Big Pharma lies about statin drugs finally exposed in British Medical Journal
Quote:To hear Big Pharma tell it, statin drugs are "miracle" medicines that have prevented millions of heart attacks and strokes. But a recent study published in the British Medical Journal tells a completely different story: For every heart attack prevented by the drug, two or more people suffered liver damage, kidney failure, cataracts or extreme muscle weakness as a result of taking the drug.

Statin drugs, in other words, harm far more people than they help.

Julia Hippisley-Cox and Carol Coupland led the study which examined data from over two million patients, including over 225,000 patients who were new statin drug users.

They found that for every 10,000 women being treated with statins, there were only 271 fewer cases of heart disease.

And yet, at the same time, the statin drugs caused 74 cases of liver damage, 23 cases of acute kidney failure, 39 cases of extreme muscle weakness and 307 cases of cataracts.

Statin drugs, in other words, helped 271 people but harmed 443 people. This demonstrates how they are wreaking havoc with the health of those who take them, causing damage that far outweighs any benefit they might offer.

Big Pharma's highly deceptive advertising implies that statin drugs help everyone who takes them. So if 10,000 people took the drugs, we're promised, heart attacks would be prevented in all 10,000 people. That's the implied message in the drug ads, anyway.

But this is just a wild exaggeration and distortion of the facts. Most drugs don't work on most people, and statin drugs only "work" on about 2.7% of those who take them. Yet they cause serious damage in about 4.4% of those who take them.

So if you take statin drugs, your odds of benefiting from them is less than 3 out of 100. But your odds of being harmed by them are more than 4 out of 100. For 96 out of 100 people, statin drugs do nothing except make the drug companies rich and pollute the waterways every time you flush the toilet.

Statin drugs, then, are basically a crap shoot with your health.

Keep the pharma profits rolling
From the point of view of Big Pharma, they have the added benefit of causing other diseases that often result in yet more drugs or medical procedures being prescribed. Kidney dialysis makes big money for hospitals, by the way. It's a multi-billion-dollar business all by itself. Statin drugs are therefore a way for the sick-care industry to recruit new patients into kidney dialysis, knowing that some percentage of statin drug users are going to end up with full-blown kidney failure.

What's really interesting about all this is how easy it is to fool doctors into prescribing statin drugs. Doctors mistakenly think these are miracle drugs, but they're never read the research. They've been convinced by drug reps, misleading medical journal articles and Big Pharma advertising -- and they bought it!

Mainstream doctors, you see, are perhaps the most gullible people on the planet. They'll gladly prescribe a drug that harms more people than it helps -- by the millions -- because they can be almost effortlessly swayed into pushing poison pills through "science babble" language used by drug companies to promote their pills.

Doctors are literally walking around today thinking statin drugs are such miracle lifesavers that some doctors openly talked about dripping the drug into the public water supply! That's how convinced they are about the drug's benefits. They think everyone should be taking statins whether they need them or not!

It's downright loony. But that's characteristic of western medicine, isn't it? Proclaim your poison to be "miracle medicine" while utterly ignoring the truth that those drugs harm far more people than they help (and they simply don't work on more than 90% of people who take them).

The statin scam
Statin drugs are a scam, plain and simple, and the doctors who prescribe them are puppets used by Big Pharma to sell high-profit drugs to people who for the most part won't even benefit from them. That this research exposing the truth about statin drugs even appeared in the British Medical Journal is a minor miracle all by itself, by the way. But it does indicate that the wall of lies constructed about statins by Big Pharma is starting to crack.

If the truth about statins were openly known, the drugs wouldn't be prescribed to anyone, and drug companies would be sued for billions of dollars for their false advertising and marketing manipulations.

Until that happens, just remember this: Any doctor who recommends a statin drug is a con man drug pusher. If they don't have the honesty to research the truth about these drugs and stop prescribing them, they certainly cannot be trusted with your health. If they're pushing statin drugs on you, they're really just working for Big Pharma, not for you, and they're not interested in real science and the real impacts of drugs on patients.

It brings up another hugely important question in modern medicine: Why don't doctors have the capability to question the false beliefs of their own industry? As you might have guessed, that's the topic of another story altogether.

