Aspartame Scare Just Another Hoax?
Quote:I do not doubt that aspartame causes ill health, (blurred vision, etc) what I do doubt however is that there is sufficient evidence to claim that aspartame causes cancer, it has been extensively studied, more so than most other foods or food additives and the overwhelming evidence suggests that it doesn't cause cancer. The "science" (I use that word loosely) relied upon by the people claiming that it does is either totally and rightfully discredited, outdated and in many cases.. Just plain non existant. The scientific studies that claim that it causes 47 times more likelyhood of brain tumors in rats just don't exist from what I can see.. That means that the information quoted in the pinned thread at the top of this section is based on blatant lies, if someone makes a claim like this in the scientific community they MUST provide references to back up their claims!

where's that soapbx smiley?

A I've now stated 3 times - the investigation into those experiments was funded by the Aspartame industry and VERY TENUOUS to say that the experimental findings were 'disproved'

You seem to be keen on glossing over details to suit your own perspective. That's not impartial, that's agenda driven.

You said "those experiments". So were the studies that I posted funded by the aspartame industry or just the investigation into a study that you posted?

This is the largest most well respected, widely sited study on the cancer risk of aspartame as far as I know.. Was this sponsored by the aspartame industry? If so can I please see the evidence?? http://www.nci.nih.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/risk/aspartame

http://cebp.aacrjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/15/9/1654

(third link doesn't work now)

Anyway, the link I provided claims that the scientific community criticised olney for "Ecological fallacy" and claimed that his work was bogus, the article never questions the validity of Soffritti's methods though (which your link does), in fact it was the reason for the study. Just because you came up with an article that criticises Soffritti doesn't mean shit, isn't that the definition of a straw man argument? Posting and arguing against something that I'm not disputing?? Please focus on the information I have presented, thanks.

I don't know it that's the same study - I looked for the most recent - it's in the thread..

edit)The study you link to is an 'observational study' - that's something very different. My conjecture was concerning the most widely cited 'laboratory study' in the case - the investigation into it was paid by the aspartame industry.

That still stands as fact.

Try and be less belligerent:)

Maybe, maybe not, but once a person is chronically ill from what amounts to a toxic,
other opportunistic diseases can happen.

Quote:If I had to consume a sugar substitute it would be stevia, aspartame worries me but there is a lot of unsubstantiated claims made about it and this is my point, some people just don't understand the meaning of the word "proof".

On the other hand there is an overwhelming amount of solid evidence to suggest that smoking causes cancer, it is not really a topic for debate IMO, there is a BIG difference.

I haven't studied this chemical nor do I intent to. I don't use it therefore it concerns me not. OTOH, if there's evidence indicating people who use a lot of it
have more cancers than sugar only users, it would be suggestive as a trigger at the least.
