A golf course display of the red, white, and blue also will generate some green.

The towering white flagpole erected at Armitage Golf Course in Hampden Twp. over the winter is actually a cell phone tower. Hampden Twp. Manager Michael Gossert said when it is in full use, the structure could generate $1,400 a month in revenue for the township, which owns the golf course.

Flagpoles that double as cell towers -- or, conversely, cell towers that double as flagpoles -- have become an increasingly important part of the nation's cellular communications infrastructure. A flag-bearing cell tower was put up in a Paxtang cemetery two years ago and another one has been proposed near a housing development under construction in Susquehanna Twp.

T-Mobile USA, which proposed the 120-foot structure in Susquehanna Twp., would like to improve service to customers in the area, including motorists using Linglestown Road.

Spokeswoman Kerri Strike, T-Mobile market director for Philadelphia and central Pennsylvania, said flag-bearing towers are a relatively new concept that has gained popularity in the last several years.

"We haven't received any community opposition," Strike said Wednesday morning "We are working very closely with Susquehanna Twp."

In Paxtang, a 100-foot flag-bearing cell tower was erected on the property of the Paxtang Cemetery Association in 2007.

"I don't mind that it's there," said neighbor Veronica Harding, who has lived near the cemetery for eight years. "It's kind of weird that I didn't know it was a cell phone tower."
