U.S. Panel Weighs Guidelines for Synthetic Biology
Science 16 July 2010:
Vol. 329. no. 5989, pp. 264 - 265
DOI: 10.1126/science.329.5989.264-b

Bioethics:
U.S. Panel Weighs Guidelines for Synthetic Biology
Jocelyn Kaiser

Last week, the United States began the highest review to date—in the president's bioethics commission—of problems that could come out of the young field of synthetic biology. Some scientists who spoke at the meeting in Washington, D.C., on 8 to 9 July warned that the growing ease of manipulating DNA in living organisms could spawn new pathogens and ramp up the risks of bioterrorism. Close oversight is needed, they said; others worried that new rules could stifle research. The commission will take a "deep dive" into the subject before coming back with advice by the end of this year, said the panel's co-chair.

I don't think you can retreat from the consequences of scientific discovery.
If you believe it for this, then a million years ago, and for the same reasons, you would have had to reject FIRE.
So it is necessary to go forward and discover what there is to be discovered. Any potential enemy will have to search harder and faster than you in order to use this "weapon" to advantage. If he cannot, then he won't use it, for fear of the retribution he might receive.
ALL of knowledge may be used as a weapon if it so becomes necessary.
A mature culture knows all about this, yet chooses otherwise: communication, trade, persuasion, deterrence.
"The growing ease of manipulating DNA in living organisms" is an interesting phrase.
You have to remember that out in the country, in free wild nature, the natural conditions are "manipulating DNA in living organisms" quite naturally, and are doing already what we are planning to do.
Nature itself was the original bio-terrorist. There's nothing new - yet.

I'd like to suggest that "we" shelve this research til "we" fix the million other problems that face the human race. It's obscene that time and money is being spent on this while so many real problems go unresolved.

I hope the commission in question is short in it's deliberations and comes back with a thumbs down for the funding.

One more pandora's box on the pile.

Which means my statement "So it is necessary to go forward and discover what there is to be discovered. Any potential enemy will have to search harder and faster than you in order to use this "weapon" to advantage. If he cannot, then he won't use it, for fear of the retribution he might receive." slipped right past you without any contact.
Does this mean you are happy to wait until the relatives of a million dead Iraqis and Afghans have commissioned the research to produce some neatly-engineered Black Death to confer upon the "supersized" (you), without the knowledge of an antidote?
Tell me why I shouldn't agree with that idea.
The fact is that "Pandora's Box" is HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY.
As Hilly is always saying, the price of freedom IS eternal vigilance. To be responsible and vigilant is TO CONTINUE.
To STOP, as you advocate, is to forswear responsibility.
Save yourself a buck and watch your grandchildren die. Great. Typical, too.