RE: Big Pharma lies about statin drugs finally exposed in British Medical Journal
If you know anyone who is on statin drugs get them off of it. I read mixed advice about whether to wean off of the poison or to drop it like it's hot.

Quote:Statins work by inhibiting the enzyme methylglutaryl coenzyme A HMG-CoA) reductase. They prevent the production of mevalonate from HMG-CoA. The body converts mevalonate to cholesterol and a variety of other products. One of the things that melvalonate produces is Co Q 10; so these drugs ultimately **prevents the production of Co Q 10. Patients taking these drugs commonly experience exercise intolerance, myalgia and myoglobinuria. Studies show that these drugs have the potential to cause **myopathies and rhabdomyolysis with renal failure. The FDA has warned about liver failure in conjunction with these drugs. These more serious side effects occur in about 1% of the population taking the drugs. • Statins also cause a side effect in particular called, transient global amnesia associated with the use of Lipitor, which is simply forgetting & never remembering chunks of time through out your day. Who is taking STATINS? People usually over 40… Here you can see than it is common for us to complain that our mind is getting weaker as it ages, before you say honestly whether that is true, get off the STATIN drug, stop living in fear, and most importantly start a healthy mind/body routine.

Cholesterol repairs tissue, it's not a cause of heart disease it could present in elevated levels because your body is attempting to heal itself. Your brain is comprised of 50% cholesterol.

Quote:Facts About Cholesterol

1) There is no proof that cholesterol causes cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD includes heart attacks, strokes and blood clots.

2) There is an association in men, age 35 - 55, between high cholesterol and heart attacks if, and only if, their cholesterol is greater than 240. An association however does not mean cholesterol causes the heart attack.

3) There is no association in women, at any age, between high cholesterol and heart attacks.

4) In a Time Magazine (6/3/02) full-page advertisement, the manufacturer of Lipitor, one of the most commonly prescibed cholesterol lowering drugs, issues a disclaimer: "LIPITOR has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks."

5) Heart attacks occur in people with normal and low cholesterol.

6) Plaque happens. Plaque is a fact of life. Plaque is deposits of fats, proteins and minerals in arteries. It is found in mummies and in very young children.

7) If you have too much plaque it means there has been damage to the very delicate lining of very small arteries. Plaque, including cholesterol, repairs the damage. The plaque is scar tissue. The more damage the more scar tissue. The more damage and scar tissue over time the greater the risk of developing a blockage in these very small arteries. Blockages in the arteries that supply oxygen to the heart muscle cause heart attacks. Blockages in the arteries that supply oxygen to the brain cells cause strokes. Blockages in arteries mean the oxygen to heart muscle or brain cells is decreased or shut off. The heart muscle or brain tissue is damaged, either temporarily or permanently.

8) Small arteries are damaged by free radicals. They are also damaged by damaged cholesterol. Cholesterol is damaged by free radicals.

9) Some free radicals are normal. They are necessary for cells to "breathe", i.e., use oxygen. These normal and necessary reactions take palce inside the cells in VERY secure compartments. However, excess free radicals do damage - to arteries, to cholesterol and to many other tissues in the body. Excess free radicals are generated by: 1) toxic heavy metals, most commonly mercury, lead and arsenic; 2) chemicals; 3) radiation; 4) high levels of homocysteine and lipoprotein (a), both genetically determined; and 5) trans fatty acids, aka hydrogenated oils and margarine.

10) Trans fatty acids were introduced as a "food" in the early 1930's. Hydrogen is added to these oils in the laboratory. This process changes the shape of the fatty acid. A hydrogenated fatty acid cannot be used in the body and must be eliminated. Trans or hydrogenated fatty acids never decompose. Their long shelf life is an advantage to the food industry. However, they are not a food if they do not decompose. When you make a graph of the increase in margarine consumption between the early 1930's and 1970's, it is the same graph as the rise in the number of heart attacks in the same time period. Moreover, trans or hydrogenated fatty acids damage cholesterol. Damaged cholesterol damages arteries.

