key U.S. allies in the region” in a broad effort to garrison Iran’s surroundings with provocative militarism.

The Iranian government issued a formal complaint and summoned Swiss ambassador Livia Leu Agosti, who handles diplomacy for the U.S. in Iran. Iranian officials said the U.S. drone they are now in possession of is evidence of espionage efforts inside Iran and that Iran ”strongly protests the violation of an RQ-170 spy aircraft deep into its airspace,” and asked for “an urgent response and compensation from the US government.”

Rhetoric from the White House and Congress remains aggressive and threatening towards Iran, despite being exposed as the aggressors themselves. Surely, if the U.S. had uncovered a number of Iranian spy operations and terrorism-funding programs inside America, Washington would be doing much more than issuing formal complaints.

An Iranian scientist became the latest victim on Wednesday of a covert effort to sabotage the country's nuclear ambitions when he died in a bomb explosion in Tehran.

Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a chemist who worked in the uranium enrichment plant in Natanz, was killed when an assassin riding a motorcycle attached an explosive device to his Peugeot 405.

Roshan, 32, was the fifth Iranian nuclear scientist to be killed since 2007. Two attacks using an identical modus operandi occurred in 2010, claiming the lives of one nuclear physicist and wounding another, Fereydoun Abbasi, who has since become the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation.

As in the past, Iran was quick to blame Israel. "The responsibility of this explosion falls on the Zionist regime," said Safar Ali Bratloo, the deputy governor of Tehran province.

The sophistication of the attack – signified by the fact that the bomb killed only its target and nobody else in the same vehicle – bore the hallmarks of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, according to western security experts. Israeli officials declined to confirm or deny this claim, in keeping with their usual policy.

However, General Yoav Mordechai, the Israeli military spokesman, said on his official Facebook page: "I don't know who took revenge on the Iranian scientist, but I am definitely not shedding a tear."

Quote:Israeli TV report shows air force gearing up for Iran attack, says moment of truth is near
‘IAF expects losses, and knows it can’t destroy entire Iranian program’
By Greg Tepper April 15, 2012, 11:49 pm

A major Israel TV station on Sunday night broadcast a detailed report on how Israel will go about attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities in the event that diplomacy and sanctions fail and Israel decides to carry out a military strike.

The report, screened on the main evening news of Channel 10, was remarkable both in terms of the access granted to the reporter, who said he had spent weeks with the pilots and other personnel he interviewed, and in the fact that his assessments on a strike were cleared by the military censor.

No order to strike is likely to be given before the P5+1 talks with Iran resume in May, the reporter, Alon Ben-David, said. “But the coming summer will not only be hot but tense.”

In the event that negotiations fail and the order is given for Israel to carry out an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, “dozens if not more planes” will take part in the mission: attack and escort jets, tankers for mid-air refueling, electronic warfare planes and rescue helicopters, the report said.

Ben-David said the Israel Air Force “does not have the capacity to destroy the entire Iranian program.” There will be no replication of the decisive strikes on Iraq’s Osirak reactor in 1981 or on Syria in 2007, he said. “The result won’t be definitive.” But, a pilot quoted in the report said, the IAF will have to ensure that it emerges with the necessary result, with “a short and professional” assault.

Ben-David said that if negotiations break down, and Iran moves key parts of its nuclear program underground to its Qom facility, the IAF “is likely to get the order and to set out on the long journey to Iran.”

“Years of preparations are likely to come to realization,” he said, adding that “the moment of truth is near.”

Ben-David interviewed several squadron leaders, pilots and other officers. He noted that some of the IAF personnel, “it is likely, will not return from the mission.” An officer named Gilad said it would be “naive” to think there would be no losses.

The IAF is said to be worried about the advanced anti-aircraft systems that Russia has sold to countries in the region, the report said. Among those systems, the SA 17 and 22 in Syria and Iran present a challenge.

According to the report, it’s the older versions of the F-15 that can fly further than any other plane in Israel’s arsenal, and this puts them on the front line of any potential attack.

One pilot said in the report that the F-15 “is a plane with a very wide range of operation — a combination of relatively energy-efficient engines, and significant flightworthiness regarding weapons and fuel.”

The IAF has a full-sized unmanned plane, the “Eitan,” that is said to be able to fly to Iran, the report indicated. “This plane can do all that is required of it when the order is given,” a pilot said, without elaboration.

The attack, the report said, would presumably trigger a war in northern Israel, with missile attacks (presumably from the Iranian-proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon). “There will be no tranquility and peace anywhere in Israel,” Ben-David said.

This could be the first full-scale war the IAF has fought in nearly 30 years, the report stated.

Pilots had already been told where their families would be moved, away from their bases, for safety, the report said.
