Cognitive dissonance
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Cognitive dissonance is the perception of incompatibility between two cognitions, which can be defined as any element of knowledge, including attitude, emotion, belief, or behavior. The theory of cognitive dissonance holds that contradicting cognitions serve as a driving force that compels the mind to acquire or invent new thoughts or beliefs, or to modify existing beliefs, so as to reduce the amount of dissonance (conflict) between cognitions. Experiments have attempted to quantify this hypothetical drive.

The theory of cognitive dissonance was first proposed by the psychologist Leon Festinger in 1956 after observing the counterintuitive belief persistence of members of a UFO doomsday cult and their increased proselytization after the leader's prophecy failed. The failed message of earth's destruction, sent by aliens to a suburban housewife in 1956, became a disconfirmed expectancy that increased dissonance between cognitions, thereby causing most members of the impromptu cult to lessen the dissonance by accepting a new prophecy; that the aliens had instead spared the planet for their sake.[1]

Well, I understood that,

Each of the contradicting perceptions (in one's mind)
'will try to survive'.
By that it means that there is war between contradicting thoughts,
and the man eventually needs to choose the perception he is most identified with.

is that right ?

So, what are you saying ?
that people choose not to change their point of view because it is hard and unpleasant ?

It explains how when people when confronted with facts, will in turn make something up that isn’t fact in order to explain the conflict between the two cognitions.
For example, in a forum I was in I posted pictures of WTC steel that had been sheared off at 45 degree angle with melted steel hardened around the cutting point. his explanation was that since most of the pillars were at a 45 degree angle, that they must have been manufactured that way, and the melted steel was actually melted foam insulation.
Do you see what I am getting at here?
I think that the way people are programmed is more of a mental illness rather than anything else. that would explain why they cant reason with facts. i think we need to start attacking this like a mental illness instead of what we have been doing, posting facts and nothing else. I just haven’t figured out what needs to be done to address the mental thing yet. it would be kick ass to have some kind of audio harmonic mp3 file you could post, and they would just snap out of it, and go kick george and blair in the ass.

Basically, they edit their reality to fit what they believe it to be, rather than accept information that changes it and adapt accordingly.

Interesting article Woken Sheep.

I can recall a good example of this during an interview I once heard. Richard Dawkins (biologist, atheist & anti-theist) was being questioned about some new TV series of his.

(For anyone who is unfamiliar with Dawkins' views - one major opinion he holds is that religious people believe what they believe because they are uninformed, ignorant and irrational. Intelligent people simply don't 'fall' for such silly fairy tales.)

So the interviewer presented the case of an intelligent, well respected scientist who also happened to be a devout Christian. This piece of evidence caused dissonance between two of Dawkins' cognitions. He didn't deny that the man was an intelligent person; so his only option was to re-interpret the man's religious status. Dawkins then basically replied that the man couldn't be a real Christian but instead, merely held some leaning towards religious thought.

I don't think this disability is unique to atheists or 9/11 deniars though. From my experience, it appears to be common in all types of people. Christianity is particularly rife with it. For example, I've met many Evangelicals who claim to use the Bible as the sole foundation of their knowledge. Yet when questioned about the opening verses in Genesis 6, they refuse to accept its clear message. Sometimes they'll 're-interpret' the meaning of the text, and othertimes they'll insert new information entirely. Strange indeed.

IMO, its largely a matter for the individual. If people don't want to accept logical conclusions derived from blatant facts, then there is little we can do to help them. But if I could offer help, it would go something like this....

Firstly, being able to spot cognitive dissonance (& this type of thing) is a major factor for anybody who is keen on overcoming it. I think that everyone is susceptible to it to some degree; so we need to be able to spot it in ourselves as well as others.

Secondly, people need to make a conscious effort to put truth and facts before pride and desire. They may really want their beliefs to be true, but if new evidence falsifies it, they need to have the courage to reject what they want to be true and go with what is true. Emotional detatchment is key.