11) Excess animal (saturated) fats and excess sweets and carbohydrates increase cholesterol. Too litte animal fat decreases cholesterol too much. Eggs do not raise cholesterol. Eggs do not damage cholesterol and arteries and do not generate free radicals or plaque.

12) Several articles have appeared in major medical journals in the last 10+ years documenting an association between low cholesterol and increased mortality from all causes. Not one article explained the mechanism whereby low cholesterol increases mortality from all diseases. Low cholesterol increases mortality from all causes because cholesterol regulates free radical production. If your tissue cholesterol is too low you will have excess free radicals. Free radicals damage small arteries that supply oxygen to the heart muscle AND damage every other tissue, gland and organ in the body. Your terminal illness depends on which tissue, gland, organ or system gets hit hardest. See "Rethinking Cholesterol" in the Articles section at http://www.HealthEquations.com.

CONCLUSION: Consider either a high or low cholesterol, and either a high or low LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio, as a warning light on your dash. A warning light on your dash tells you something is wrong, somewhere. The warning light does not tell you what is wrong, nor does it tell you what will happen and when. You can always pull the fuse (i.e., take cholesterol lowering drugs) and the light will go out. Alternatively you can find out what is wrong and fix it before anything bad happens. This is the job of warning lights after all.

Old people, once a repository of wisdom, are now largely treated as a liability due to 'senile geezer' mentality. We can reclaim a lost resource in our elders by being vigilant circulating this crucial information. I'm posting this at the legion, the elder care bulletin, talking to some local doctors and informing med students at the university when I'm in the neighbourhood. Knowledge is power.

Quote:Cholesterol-Reducing Drugs May Lessen Brain Function, Says Researcher
ScienceDaily (Feb. 26, 2009) — Research by an Iowa State University scientist suggests that cholesterol-reducing drugs known as statins may lessen brain function.

Yeon-Kyun Shin, a biophysics professor in the department of biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology, says the results of his study show that drugs that inhibit the liver from making cholesterol may also keep the brain from making cholesterol, which is vital to efficient brain function.

"If you deprive cholesterol from the brain, then you directly affect the machinery that triggers the release of neurotransmitters," said Shin. "Neurotransmitters affect the data-processing and memory functions. In other words -- how smart you are and how well you remember things."

Shin's findings will be published in this month's edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cholesterol is one of the building blocks of cells and is made in the liver. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) -- often referred to as bad cholesterol -- is cholesterol in the bloodstream from the liver on the way to cells in the body. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) -- so-called good cholesterol -- is cholesterol being removed from cells. Too much LDL going to cells and not enough being removed can lead to cholesterol deposits and hardening of the cells.

"If you have too much cholesterol, your internal machinery is not going to be able to take away enough cholesterol from the cells," said Shin. "Then cells harden and you can get these deposits."

Cholesterol-reducing statin drugs are helpful because they keep the liver from synthesizing cholesterol so less of the substance is carried to the cells. This lowers LDL cholesterol.

It is the function of reducing the synthesis of cholesterol that Shin's study shows may also harm brain function.

"If you try to lower the cholesterol by taking medicine that is attacking the machinery of cholesterol synthesis in the liver, that medicine goes to the brain too. And then it reduces the synthesis of cholesterol which is necessary in the brain," said Shin.

In his experiments, Shin tested the activity of the neurotransmitter-release machinery from brain cells without cholesterol present and measured how well the machinery functioned. He then included cholesterol in the system and again measured the protein function. Cholesterol increased protein function by five times.

"Our study shows there is a direct link between cholesterol and the neurotransmitter release," said Shin. "And we know exactly the molecular mechanics of what happens in the cells. Cholesterol changes the shape of the protein to stimulate thinking and memory."

While reducing the cholesterol in the brain may make you have less memory and cognitive skills, more cholesterol in the blood does not make people smarter. Because cholesterol in the blood cannot get across the blood brain barrier, there is no connection to the amount of cholesterol a person eats and brain function.

Shin says that for many people taking cholesterol-lower statins can be very healthful and they should listen to their doctor when taking medication.

Conclusion: statins are designed for profit, to kill us off and make us more dumberer.
