A huge asteroid will pass closer to Earth than the moon Tuesday, giving scientists a rare chance for study without having to go through the time and expense of launching a probe, officials said.

Earth's close encounter with Asteroid 2005 YU 55 will occur at 6:28 p.m. EST (2328 GMT) Tuesday, as the space rock sails about 201,000 miles from the planet.

I'd say the plans been there a lot longer, and that it's not just Israel who would stand to benefit from this. There are many players getting involved now, and of course the arms companies will be full of people rubbing their hands together once again.

Having three big wars in three parallel countries, all heated at the same time is okay for them, but dragging wars out over time, increasing financial gain for suppliers and arms dealers, well, sadly that's even better for them, and seems to be the aim.

Welcome to 1984, a world of a single endless war.

US sources: Israel ministers who opposed Iran strike are now for it
Quote:US sources: Israel ministers who opposed Iran strike are now for it
DEBKAfile Special Report November 6, 2011, 8:28 AM (GMT+02:00)

American sources told Fox television early Sunday, Nov. 6 that all the senior Israeli ministers who were formerly against attacking Iran's nuclear sites are now for it, having been updated on Iran's clandestine progress toward building a nuclear weapon. This information is due to be borne out when the IAEA publishes its next Iran report Tuesday, Nov. 8. The ministers are said to have changed their minds in the belief that the next round of sanctions will not be tough enough and point to the precedent of Israel's 1981 attack on Iraq's nuclear reactor which was never rebuilt.

According to debkafile's Washington sources, the Obama administration attributes the change of heart by those ministers to a conviction that Iran already has a nuclear weapon.

And so after ten days after feverish, unattributed Israeli news reporting on an imminent attack, the administration has drawn certain lines: Israel should go forward with its plans to strike Iran, while Washington will stress "diplomatic strategy."

This phrase, new in official US language on the nuclear controversy with Iran, does not rule out the military option. It was first aired last Thursday, Nov. 3 by US Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes, a member of the Barack Obama party attending the G-20 summit in Cannes....

....debkafile's military sources report that if the US, Britain and other NATO nations, such as France, Italy and Germany, participate in the attack, Israel will not. Its army, air force and navy will defend the home front, be available to engage Iran's allies to prevent them from striking the assault forces from the rear, and act as a strategic reserve. The danger would come from Syria, the Lebanese Hizballah, and the Palestinian Hamas and Jihad Islami in the Gaza Strip.

These contingency plans are subject to changes, especially if President Obama and other NATO allies decide after all against attacking Iran in the coming year. The hyperactivity will then subside and Israel will be thrown back on the dilemma of having to decide whether or not to conduct a lone military operation against Iran....

Quote:Israel’s Peres warns attack on Iran getting ‘closer’
Charly Wegman [AFP]
Sunday, November 6, 2011

Israeli President Shimon Peres warned on Sunday that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely, days before a report by the UN’s nuclear watchdog on Iran’s nuclear programme.

“The possibility of a military attack against Iran is now closer to being applied than the application of a diplomatic option,” Peres told the Israel Hayom daily.

“We must stay calm and resist pressure so that we can consider every alternative,” he added.

“I don’t think that any decision has already been made, but there is an impression that Iran is getting closer to nuclear weapons.”

RE: Israel, US & UK Consider Attack On Iran
A view from a mainstream Indian perspective on recent developments..

Quote:Israel’s Air Strike on Iran: A Credible Threat or a Bluff?
Prabir Purkayastha, Newsclick, Nov. 7, 2011

The Iran nuclear weapons issue is once again in the news, this time prompted by leaks in Israel media of a possible Israeli strike against Iranian nuclear facilities ( http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/netanyahu-trying-to-persuade-cabinet-to-support-attack-on-iran-1.393214 ). These leaks have been accompanied by unusual details that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has supplied about the long-range drills ( http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/israel-air-force-conducts-drills-for-long-range-attacks-1.393325 ) that its air force is conducting in a NATO air base in Italy, long range missile tests, etc. Once winter sets in, it is difficult to conduct such air attacks due to thick clouds over the region. So if an attack has to be launched on Iran's nuclear facilities, the window of opportunity is at best a few more weeks.

