(11-10-2013, 11:10 AM)groggin Wrote: lead pipes arent needed, though they can still be found in some older buildings, they're usually drains tho. before ~'90 copper plumbing was slodered by plumbers using usually a 50/50 or 60/40 lead/tin alloy. not much alloy exposed per joint, but there are dozens...

Good point in that every little bit adds up. So an area with a significant number of older structures can result in a higher lead content in water. As these systems deteriorate, the fixtures are replaced, but that can take time.

In any case, lead is a factor that filtration systems should be designed to compensate for. It's by no means the only one, and a little bit of Web research for one's surrounding area is always a good start to an investigation.

my place was built in 1870 however luckily... on unluckily ,however you look at it(it cost me!)... i had the plumbing entirely redone in my flat.
The guys doing it were shocked and stunned that there were full on lead pipes still in service in the place.
Not any more.. however am looking to move to a bigger place nearby of a similar age and I'll be asking when the plumbing was redone...
And probably i'll have that redone as well.