If you believe what cathy obrien and march phillips say, about the cia programming the mind with harmonics and also curing mental illness in prison subjects. wouldnt you be able to create a sound that would just wake everyone up, like all the sudden they can see clearly. sort of like the affect of mushrooms or lsd on the mind.
Think about it you could have an mp3 file that could make people use their brains on contact. That would have endless potential.
people all over the world would be sitting at their computers
"oh a free porno link, i think ill click it"
EEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRREEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrRRR
and viola they can see the lies! that would be B)
I wonder if anyone is working on anything like that? besides tptb.

hehe. Doesn't seem as effective when its written down :)

It'd be interesting to know the rough idea behind the method. Did Cathy & Marc discuss it at their recent event? (I've not DL'd it yet)

I haven’t even watched that one yet. But they’ve said it in prior events, like mind control out of control on the tracker. Cathy and mark say Cathy’s daughter is still in US custody under NATIONAL SECURITY. They say she’s been programmed under the new stuff, through harmonics. They said they can access the primitive parts of the brain, like blinking and breathing this way. And they can also have a pre program installed that shuts those things down when an unauthorized attempt at deprogramming happens.

Everyone has cognitive dissonance. Most don't realize they do. My goal is to have a mentality that if someone tells me something that's completely contradictory to my beliefs I can just say "FINE", investigate it and change my beliefs if there is need to. It's called searching for the truth:)

"For more than a century, ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as 'internationalists' and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure - one world, if you will. If that is the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it." - A memorable quote from David Rockefeller's Memoirs (2002).

I showed my dad this quote, he went into DENIAL as usual and tryed to say that Mr Rockefeller wasnt accepting the charge of "working against the americans interests" but rather, was accepting the charge of trying to create a more integrated political system.

I tell ya, sometimes I feel like whacking him in the face.

People will continue to deny the facts when there right in front of their face. Cognitive Dissonance indeed.

Now were even being labeled "crazy" and even "Schizophrenic" by establishment psychologists like Kathy McGowan. Send her an e mail and challenge her on her stupidity!!!

Do you see what I am getting at here?

I see exactly what you're getting at Sheepster. Most people have a tendency to stick to their literally fantastic and traditional world-view whether they be sickly or not. Heaven forbids but my own mother and sister sadly belong to such ilk, they simply 'don't wanna know what really goes on in the world...'. (it's too painful and upsetting for them). Tradition is usually king over reason because those who cherish the former experience feelings of stability, security and energy preservation (as a shameful dutch saying goes 'rather lazy than tired'). In sharp contrast reason requires a lot from its adherents. Their minds should be calculating, critical, observant, plastic, energetic and last but not least capable of independent thinking. Furthermore, being reasonable can be rather emotionally demanding as it requires the ability to be insecure, upset, brave and honest. If society is to see progress then traditional norms, values and interpretations should be constantly challenged by reason and logic.

And to admit that the world is run by insane and out-of-control beings displaying collosal delusions of grandeur is so out of sync with the rosy blue-pill world-view that is presented to us by TV and the schooling system, requires a thorough revision of traditional interpretations of society and the world. A lot of people would have difficulty doing so, to say the least and prefer to stay living in denial and are happy to continue watching FIX news instead.

Cognitive dissonance to me seems nothing more than a rationalizing mechanism which provides its carrier with an excuse to not to have to modify world-views (preserve energy), roll over and ease off to sleep again. People have so much on their minds nowadays that maximum stress levels have been reached (by design from above?) and cannot afford to have to alter world-views on top of all personal misery and problems. Hi mom, how ya doin...

So, indeed, cognitive dissonance constitutes a serious counter-force to the truth movement. Even more so if this mechanism has serious subconscious underpinnings. That is, if people are so short-sighted and stubborn that they dismiss confrontations with facts or truth out of hand without looking or thinking. This should not dissuade us from our efforts of persuasion however and if any should inspire us to try harder to confront the sheeple. Repetition works for propaganda and it should work for the truth movement just the same (it presses the same psychological buttons). Shove it in their faces again and again...

Fortunately, truth movements are gaining momentum world wide and I see more and more people waking up to the doom and gloom of the world. If progressive this trend should continue to narrow down the intellectual and perceptual gap between the sheeple and the woken sheeple.

This thread reminded me of this quote:

The heart has reasons that reason does not understand.
~ Jacques Benigne Bossuel

I do agree w/ that one of the main problems we face is cognitive dissonance. I also believe that some hearts do indeed have reasons which reason doesn't understand, can't understand and won't understand. Call it fate, call it life lessons, call it karma, call it bullheadedness, whatever it is, it keeps people where they are, going thru the same things over and over till they get it. or maybe they never do.