From the leaked reports that have appeared in the press, it appears that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been trying to muster a majority in the cabinet for such an attack, which he has yet not secured. The leaks also indicate that the preparations have moved from a discussion stage to a preparation stage and this is what prompted former Mossad chief Meir Dagan and former Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin, both of whom have been strongly opposed to such an attack to leak this to the press. Meir Dagan has been on record on the stupidity of such an attack.

While initially reports indicated that the US and UK were willing to be a party such an attack, the US has distanced itself by anonymous military sources now saying that Israel might launch such an attack without informing the US ( http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/u-s-military-official-we-are-concerned-israel-will-not-warn-us-before-iran-attack-1.393834 ). For those who follow strategic matters closely, it is inconceivable that Israel can take a unilateral action in a theatre that the US is so closely involved. Any action on Iran would cascade beyond Israel's control and would have a direct impact on US forces in Iraq and the Persian Gulf, and would cause international oil prices to go through the roof, compounding the current financial crisis. So what is really happening – is all this a charade to divert attention of the world from Palestine, where Israel stands increasingly isolated; or is it an attempt to stampede the US to take action against Iran; or are the current leaders of Israel in some kind of a death wish?

First, let us look at the military issues. Can an Israeli air strike without US really succeed in taking out Iran’s nuclear infrastructure? Let us leave UK out of it, as its part in such a venture can only be ornamental – it can shore up a feeling in Cameron and company of its lost imperial glory but has little strategic value on the ground. Let us not forget that NATO forces ran out of bombs and missiles ( http://rt.com/news/germany-libya-shells-nato/ ) in Libya in a matter of weeks and had to be replenished by Germany and the US, drawing some nasty comments by US commanders on their European counterparts.

By all accounts, any Israeli air strike has little chance of success. Iran has a much bigger nuclear program and much of it is dispersed and underground. It has a very strong air defence capabilities. Any strike against Iran's nuclear facilities can only have some chance of success if there is continuous set of sorties across a range of targets – it will require virtually taking out all major Iran's military and industrial infrastructure. This is not a repeat of the Iraq's Osiris reactor air strike – Iran's program is much broader and it has also learnt lessons from Iraq. So for any chance of success, the US forces have to participate and it cannot be a one-off strike, which is all that Israel is capable off.

Any attack launched by Israel will precipitate a counter strike by Iran against quite possibly US forces ( http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/11/02/israel-s-dangerous-plan-to-strike-iran-violence-against-us-targets-likely.html ). It might not be direct Iranian military attacks but could be unleashing its supporters, for example, in Iraq, where it has actually helped the US and UK to stabilise the current coalition in power. It could also lead to an immediate backlash in the entire region as anger of such a strike will spill over to other countries and on the streets ( http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/who-s-the-crazy-one-here-1.393940 ).

In 1956, Israel, the UK and France attacked Egypt without US support. Without US support, they had to retreat, not militarily but because they were completely isolated diplomatically. Israel can roar all it wants, but without US support, it cannot survive in today's diplomatic environment and it knows this very well.

This is not to say that Israeli leaders, particularly the duo leading Israel -- Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister and Ehud Barak, the Defence Minister -- cannot be stupid. So an act of extreme stupidity on their part to embroil the whole region in a war cannot be ruled out. But looking at the military reality, the game-plan here is more likely to stampede the US and NATO into a military action on Iran, with the threat that if you don’t, we will and you will be drawn in any case.

It is here that the current policies of the US in the region become important. The US today is far more willing to intervene militarily as well as through physical sanctions than at any time in the past. The policy under Obama has been regime change, not through direct occupation but a variety of means including military intervention. It has also shown in Libya that its words mean nothing. The US had reached an agreement with Gaddafi in 2003 that if he agreed to dismantle Libya’s nuclear weapons program, relations would be normalised and the west would give up its enmity. Gaddafi became a trusted ally against ‘War on Terror’ and was a party to renditions and the torture program of the CIA in this period. Nevertheless, the US and NATO forces not only participated in, if not initiated the military campaign against the Gaddafi regime and also were the ones instrumental in his capture and gory execution.

