Review: Supposed Marijuana And Schizophrenia Link "Overstated"
Quote:Review: Supposed Marijuana And Schizophrenia Link "Overstated"

Bristol, United Kingdom:
Clinical evidence indicating that marijuana use may be casually linked to incidences of schizophrenia or other psychological harms is not compelling, according to a scientific review published online by the journal Addiction.

Investigators at the University of Bristol, Department of Social Medicine assessed the potential health risks of cannabis, particularly whether use of the drug may be causally linked with mental illness.

Authors wrote: "We continue to take the view that the evidence that cannabis use causes schizophrenia is neither very new, nor by normal criteria, particularly compelling. ... For example, our recent modeling suggests that we would need to prevent between 3000 and 5000 cases of heavy cannabis use among young men and women to prevent one case of schizophrenia, and that four or five times more young people would need to avoid light cannabis use to prevent a single schizophrenia case. ... We conclude that the strongest evidence of a possible causal relation between cannabis use and schizophrenia emerged more than 20 years ago and that the strength of more recent evidence may have been overstated."

In 2007, an analysis in the British medical journal The Lancet estimated that experimenting with marijuana could increase one's risk of developing a psychotic illness later in life by some 40 percent. Following this report, Parliament in 2008 voted to reclassify marijuana as a Class B substance, making its possession punishable by up to five years in prison.

University of Bristol researchers also criticized Parliament's reclassification of the drug, which took effect earlier this year. They concluded: "The only important possible benefit of prohibition is prevention of cannabis use. There is little or no evidence that it effectively achieves this benefit. Patterns of cannabis use in the population appear to be independent of the policy surrounding use, and criminalizing individual cannabis users does not appear to modify their use in a healthy way."

Overall, investigators determined that marijuana's most significant health risk was its association and reinforcement with tobacco smoking.

it seems the researchers and drug war advocates are more dissociated with reality than the majority of users...

That is definitely the case.
To paraphrase Terrence McKenna, psychedelics are substances that are known to cause paranoia in those that don't take them. Big Grin

It is like religion, pleople are getting smart and realize that religion is what causes hatred and war and they are getting sick of it.
Two or tree different churches (sometimes religions) come togther and share the same building because each one can't afford to keep a church open because they don't have enough sheeple in the flock to keep it open.
They don't like to advertise that no one comes to church anymore instead they try to pump it up and tell you more and more people are starting to go to church all the time which is a lie.
They pump it up because they know they are loosing thier controll over the people and it is just the same with the marijuana issues, the man knows the people are getting smarter and know the facts better now.
So they try to tighten the grip the more they lose the battle which they know they will never win and so they come up with false studies so they can tighten the laws around it even more because they know they are lossing the battle.
Same thing with bill c15 in Canada, they know people are tired of tax payers money on a drug they now know is not as the american man wants you to believe.
So they come up with laws that take our rights away that allow us to fight the law in the first place, sounds like something hitler and suddam would have come up with and used against it't people.
Education is the key more and more people wake up to the fact it is a very good drug that god gave us to use so they must try to fight it as hard as they can and that's why you will see plent of boggus studies like that one.
People who fight to ban marijuana are nothing but hate mongers.

Quote:NORML Responds To Latest Warnings Regarding Marijuana Use And Schizophrenia

Washington, DC:
The findings of a study published earlier this week in the Archives of General Psychiatry alleging that smoking marijuana can 'double' one's risk of psychosis or schizophrenia are in conflict with those previous reviews and ought to be interpreted with caution, says NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano.

"Despite claims that marijuana use may play a causal role in diagnosed incidences of schizophrenia, there exists no empirical evidence anywhere on Earth indicating that populations which have experienced rising rates of cannabis use have also experienced a parallel increase in rates of mental illness," Armentano said.

Most recently, a 2009 systematic review published in the scientific journal Schizophrenia Research compared trends in marijuana use and incidences of schizophrenia in the United Kingdom from 1996 to 2005. Researchers reported that the "incidence and prevalence of schizophrenia and psychoses were either stable or declining" during this period, even the use of cannabis among the general population was rising.

Armentano said that a non-causal association likely exists between marijuana use and psychosis because the symptoms of mental illness often strike early in life — at a time when young people are likely to be already experimenting with cannabis. He also speculated that some people diagnosed with psychotic disorders might be turning to cannabis after the onset of symptoms as a form of self-medication.

Ultimately, however, Armentano said that even if the latest concerns about the potential adverse effect of marijuana use are to be taken at face value, then such findings support a policy of cannabis legalization and regulation – not criminal prohibition.

"Health risks connected with pot use — when scientifically documented — should not be seen as legitimate reasons for criminal prohibition, but instead, as reasons for the plant's legal regulation." he said. "For example, we as a society don't regulate the production, use, and sale of alcohol because it is innocuous, but rather because we acknowledge that its consumption, in some situations, may pose a risk of harm. Placed in this context, today's latest warnings do little to advance the government's position in favor of tightening prohibition, and provide ample ammunition to wage for its repeal."
