RE: Book of Eli (Recent Movie)
I thought it was an ok movie...nothing spectacular, but a bit different.
I do like how they showed the bad guy wanting the Bible really bad so that he could just use it to gain more power, influence and control over more people. Kind of true of the way the priest class is in any religion is these days.
I think the looking at the hands bit was to see if people were shaky.
If you remember the part where Eli and the girl were inside the home of the elderly couple, she asked Eli if he saw the old lady's hands were shaking and Eli said, "It's from eating too much human meat."
I guess according to the script, cannibals have the shakes and that was a way of identifying if you were a cannibal or not.

I did actually want to see The Road...but never got a chance to. The book was pretty good though, thats why I wanted to check it out.

thanks for solving the why of that hand thing in the film, for me.

I also really rated the Mcarthy novel - I don't remember the hand shakes thing in it but it might have been there ..the film adaptation is not that far off, pretty faithful to the book..

I checked out the road and would have to agree it was a better story, not as action packed but way more believable, and the twist is not that extreme as the main actor being a blind ninja warrior.

I think for any who like the good vs evil plot line of these kind of movies the Stand still takes the cake. but the road is after some devastating natural disaster so it makes rebuilding very hard if groups of nomadic folks r a constant threat and you were not prepared for it.

Wish they had done more story line with the old man Eli as he says he knew it was coming regardless of all the sheeple telling him different. obviously he must have been somewhat prepped to stay alive as an elder in such a world.

any other post apocalyptic movies any here have seen and liked?

if you want more detail, you can dl the audiobook here:
http://btjunkie.org/torrent/The-Road-by-Cormac-McCarthy/4358755a4375257ee50f9b5490c3a5f0bb596d61dd7a

I haven't read it yet, and the audiobook was all I could find torrent-wise, so I don't know if there's more about the eli character, but it's definitely worth a shot.

As far as the stand goes - I read the book before that mini-series even came out, and I watched a bit of it, but in comparison to the book it was horrid, and I couldn't get more than a few minutes in. The dolt from coach was awful, and they fused characters which just irks me to no end.

I didn't care much for The Road either. I don't remember The Stand.

The only other ones that come to mind are 21 Days, 2012, and I am Legend. i liked 2012 but it wasn't quite what I expected. 21 Day and it's sequel were ok.

just finished watching "right at your door," what a fucked up film... well done, but fucked up.

I also finished listening to the the audiobook of "The Road." It really did deserve the Pulitzer Prize that it received. Same author as "No Country For Old Men" - Cormac McCarthy.

"I Am Legend" was a much better book than it was in film version with will smith. "The Omega Man" was a much better adaptation.

you must be a younger guy the stand was an epic film with like 20 big stars when they were not as big and some twilight stars (end of career) it's based on a Steven King book, and was on like 4 or 5 vhs tapes when it came out, now 2 dvd's

(note since the end of the gunslinger serries and the rip off ending i now boycott and slander Steve every chance i normally get so please don't feel i'm plugging the hack!!!!)

i am legend is OK.... 4/10

21 days... i thought it was 28 days the one that takes place in britian right?... it was Ok and plausible but not totally apocalyptic as they some how do get to quarantine it on the British island. 5/10

of course theres the costner era when he got wind he made a few. Water world is shit 2/10. Postman was much better with a realistic story line and explanation say 6/10... humm can't think of any others my wake n' bake is kicking Blushin...

any other end of (this cycle) time movies to recommend here?

In "28 weeks later" the sequel to "28/29 days later" (depending on whether the Uk or US release) the virus actually breaches the quarantine and begins to infect the continental european populations, so it does become apocalyptic just in time for a third film.

I have "right at your door" on disk ready to watch. it's a twisted film, you say, h3rm3s?

Might as well chuck in Children of Men and Code 46 into the brew too if it's the season for a movies thread.

.."The Hurt Locker" was good, I thought.

not twisted, but just... well I guess you'll find out.
I liked children of men.

Land of the Blind is really good (if you can find it,) not exactly apocalyptic, but definitely dystopian.