On the nuclear weapons issue, much is being made of IAEA having discovered that Iran is performing computer simulation of a nuclear weapon and conducting “explosions” in Parchin, near Tehran. What the media reports do not tell us is that these explosions are of conventional explosives that are used in the nuclear weapons trigger. Nor are these reports new. In any case when has anybody doubted that Iran wants to acquire nuclear weapons capability? The critical question is has it crossed the Rubicon and started building actual nuclear weapons? This is what NPT bars, not paper designs, not computer simulations, nor dreaming about nuclear weapons in your sleep. There is no evidence that it has yet one so.

Misleading title but the just of it is correct. Russia and China have more than likely had ample opportunity to arm Iran to the teeth, perhaps with nuclear weapons.

Quote:Iran, Russia and China prepare for War against America
Date: 07 November 2011

President Putin formalised an alliance with Iran against any military action by the West and pledged to complete the controversial Iranian nuclear power plant at Bushehr.

Mr. Putin does not want Russian secret military technology falling into NATO hands, if the U.S. Obama administration strikes Iran, and then pursues an Iraqi-style occupation. China also has developed a military interest in Iran. The result of a U.S led attack against Iran would likely trigger World War III, and an accompanying nuclear war.

Didn't CBC Newsworld or CNN tell you that Iranian military hardware is supplied by the Russian and Chinese led Central Asian Security Alliance that includes Iran?

Russia and Iran have reportedly been holding joint military exercises for years, in preparation for a possible U.S led NATO attack.

Russia-Iran military exercises in the Caspian Sea back in 2009 had involved some 30 vessels. That maneuver, had been dubbed "Regional Collaboration for a Secure and Clean Caspian", combines security and maritime objectives in the Caspian Sea.

Rainbow  Israel, US, UK Nuclear Collusion, ‘Intelligence’ and Blowback
Quote:Israel, US, UK Nuclear Collusion, ‘Intelligence’ and Blowback
by Eileen Fleming

Last week Israel successfully test-fired a new long-range ballistic missile, capable of striking military targets deep inside Iran.

In remarks to Israel’s Knesset, Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “A nuclear Iran will pose a serious threat to the Middle East and the entire world, and it of course poses a direct and heavy threat to us.”

On September 3rd, Gen. Hasan Firouzabadi, supreme commander of Iran’s military and Revolutionary Guards armed forces, said, “Iran hopes there won’t be a need to target the nuclear facility of the Zionist regime, but if there is, Israel would receive dreadful retribution. Our developed weapons can hit any part of the Zionist regime.” [1]
Israeli ambassador in Washington Michael Oren, claims Hezbollah in South Lebanon has 16,000 rockets ranged to cover every part of Israel with enhanced precision and that includes the Dimona WMD facility- which has never allowed International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors into.

The Associated Press reported last Friday that unnamed Diplomats said the UN atomic agency plans to reveal intelligence this week suggesting Iran made computer models of a nuclear warhead and will share with its 35 board members satellite imagery of what the IAEA believes is a large steel container used for nuclear arms-related high explosives tests.

“Israeli President Shimon Peres said Friday that the international community is closer to pursuing a military solution to the standoff over Iran’s nuclear program than a diplomatic one. The comments, from a known dove, assumed added significance because they followed unsubstantiated reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was seeking his government’s support for a strike against Tehran.” [2]

Almost all of the oil output of Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, Iraq and Iran run through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is well equipped with missile boats and land-based missiles. It doesn’t require much intelligence to comprehend that Iran would close off the Strait of Hormuz as soon as the first Israeli plane entered Iranian airspace. The blowback to the world’s economy with the elimination of nearly a fifth of the industrial nations’ supply of oil would lead to the end of the world as we now know it.

What we do know is what Mordechai Vanunu, Israel’s nuclear whistleblower said: “Everyone knows Israel has 200 bombs-hydrogen, nitrogen…No one wants atomic weapons in the Middle East….No one wants Israel or the Middle East to have atomic weapons, because if Israel has the bomb Iran will have the bomb.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J0VfuWyZEE

In 2009, Vanunu wrote:
“I am asking the committee to remove my name from the nominations. I cannot be part of a list of laureates that includes Simon Peres.

“Peres established and developed the atomic weapon program in Dimona in Israel.
“Peres was the man who ordered my kidnapping [and] he continues to oppose my freedom and release.”

