Fears over mutating swine flu virus that could render vaccine useless
Quote:A research team has hurriedly been re-formed to investigate whether the swine flu virus has started to mutate in a way that will render the vaccine ineffective.

Senior Government scientists have already discovered slight genetic mutations in the H1N1 virus.

They are checking whether this is causing some people to be more severely affected, although there is no evidence at this stage to suggest the changes would stop the vaccine working or prevent the anti-viral drug Tamiflu from being effective.

So far, 45 people are known to have died from swine flu since October.

The team, based at Imperial College London, are testing the DNA samples of hundreds of swine flu victims.

Professor Peter Openshaw, director of the Centre for Respiratory Infection at Imperial, said: ‘We have paid particular attention to whether the mutations are affecting how well the vaccine works and whether the slight mutations have led to it becoming more severe.’

The study, known as MOSAIC, was set up in 2009 to monitor the virus during the pandemic, but it was swiftly re-assembled last month with the latest outbreak.

Asthma specialist nurse Katy Odeadra, who works in the Chest and Allergy Clinic at St Mary’s Hospital, said: ‘All the talk among doctors and nurses dealing with swine flu cases is of a mutated form of the virus.’

The Health Protection Agency said yesterday: ‘The vaccine still works.’

RE: Fears over mutating swine flu virus that could render vaccine useless
I visited my doctor a couple of days ago and she advised me to get the flu shot. I told her I wasn't partial to mercury in the thimerasol, she said "We all take it". This was supposed to impress me I think. I said, the insurance companies won't insure vaccine suppliers and the government won't insure anyone who takes the H1N1 vaccine. Why would I take something that was so ill thought of? That was the end of the vaccine sales pitch.

There is no credible evidence to show that vaccines work and the fact that insurance companies won't insure vaccine manufacturing companies to keep them safe from liabilities that result from vaccine damages ought to raise a monstrous red flag to anyone thinking that a vaccine is the way to go.

RE: Fears over mutating swine flu virus that could render vaccine useless
Hello TriWooOx

All Influenza viruses mutate.

A different strain (mutation) generally arrives along each year.

Interestingly, influenza viruses are normally a waterfowl virus, perhaps picked up from infected streams, and don't really bother the birds very much.

In all historic influenza outbreaks so far, even back to the so-called "Spanish Influenza" outbreak of 1918, the particular virus may be traced back to China, where waterfowl live in very close proximity to pigs and people, in small villages..

The avian virus is normally benign to the ducks, geese, chickens, but passes from time to time across to the pigs, where it mutates, and the pigs in turn pass it onto people.

Spread much faster in these days of worldwide plane travel, that new influenza (mutated) strain can be in your neighbourhood within 12 hours of being passed to a person from a pig.

Interestingly the pigs don't seem to be bothered too much, just have watery eyes and sniffles, the virus is passed on via coughing, sneezing of the pig, or just being near and breathing in what the pig breathes out.

Perhaps in older days, when most people lived closer together in caves, along with their animals, they may have had a natural immunity to the influenza virus.

Note that I'm not talking about viruses altered in laboratories, just the natural occurring ones.

As far as getting a "flu innoculation" i took one years ago, as a requirement of my work where I visited many homes each day, and the immunisation was paid for by my employer.

It was the worst case of 'flu I ever had, taking me more than a week to feel better, and I have resisted ever taking another "influenza immunisation", in spite of those now being free, preferring to trust that if the natural or man-made virus arrives, my immune system shall deal with it in a prompt and efficient manner, as it has been designed..

Kind Regards.