We also know about President Shimon Peres’ “secret” offer to sell nuclear warheads to the South African Apartheid regime in 1975 and that PW Botha, South Africa’s defense minister asked Peres [who was then Israel’s defense minister] for nuclear warheads.
Peres offered them “in three sizes” which are understood as conventional, chemical and nuclear weapons.

The two signed a broad-ranging agreement governing military ties between the two countries that included a clause declaring that “the very existence of this agreement” was to remain a secret.

However, while researching for a book on the close relationship between the two regimes, Sasha Polakow-Suransky an American academic unearthed the evidence and published it in “The Unspoken Alliance: Israel’s secret alliance with apartheid South Africa.”
Sasha also documents that Israeli officials “formally offered to sell South Africa some of the nuclear-capable Jericho missiles in its arsenal.”

After a March 1975 meeting attended by South African military chief of staff, Lieutenant General RF Armstrong, wrote a “top secret” memo laying out the benefits to South Africa in obtaining the Jericho missiles if they were fitted with nuclear weapons.
On 4 June 1975, Peres and Botha met in Zurich and by then, the Jericho project had been renamed Chalet.

The top-secret minutes of that meeting recorded that, “Minister Botha expressed interest in a limited number of units of Chalet subject to the correct payload being available…Minister Peres said the correct payload was available in three sizes. Minister Botha expressed his appreciation.” [3]

Botha did not go ahead with the deal because of the cost and the fact that final approval was dependent on Israel’s prime minister.

South Africa did build its own nuclear bombs and also provided much of the yellowcake uranium that Israel required to develop its nuclear arsenal.

The documents also confirm that former South African naval commander, Dieter Gerhardt admitted there was an agreement between Israel and South Africa called Chalet that involved an offer by Israel to arm eight Jericho missiles with “special warheads” understood as atomic bombs.

“Some weeks before Peres made his offer of nuclear warheads to Botha, the two defence ministers signed a covert agreement governing the military alliance known as Secment. It was so secret that it included a denial of its own existence: ‘It is hereby expressly agreed that the very existence of this agreement… shall be secret and shall not be disclosed by either party.’” [Ibid]

No secret that British officials are reportedly working on a plan to assist U.S. forces in a pre-emptive attack on Iranian military facilities:

Quote:Disgruntled Israeli Intelligence Chiefs Try To Stop Attack On Iran
Dagan and Diskin attempt to remove Netanyahu through leak campaign
Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet.com
Thursday, November 3, 2011

The barrage of news concerning preparations for an attack on Iran came as a result of leaks made by disgruntled former Israeli intelligence chiefs who are trying to prevent the attack and remove Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from office, according to reports.

The Kuwaiti al-Jarida newspaper reports today that Netanyahu has ordered Shin Bet chief Yoram Cohen to conduct an urgent investigation into the leaks, fearful that the blaze of publicity surrounding plans for a military assault could derail the agenda to target Iranian nuclear facilities.

“According to the report, former Mossad chief Meir Dagan and former Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin are those responsible for leaking information to the media regarding an attack on Iran,” reports Haaretz.com.

The two former intelligence chiefs are trying to discredit Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak, according to an Israeli source cited by the newspaper, partly as political payback and partly in a bid to halt the military offensive.

Rumors that Israel was preparing for an attack on Iran have been rumbling all summer, but they really came to the fore in early October when US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s October 3 Tel Aviv visit was used as an opportunity by Israeli hawks to convince Panetta to green light the attack. Just ten days later, details emerged of a highly dubious assassination plot in the United States that was blamed on Iran.

It was at this point that Dagan and Diskin acted “to leak the details to the press” concerning the attack preparations in an effort to “effectively foil the operation,” the Israeli source told the newspaper...

...Meanwhile, DebkaFile, the Israeli intelligence outfit which was recently proven reliable again after it accurately predicted the end of the Libya conflict, reports that Israel will step aside and let NATO powers carry out the attack if countries like the U.S., Britain, France, Italy and Germany step up to the plate.

“DEBKAfile’s military sources report that if the US, Britain and other NATO nations, such as France, Italy and Germany, participate in the attack, Israel will not. Its army, air force and navy will defend the home front, be available to engage Iran’s allies to prevent them from striking the assault forces from the rear, and act as a strategic reserve,” states the report.
